I assume they make these to appeal to kids with some play features (vehicles, exploding walls, etc), but make awesomely detailed figures to appeal to the adults as well. I love building, but I don't build any of these sets. I just buy them for the figures and TLG understands this... Although I hate bricklinking/ebaying figures unless they are ridiculously cheap. Usually if you want multiple figures you can get the whole set for about the same price as all of the figures individually and I'd much rather get the pieces AND give my money to TLG instead of an aftermarket seller.

Interesting idea. I've been building trees like that for my miniature castle scenes. It is neat to see them in an official set too.

I would seriously doubt there would be anything to scale. The children (and us) will use our imaginations. The ninjago dragons were actually pretty good sized, even though Smaug would greatly over size them. I could see them doing a Smaug, just not as big as everyone is thinking. But maybe I will be wrong.

I'll probably go see the movie in the next few weeks, but ultimately I want more cool figures and useful pieces, so if the sets aren't going to the source material it usually doesn't bother me unless they skip out on cool figures and useful pieces. Overall I've been happy with the new line up from that standpoint. I have very little actual sets built, so I will use the pieces for something else entirely anyway. I'd assume they will give us a Beorn bear version next year. But only or imaginations will help us there.

I think it is the built in play feature that comes with vehicles. Kids probably love a combination of vehicles and places, but vehicles are just easier to build a set around, especially for the price points they are going for. Plus, the License holder would also have a say in what type of set they want produced, so I'm sure LEGO isn't at fault here. Some of the vehicles aren't too bad, but I don't have any use for them so I never build them. I mainly buy these sets for the figures, so I guess the background brick is just icing.

Very well done. I like the details of everything. You have created a nice scene here. I like the stone work around the base. And I love the balcony off the side. The bedrooms look cozy enough. That master bed is quite large though!! Keep up the great work!

Well, when you are like me and always one Modular/exclusive behind, waiting isn't that big of a deal. Thankfully the expensive exclusives take a while before they are retired, so I'm not as urgent with them. Most of the regular sets, I try to get right away just in case. But it would be neat to have this built right away. I much prefer this to the Cinema, but I want to get them all so I might as well get them in order to avoid risking missing out on one.

Another huge Rivendell MOC (theonering)
TheLegoDr replied to SheepEater's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
A friend helped set this up at BrickCon in October, so that was neat hearing their point of view. There is also an interview on www.brothers-brick.com, which this friend is a writer for, but he didn't do the interview. The size alone is impressive. I haven't watched the movie in a while, but I don't love the roof patterns. They might be incredibly detailed and realistic compared to the source material, but for some reason I don't like it. But the rest is great. I like seeing the water being so simple. The interview said his kids did most of the water (he did the horses), but it works as simple as it is. I've been trying to come up with a good water look for my castle builds. -
Your building style always astounds me. I love the use of color and pieces used. That window with the 1x2 trans clear plates is just I can only hope other people in my LUG will want lots of these colors for our LUGbulk order! Keep up the great work!

The only sets I have together are sets that I haven't sorted out yet into my general population OR they are already together on display. I tend to not keep the set pieces together because most sets I buy are ONLY for the figures and the pieces are bonus. So I have no need to keep a lot together.
-
For the above, if you want a lot of one brick, it would be best to buy the bulk boxes in the back before they part it out for the PAB wall. You can buy those for $70 (if they have any available period, let alone one in the brick/color you want). But I have some friends who have done it, but I've never personally done it. But you can acquire a large amount of bricks in those boxes.

During by color doesn't work for a lot of people, but it works for me. If I know I need a certain piece in a certain color I go straight to that spot. Plus if I can't find the pieces I need sometimes I may find another piece that can work OR I find other pieces I wasn't looking for, but can find a use for them. So I try not to stay too specific, but there are separate areas for pieces that I would need right away or if I have a lot of that one piece to avoid looking through multiple of one color just to find the other color I need. My lego display is relegated to our large family room in the basement and our guest room. My wife didn't want it taking over the house either, so she basically picked the sets that could be displayed in the guest room. We then have books and other decór in there. But I agree too much on display takes away from the social stuff that you truly want out. I have a lot of sets built that are sitting in shelves in the basement, but I don't care to display them so I should just take them apart. I just happen to have a lot of shelves up.

Looking at that earlier post, I commented on that too. It does make one wonder what it would cost. I've been adding sets/pieces to my bricklink store to see real-time value of pieces and figures that I own and most sets cost about double in the aftermarket than buying them brand new, that is if you source every piece from the after market without adding in shipping. Some of that value is the minifigure of course, but straight bricks do add up quicker than expected.

