  1. By the way, speaking of minidoll space themes, is anyone here familiar with this guy's work? Perhaps this could be a direction such a theme could go aesthetically. Flickr - Moto | Flickr - Lego theme: Astra
  2. @PremierComix You should also share your many ideas over at this discussion topic!
  3. It's interesting to see how they'd originally planned on giving the S17 Retro Spaceman a pauldron part that would make his planetary atom insignia center-chest rather than on the shoulders, sort of giving him more of a nod to Lego's Classic Spacemen. Also, while the inclusion of a "Sandy" helmet over his new helmet mold would've been cool as a fusion of "Atompunk" and "Raypunk" Spaceman styles, I do prefer the way the final incarnation did turn out without it.
  4. It's this boxed set, right? Amazon.co.uk - Thomas Classic 70th Anniversary Collection - 26 Books If so, I see the HIT logo at the bottom of the back cover, but none of the mentioned copyright statements.
  5. Yes, though not at same rate of bombardment that we had earlier. Yet, it's still pretty persistent and ongoing.
  6. Exactly, amongst many other trivial differences the two differ upon.
  7. Looks like Grandma wasn't just swallowed in one gulp... I didn't even notice the lipstick and glasses until you mentioned it. Nice touch.
  8. At the time of this post, Mric76's The Central Perk Coffee of Friends and LegoFan_506's Mexico City & LEGO = ♥ have four and twenty-four supporters to go in reaching the 10K threshold respectively. Plus, the staff at Ideas announced this: LEGO Ideas - LEGO® Ideas x LEGO House - A Display Of Past 10K Models Even clone brands have touched upon the franchise too, which include LOZ Blocks' line of Creator Expert-esque Thomas and Friends models. LOZ Blocks - Thomas and Friends I only learned about the fate of that line myself just a little while ago, and was quite upset too! That line was an early cornerstone of my childhood so to speak... Unless, maybe Lego could brand their own sets based upon the characters after the original books rather than their TV show adaptation? Mattel, by the way, owns the franchise through their 2011 acquisition of the show's production company (HIT Entertainment) rather than through Awdry's books.
  9. Two other archetypes we could use for either Series 19 and/or beyond are for a Classic Space themed Starship Captain and a Anime/Pacific Rim inspired Mecha Pilot, the former taking inspiration from Star Trek and/or Battlestar Galactica and the latter to pay homage to Lego's Exo-Force. Really? In what particular way? Man, this sketch in particular is my favorite (of course)...
  10. This is kinda what I'm wondering might be the case. Particularly, it was HIT Entertainment that was acquired by Mattel back in 2011, hence them gaining the rights to both the Britt Alcroft produced TV show and its subsequent merchandising rights. Mattel Newsroom - Mattel Announces Acquisition of HIT Entertainment So, if that were to indeed be the case, perhaps then Lego could brand any TTTE-themed sets after Rev. Awdry's Railway Series rather than the TV show. The question is, does Mattel really license the franchise out to companies like Bachmann and Hornby, or could that be the decision of some other potential owner of the characters (a.k.a. Awdry's son Christopher and other family members)? If it were still the former possibility, does Mattel consider them to be minor competitors anyway, given that they primarily cater to an older demographic of customers (a.k.a. Model Railroad Hobbyists)? Could Lego perhaps get around their hold on the franchise by making Expert/D2C sets instead (perhaps under the Creator Expert theme)?
  11. Particularly, I was wondering about the ownership of the Thomas the Tank Engine franchise and it's characters. Even though Mega Construx has the construction toy license due to Mattel flat-out OWNING the franchise, I've been trying to find legal documents (or something) that outline how much say the family of the characters' creator have in distributing the license. Thomas, as you may perhaps know, was not created as a franchise to sell toys, but merely first started out as a series of British children's books.
  12. I love the pairing of Earth Blue atop Sand Blue for the bookstore, and the antique shop is a most lovely looking half-width modular, not to mention that those two are my favorite sort of stores to explore in my spare time.
  13. More modestly, I'd plausibly expect to see a Harbour/Docksides Police subtheme in the near future, something to overlap with the reoccurring Cargo subtheme that pops-up every now and then. I'd wish it were rather a Sky-Fi action/adventure theme, but no, Sky-Fi is something else entirely...
  14. Irregardless of its popularity, I think Lego wouldn't do a CMS for this franchise since many of its characters can be easily shoehorned into playsets, much like with the DC and Marvel Super Heroes themes.
  15. Thanks, I did fill out a suggestion form for such an archetype on this topic a little while ago: Well, the Series 16 Rogue can be sorta thought of as an edgier variant of that archetype.
  16. If that's supposed to be a nightgown she wearing, then she really needed the new slope piece recolored in Lilac instead, as plain-old legs don't seem to convey that.
  17. Honestly, I'm not expecting to see an Overwatch CMS anytime soon here, if ever at all. Like the DC and Marvel Super Heroes themes, I think TLG will be able to shoehorn all and any of the game's many characters into various random playsets without any leftovers that would otherwise feel out of place, if you know what I mean by that.
  18. Though I'm not expecting any Dieselpunk archetypes for The Lego Movie 2 as of yet, to answer this question another way, some Dieselpunk/Decopunk/Raypunk archetypes I'd wish to see for Series 19 and/or other follow-up series would include an Aviatrix, a Rocketeer-like hero, a female counterpart to the Series 17 Retro Spaceman, an Art Deco automobile hood ornament (something inspired after this would be kinda cool), a noir private detective, and perhaps an Art Deco-styled female android inspired after the Maschinenmensch from Friz Lang's Metropolis from 1927. Certainly without a doubt, but I was only commenting on how I personally consider the post-apocalyptic genre to be something else entirely compared to Dieselpunk.
  19. It's not just adult fans, as there are also many kids who still desire more archetypical themes that are akin to what, for instance, Playmobil still offers. I mean, come on, surely you can't deny that there's still a significant market for such playthemes, so why should Lego all-out abandon archetypical classics such as Castle, Pirates, Space, and City for that matter? Seriously, City in particular still stands every year as TLG's best-selling theme, which has no named characters or thoroughly defined storyline at all.
  20. Sorry to necro-bump this topic after more than a year, but this subject has been bugging me again recently, and I was particularly wondering... If Mattel owns Thomas & Friends as a franchise (media and merchandise, that is), do they really own the characters? More specifically, what ownership rights do Rev. Awdry's family have over his creations? I know this is a question that seemingly has nothing to do with Lego, but again, it's kinda related to LEGO Ideas once again, as I'm particularly curious as to why staff there are approving of submissions based upon the characters. As many of you may know, project submissions have to be reviewed for IP availability on a daily basis before they can put them up for voting by other users.
  21. Perhaps this has been asked before by others here or elsewhere, but, how should one go about researching terms of licensing agreement and ownership of particular franchises/intellectual properties for an Ideas project? Can legal documents outlining the finer details be found about online?
  22. It's not to say that I wouldn't care to see any Dieselpunk archetypes, but the two settings we know about so far for the sequel wouldn't seem to accommodate any such characters. Besides, as a slight nitpick, I personally don't equate Mad Max/Post-Apocalyptic archetypes with the Dieselpunk genre.
  23. And, besides minifigures, there's a lot more freedom in the designing of the playset builds too!
