[MOC] Motor grader CAT 120M2
Jundis replied to Jundis's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank Jorge! Means a lot coming from you :-) Sadly this is unlikely, as Volvo don't have graders in their current lineup. https://www.heavyequipmentguide.ca/article/19827/volvo-discontinues-backhoe-loaders-and-motor-graders-transfers-production-to-sdlg- 42 replies

[MOC] Motor grader CAT 120M2
Jundis replied to Jundis's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
With brand new hoses the fit is really tight, but with older ones its perfect and there is no danger of damaging the inlet valve. Maybe Lego change the compund of the rubber or the rubber just softens over the years. Thank you Igor :-) I learned a lot during this building process, especially the fact that stability really comes from using as few parts and connections as possible. Would be great to see your approach as there are not many technic graders. Most of them have only few basic functions, others are way bigger.- 42 replies

[MOC] Motor grader CAT 120M2
Jundis replied to Jundis's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank you :-) It is connected to a small linear actuaor for tilting the front wheels. Mostly used, when the graders work in ditches so they 'lean' themself into the soil.- 42 replies

Hi guys, I'd like to present you my MOC of a Motorgrader, which is based on a CAT 120M2. I worked on this for about 6 months since I saw this video, hence the color scheme. The goal was to recreate as many functions of the real grader as possible, which I'd like to show in this little video. There are many pneumatic and manual functions. The grader also has has pendular suspension on front axle and twin pendular on the back wheels. Pneumatic: - Moving of front blade - Moving of rear ripper - Moving of middle blade with 3 cylinders (up/down/sideways) - Tilting of middle blade Manual: - Steering - Articulation of rear end steering for tighter turning circle or grab steer - Tilting of front wheels - Vertical turning of the blade - Shifting the blade to left/right side - Spring loaded, lockable center pin for left/right swing motion of the blade attachment mechanism One of the most challenging things has been to angle the blade for grading embankments. Therefor I needed this swing motion of the blade mechanism with the lockable center pin (notice the height difference of both pneumatic cylinders). The whole scale has been chosen according to the pneumatic cylinders (friggin expensive 1x11), where the new 68.7 tires fit perfectly in my opinion. As the cab is stuffed with pneumatic hoses, I have dropped the idea of implementing a seat and interieur. The scale fits nicely with the Arocs, which strangely is missing one pneumatic cylinder ...

I think we discussed this on in the 2020H2 thread. Turning mechanism should be possible and also to run 2 functions (rotor movement and tilting) through a turntable. But it will be highly likely needed to rebuild the whole upper structure. It's all about maintaining stability, maybe use a locking mechanism so its not to flimsy in "flight mode". Folding of the blades however will be a very hard task in this scale (maybe with pneumatics...). But it could be done manually already, just unlock the pin. Only problem is the slightly tilted position, which will look a little bit awkward...

Thank you for this comparison! I would even go so far to put the bonnet up 2 studs. Maybe this actually is the biggest problem of the overall look. The bed also starts 1 stud higher on the main frame, adding to this distorted dimensions. As I said earlier: I think Volvo insisted on displaying their logo on the dump bed as big as in the original, thats why Lego had to use the 5x11 panel instead of the 3x11 panel.

At 14:34 he shows the connection of the mechanism, which is done by 2L pin connector and friction pins

Generic Contest Discussion
Jundis replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Motorcycles sound really good! They also have the same good aspects as the well appreciated TC18. They are somehow restricted and therefor more comparable for a contest. Also the models are not too big for newcomers with a smaller brick collection. -

Lego should just look at your drum, that's how it can be done without a big mould. Great work! -
In my believe, prices of Lego sets with 1000+ pieces are totally random and just made up by the marketing department, ignoring price/parts or special components mostly, overpricing electronic components: - Supercar Series: Will be build by new customers --> Overpriced. - 42070 (250€ for 1862 pcs) vs 42082 (230€ for 4057 pcs), both have PF, don't tell me the IR and Controller are so expensive. - 42110 (180€ for 2573 pcs) vs 42096 (150€ for 1580 pcs), both licenced cars

[HELP] Generic Building Help Topic
Jundis replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanx @suffocation ! This so far is the best mechanism I have seen. I'll let it sink in and try if it will fit :-) Different gear sizes with a selector will also work, although they different heights of gear racks are needed. Others like this are just way to big to implement in my moc (and overcomplicated). -

Jundis replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hmm for 5 axles (and even 4 axles), this would be problematic as the second and fourth have different angles in the steering modes. Maybe I drop the crab steer completely and just go for one or two modes. -

Only thing comes in my mind for 42112 B is this Silo Placing Unit (hope this is the right term, could not find a suitable one for the german word: "Silosteller") With the big turntable and a wormgear you should be able to replace the hydrolic/pneumatic cylinders. @Sariel did one in a Model Team style years ago: -
[HELP] Generic Building Help Topic
Jundis replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thx @MikeTwo9398 The thing is, this solution only powers 2 axles, I need 4. Also ideally, one motor should be steering and the other one steering mode (both are PU L-Motors). Also in your solution as you said, funny things happen as the wheels can go evry direction^^ My solution would rather be, that the first axle is directly coupled to the steering motor, then the same axle goes into the gearbox. The second axle only has to be selected for full steering (crab speed) or half steering (other modes). And so on for the other 2 axles. The locking in place is hard to do here... *stillthinking* -
[HELP] Generic Building Help Topic
Jundis replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hi guys! I am currently tinkering around the idea of building a mobile rescue crane with a lot of PU-functions. The real one has different steering modes, the three I want to replicate are the following: In the Claas Xerion, they did this well with a sliding connector. With my intended axle width of 11, and way less space above the axles (and my intended suspension), it seem unlikely to fit in. Another solution is a gearbox, engaging the different axles and changing the angle according to gear ratio. This however will need to always return to a neutral point to engage the gears in the right manner. Also it will be a bit flimsy, since when in neutral, axles not engaged can move in whatever direction possible, not be fixed in place. Is there another solution for this? -
Technic 2020 Set Discussion

Still, we only have 2 functions here (at least if you don't count the movable levers, which Lego lists as functions ). -
Technic 2020 Set Discussion

I think it just wasn't that good compared to the A-model. For example, they could easily have included the winch on the front, which is just left out here. Also the two springs could be used to switch-open a tailgate or something (built out of unused black panels). -
Technic 2020 Set Discussion
Jundis replied to dimaks13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
In my experience it always depends on type/quality of the B-model. The B-Model of the 42082 just wasn't worth the build. The same goes for the 42092 and 94. In my opinion, the imagination of Lego sadly is hindered by the marketing department, as they try so hard to avoid any B-model to be similar to another A-model. For example, there are the glorious Wheel Loader, Forklift and Offroad Truck C-model from the 42082 (Thanks to @nico71). But in the same time, Lego had the 42070, 42079 and the 42081 on sale, so no Trucks, Forklifts and Loaders as a B-model of that vehicles should challenge the A-models of the same type. I am sure Lego could very well come up with very original B-models as 42078 showed, given the designers a little more time, but sadly the marketing guys say no. -
Could be more complex, just go to page 21 to the post of @designer-han he already built the way it should look.

It sure is, but keep in mind that in the 42114 all axles have to connect to the drivetrain (which 8264 didn't have).

*coughing* To be fair, there are versions with and without a tailgate.