Tolkien - I'd recommend mirkwood elf army. It is a little more expensive, but you get more figures and cooler ones at that. Plus, I love elf ears. Freddy Bricker - I'd go with Jabba's Palace. But I'm not into Ninjago. The end build is pretty neat for a display piece, but at the same time I probably won't keep it together for too long. Lancethecat - I think the Gunship is a better deal -- more figures, more pieces, same price. The Sail Barge is actually pretty decent, but not at msrp. I found mine at tru for 40% off, so it was worth it at that price. At full retail, I'd prefer the gunship.

According to brickset, I have >120,000 pieces and I know my sorted allotment doesn't take up that much space. I wouldn't be able to guess the cubic feet area though. I have everything sorted by color, then a few smaller containers with pieces that I would tend to use more that would get lost with the larger pieces. And then I have a few boxes of random bricks that need to get sorted sometime. Do you have yours sorted into too many categories maybe? Extra detail will add a lot of extra room being used.
-
This is beautiful. When I saw it on brickset a while ago I immediately supported it. I would definitely like to have something like this, but I don't see it getting made because of size and cost. But I still want one! I love the mansion details and the way the native is incorporated into it. I have considered creating my own like this but with my own touch. I think I will do the haunted house style instead of the quarter opening style. Best of luck!

The funny thing is, even with all of the characters still needed, DC still puts in different versions of the same. We will have two penguin and two riddler figures if that says anything. I understand the need for the main protagonist, but so many extras in the same costume does get old. I personally want more Batman villains AND more other DC characters and their villains. We will see how long it takes for that to happen.

4 females? I assume you are talking about super heroes, but we have more than 4 total. Black widow, Jean gray/dark Phoenix, spider woman, faora, wonder woman, Harley Quinn, catwoman, poison ivy, lois lane, pepper Potts, and then batgirl and Mary Jane this next wave. That's a lot of Germany's to me, but I agree I'd want a lot more too.

LEGO Historian - thanks for sharing. I've picked up bits and pieces from your posts, but never as complete as this. Very interesting. There are times I feel embarrassed about LEGO, but most people that know seem to be interested, even if they aren't fans themselves. I think confidence is key here. I consider hiding anytime someone comes to me about LEGO, but then I own it and all is well. If they don't like it, then I guess that is their problem. I read something recently "what other people think of me is none of my business."

Thanks for posting. I really don't want to buy anything in January, but I want that Batman poster at the end of the month!

Nicely done. I really like that oval lion shield. There were prototypes of that a long time ago, but they never made production. That white Dragon knight helmet is cool, but I don't think it fits with the rest of the figure. I picture white more with a gray instead of the abrupt shift to black. Keep up the good work!

If I may ask, which pizza place was purchased? I went to Chicago for a completely different reason and we got Lou Malnati's pizza. I've never been to BW, but I hope to go soon! Have fun if you make it out there.

I haven't read the books, so the Witch king may just be an ordinary Nazgul, but I think people mostly want his helmet. So they would release another normal looking Nazgul with a new helmet, people would eat that up. Not to mention, people want more Nazgul anyway since they only got the two originally. Not that it would be wise to army build the Witch King necessarily, it would depend on the set price. I'd say must haves would be Faramir, Eowyn, and a Gondor Soldier. There is always the chance we'd get a Galadriel in Hobbit sets, although who knows there. More elves in general, especially female elves are welcome by me. I think we definitely need at least ONE Gondor soldier of some kind with the helmet/shield to help feel more complete. I took my most recent Snape and put Thorin's hair on it and it actually kind of resembles Denethor enough that I may keep it that way. But some figures there is no way to purist customize one. If they release another wave, they should go out with a bang. Granted, I'm sure it would be a subdued wave again. At least pull an Amidala and throw in a key figure into a set that they don't belong. As long as we get the figures, it wouldn't matter to me. And I don't think I'd say this last wave was ROTK oriented. To me, Rivendell went to FOTR, Orthanc and Wizard Battle went to TT, and then Black Gate and Pirate Ship were ROTK. It was pretty spread out..but I'd love more anything. This is my favorite theme.

Great MOC! Very smart use of pieces here. I think this is the best speed line out of the three, but they definitely have improved with each go. Great figure placement, that is key to a successful MOC and you seem to have that nailed. Keep up the great work.

Did no one noticed they put the wrong name by the electro set and the doc ock set? They flipped them around. Not that it matters to us, but to the lesser known people it might confuse them. As far add the figures, I'm torn. I haven't paid much attention to marvel outside of x-men and most recently the avenger movie, so I don't know much about what I'm looking at. I don't have the 'gotta have them all' vibe I had originally. I even have the usm doc ock and he was ugly, although his face can work for a neat custom figure. Anyway, I don't even know who modok is, so I don't car about how he turned out. I actually kind of like that Thor personally. The new hulk is upsetting since I bought an extra of the old one for my daughter. I could have just given her this one. Hydra goon f does nothing for me. So I mostly just want electro, classic doc ock, thor and maybe red skull...whereas I will probably pick up all of the dc sets because I need more Batman rogues but I'd love more variety there too.
