Opinions on LEGO Technic Theme
teflon replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
My 2 cents: I've been slowly drifting away from Lego and Technic. I haven't bought a set for a year or so and I have unfinished creations on my desk with slim chance of actually finishing them. I am not totally out, since I am still very much active with FLL. Nevertheless I've witnessed Technic sets to become quite large and even more expensive. But I think this is our fault. I remember the polls that shows that we (technic nerds) were dying for large USC-kind of sets and willing to pay. And Lego delivered. I therefore think that Technic theme is stronger than ever. Of course some romanticism is gone - a lot of people is now selling their plans, but some people still offer their ideas for free. I just hope all of this will continue in the future. -
[MOC] RC Buggy powered by BuWizz
teflon replied to Anto's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I do admire the simplicity and efectiveness - at least on video it seems quite stable and it does not fall apart easily. Excellent work!- 19 replies

What an inovative (for Lego) contraption. It's excellent blend of form and function. And it works, too. Amazing!

Indominus Rex (Jurassic World)
teflon replied to braker23's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Those poor rabbits. But you have to feed him with something, therefore I understand. I also like the color of teeth. It seems our Rex has been smoking quite a bit. Even has some rotten ones at the back. I like the attention to funny details. Good work!- 32 replies

Oh dear, this brings back memories. Thanks for this very detailed guide. I really appreciate this since rcx was my first robotic kit. I remember using original Lego software with Windows 2000 (not ME) and XP. I remember that installation was a drag. Have you perhaps tried to install it? I liked the IR port of RCX as it enables one to control Power Functions with it (a chap named Bob Kojima made some sort of demo program a while ago). However my knowledge of programing is so low, that I couldn't do anything serious with this.

Nico71's Creations
teflon replied to nico71's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is very interesting. Do you think it would be possible to convert this bunch of photos into 3D model using Autodesk' 123D Catch. I have experiences only with non-see through objects. But X-ray pictures might confuse the program. Does anybody knows about freeware program that can made 3D models out of X-ray pics? -
Happy 40th Technic !
teflon replied to Seasider's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, I would like to hear a bit more from Mr. Jan, who designed 8860. And he was in Lego for 44 years. That is just great. I wouldn't mind listening to him about technic evolution over 40 years, more about the design process back there (I liked it when he told us that the idea for the 8860 set came from his bug) etc. The host was a bit overwhelming. -
Mini Dumper with BuWizz
teflon replied to teflon's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@leinaud I wanted to add a cabin something in line with the original, however the bunch of wires made this impossible. Perhaps I could do a macrame from Lego cables. @GroundskeeperWillie Thanks. It was a lot of rebuilding. But I still am not quite satisfied. @TechnicRCRacer Thanks for remark, yes, stairs should be turned around. Sorry, I cannot produce instructions. -
Holly bricks. This looks quite a challenge! Thanks Nikolay for the instructions of really creative plane.

I had a long conversation with Roni of BuWizz fame about desirable vehicles used with his invention. Apart from electrifying large Lego technic vehicles, we were thinking about producing a simple and low-part-number vehicle, which can be quickly build and used. Well, this was the intention, however I was not very successful with this. I mean, it's not a problem regarding dimensions etc., but more of a general shape. My cars look like something from another world but not in a good sense. So, please Sariel and other well established builders, perhaps you could just skip this presentation:-) But then I have spotted Mini Mining Truck in 42055 and it seemed cute (perhaps I am a bit biased towards large models but small technic models are generally quite nice and full of features). Therefore I decided to motorized it. At first I've tried with Lego components but found out there is no room. Then I decided to use BuWizz, since allowed a bit smaller footprint. However, the truck kept growing in size. I have motorized the propulsion (I wanted to add the differential, however it kept the truck to slip while navigating rough terrain), steering and raising/lowering the dump. In addition I have also put in some lights, however BuWizz application at this moment does not support switches (hint, hint) so using lights is a bit of a drag. There are several issues I did not addressed properly: single back wheels (not enough room at this scale), not uniform color (lack of parts), cabin missing (I used the space for cables) etc. I have rebuild the d*mn thing at least 10 times but I guess this just speaks about my inability to do great technic job. Nevertheless, the truck moves and it's quite fun to play with. And I guess this is one of the main features.

