[MOC] BMW X3
Gray Gear replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I do not like SUV's, but the model is quite close to its real counterpart. The land rover wheels are the perfect choice for this scale. I like the use of these windshield pices as headlights, I thought about that too but didn't get the chance on any of my MOCs yet. There are some gaps in the bodywork over the rear wheel, but sometimes its hard or impossible to leave a gap somewhere, i know. I'd like to see a bellyshot and some insight of the drivetrain as well. Of course a Video would be appreachited as well. -
42116 Skid Steer Loader

How convenient. But good choice imo, and the set seems fun. I had its older brother, LEGO 8418 as a kid, and it was a great little set. 8418 looks a lot better and cuter than this one tbh, but kids will still enjoy it. But that B-Model is about the most ugly thing in existance. Hell no the hood isn't even symetric and the light is only on one side. Its just barely recognizable as a car. I know the part limitations for B-models in this small scale are a challenge, but this looks like something built by a 6yo in 20 mins -
Very nice build, and instantly recognizable. The bodywork flows very well, and I like the headlights. Imo you should consider swapping out all those blue and red pins for black ones, they are very visible in this model. As the self-proclaimed "Rotary-Meister"(Initial D reference rigth there) of the LEGO world I have to do my job properly : This is not how the rotary engine works. The crankshaft spins a lot faster than the rotors, but in the same direction. Like this: I faced the same problem when I built my RX-7, and this is what I came up with. I am not saying that my design is perfect, but does work like the real thing: I am not trying to badmouth your design, but stuff like this is triggering me Anyways, thanks for sharing this awesome creation

I always thought as long as there is no brick connection that LEGO would not use the whole build stays "legal". But appearently there are people (like you?) who also want the whole assembly to be the same as in a LEGO set? Where does that mindset stop? Am I even allowed to build anything that is not an official LEGO set? Is making a MOC in itself even legal? Thats not for me, to me this just seams like a creativity stopper. I myself could not care less, I just dont like to stress or bend pieces. Anything else is fine. But to each their own I guess.

Microphone no for sure, lipstick idk. But I feel like it would be too high. I have never had a problem with the clip pieces, they work well in my Honda NSX, Mazda RX-7 and Nissan GTR MOC. Never had any problems with them going out of place or falling off etc. You just have to brace the top to keep them in place.

Than you! Yes, I have 3 90s JDM cars in1:8 cars sitting on one shelf right now. This will be number 4 Of course it will not be able to drift by itself, as you said correctly it will be a manual model. But I will introduce drift inspired suspension and styling to the model. And maybe and engine swap? Idk yet.

Hi there everybody, since some of you asked for more WIP topics in the "Decreasing number of MOCs" topic, I thought I would take you along with my latest project, hopefully from start to finish. I wanted to build a drift car, and what other car ycould that be than the Nissan Silvia? deciding between S13, S14 and S15 was pretty easy, since pop up headlights are awesome. So I went for the most suitable model, the 180SX Type X. A quick search on google brought up this Blueprint. Not perfect, but good enough. Since this is a car with the classic FR layout I took the 6-speed manual transmission from my Nissan R32 GTR MOC and removed the AWD. I'ts running very smooth. After the pop-up headlights were completed I started modelling the front bumper. This bumper is really difficult, all the proportions are hard to recreate from bricks. I tried it like this, and while it is pretty accurate these stacked plates dont look very nice. Often it is better to choose the less accurate but better looking solution, so that's what I'll try next. I would love if someone could suggest a solution for the front lip that wraps all around the bottom of the bumper. It is 1.7 studs high and the angle does not want to match any solution I come up with. I know this does not look like much, but thats what happens when you look at the early stages of a MOC. I hope you enjoyed this, I'll try to keep you updated on my progress. Gray Gear

Very nice model, and definatelly a very good shot for your first MOC! While I do think the Senna is very ugly, I can still appreachiate the model. I like the working gearbox that is fully visible from below, that is always cool to watch. But I would have liked some paddleshifters better than that weird turning beam on the dashboard. The bodywork has a nice flow, exept or the front wheel arches right above the wheel. The scissor doors are very nice. Normally I would agree, but I think in this case the rounded edges of the stacked liftarms do look better than the open pinholes of a panel.

42123 McLaren Senna GTR
Gray Gear replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I dont care about this car, but I am very hyped about the new 2x3 panel. I will pick up a bunch of them as soon as they are available on Bricks&Pieces, I can already think of too many uses for these -

[MOC] Rat-Rod
Gray Gear replied to nikolyakov's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Very nice Model, I love how nasty low it is, and the suicide doors Good job for at least cramming in the HoG steering in there, if no other functions. I would redomment fixing the HoG on the engine with a 3L axle with stud instead of the 4L axle with stop you are using now, that way could skip the connector between the engine and the gear. It would look even more like a carburator that way Ony one question: what is that green bottle on the right side of the engine supposed to be? Thx for posting -
@Spencerkk Very nice, I guess this model would be a good starting point. The R32 and the R33 look pretty similar on first glance, and they are to some extent. I have been told some people even think the R33 is just a facelift of the R33 You'll definatelly have to lengthen the wheelbase tho, because the R33 got a longer wheelbase to improve its high-speed stability. Should be possible. The rest is probably possible through modifications of the bodywork. Dont get me wrong, it will not be easy, but if you have some LEGO building/ MOC experience you should be able to do it.

I think we should try to aprreachiate each others MOCs and work more. I myself try to push myself to comment on any post that I enjoyed to look at and try to find something nice to say or some constructive criticism. Even if it is farming equipment or other stuff I would notreally care about irl. In those cases I just try to find intresting building techniques and clever solutions. Nothing is worse than just getting no response at all, as others have already mentioned above.

I do see that right now, my Honda NSX MOC has been for for sale on Aliexpress for some time now. They even stole my pictures, even though they were really not great Its really not that big of a deal imo. I build these MOCs for myself, and I enjoy doing it. Dont let others ruin the hobby for you. @astyanax You are right, for me the LegoTechnicMastery Channel on Youtube has been a nice source of inspiration. Too bad the last video is 2 yoars old... "everything worthy is done and better that I could ever do" That sound unlikely, exept if you only like a very small selection... What year are we talking of where LEGO was not cool yet? I myself am 21 yo and have never had a dark age, so I would not count myself as an old fart just yet I do agree about the bad instructions being for sale tho. That is bad.
-
I dont think that is fair. I mean come on, did you really expect instructions for technic models to be for free? These models often exeed 3000 pieces and it takes a truckload of time and motivation to make these instructions. None of the average MOC creator here is making big money selling building instructions. I for myself would be happy if the instructions sold would cover even half of what I paid for the actual model. A good technic Supercar MOC should NOT have bodywork with lots of gaps/holes I build 1:8 Scale Technic Supercar MOCs, and it is true for me as well that designing the technic fuctions are the most fun. I love building manual transmissions, steering, suspension. Trying to create the most rigid chassis possible is a lot of fun too. Luckily that is not the only thing that drives me building my MOCs. I only build cars I really love, and I really enjoy figuring out how to accurately recreate the body with bricks. While recreating the car's body you really learn a lot about the car and notice small details about the car's design that would otherwhise stayed unnoticed. Its like getting to know the car better

I feel like there has been a noticable decrease in MOC output, and overall activity in this forum as well compared to last winter. I thought this might be because people like to do things outside when its nice and warm, but I have not felt an activity increase again since the summer. I have only been that active in the online LEGO communtity for 1.5 years, so my experience is quite limited. Maybe its just my mind remembering the past as a better time than like it actually was. I dont know.

[MOC] Large helicopter
Gray Gear replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Looks very nice, I like the helicopters that have a nose like this. Its giving the machine more character. Do you only have the digital model or/will there be a real brickbuilt model? Overall the body look prety clean and simple. But I think there is some room for improvement in the fron area, that huge gap between the curved side panels and the top ones just isn't nice to look at. Thx for sharing! -
If you want to build a Bentley (or a VW Pheaton) you'll have to find a way to squeeze in the gearbox without compromizing the rear seats, because these are very important on luxury cars like this. Under the rear seats has worked quite well for me in my R32 GT-R