[MOC] Big ferris wheel
teflon replied to veryrusty's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Your picture does not do justice. It seems small and cute on the first glance but seeing full picture I realized the inner red ring is made out of 20 liftarms 13. And the whole diameter of the wheel is at least 120 cm across. This is massive and congratulations on keeping it cute. This is not easy with monster like this. Can you explain a bit more about previous versions? Have you tried building with axles and connectors? And I would also like to see some details, attachment to the center, gondolas etc. -
Stringatron string accelerator
teflon replied to jam8280's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Congrats. This is very unique idea and also seems like a lot of fun. I also like the rope figures you create, it seems like a small art project on its own. And it's first time I noticed jazz for music background of Lego videos. If you would upscale the machine, you could get the machine for toilet papering things. Can you imagine toilet paper minigun:-)- 11 replies

Please also note that TLG has moved on from family run business to a global corporation. Due to increase in TLG size, there is a lot more people involved with the decision making. And I guess TLG also wanted to check, what they can get away with it. Therefore I would like to thank Sariel and others for your critical but constructive approach to support TLG from steering away too much. Therefore even 42070 B in its terribleness could be useful (just not for playing). And also TLG does listen to us so I am sure they will not repeat the same mistake. They'll do another one:-) But again, sometimes I get overoptimistic.
-
Sure. I understand the differences. But you could also said that 42070 has some features over the Porsche (at least two more tires). And we can go back and forth on comparison. But my point is that there cannot be just above average models. And I guess 42070 is unfortunately like this. TLG this time has tried big and mean machine, which seems to be admired by only a few. But I do think they will learn from this. C'mon, this is the same guy(s) who gave us 8258.
-
@Sariel I do agree with your findings (disclaimer: I haven't seen the set and I will probably pass it). I also don't like the pricing but I guess that's the way things are' going. The porsche is expensive as hell but it's selling like mad. At least in Europe. So basically we allowed TLG to charge us a lot for the biggest sets. I don't like it. However I do recognise your effort to put TLG in the right track. Keep positive was regarding the quality of discussion, but I guess the heat wave spoiled it a bit. @MajklSpajkl Not kidding. My last 6-wheel truck was 8462 Super Tow Truck from 1998. If you think 42070 is ugly, try that one. And yes, I still have some dark turquise pieces hidden somewhere. Trust me, my friend, you haven't seen sh*t :-)
-
Well, I would not be to harsh on this model. Sure, I don't like it but I recognize some effort to go in some new direction. Larger, more wheels and larger price. I am sure Lego will learn from that. But I also think some less-that-perfect models are also necessary to explore some options. Perhaps Uwe's models are not perfect for MY taste but I do recognize his effort to search for some new milestones. Please keep positive. In worst case, if you don't like the 42070, you will get to keep your 250€ or spend it on something else (I've done that already, I own two Saturn V :-))
-
Thank you Sariel for your review. I was expecting that research vehicle will have at least AWS. You've been quite harsh regarding both A and B models. I am wondering if this was a plan from Lego from the beginning - to tone down the expectations after 2016. Perhaps we'll be more grateful for the future (great) sets. With all the elaborate design process I (want to) believe that this flop decrease in design quality has some deeper meaning.

Thanks for the insight. I am aware of 4 contacts and their roles, however I just never though of using BuWizz as normal battery. I agree, the discovery is not in the same league as discovering cure for cancer but regarding that the kid is 9 years old, he did a great job. And I forwarded it as curiosity, nothing else.
-
My 5 cents or maybe two: I am also observing a higher part count recently, especially in technic models. But I think the main reason for that is drive (or demand) by the community like ours to make more perfect sets. Recently I have rebuild two 10ish years old sets: 8421 and 8285. And I was somewhat disappointed by building experience. It seemed a bit non-adventurous, at least compared to modern ones. I think contemporary technic models are near perfect. Surely, each year we find a reason or two to complain about this and that but I think we are in the golden age of Lego technic. I just hope it will last. Regarding pins - have you noticed that there is less and less bushes in the models. The bushes were omnipresent but now we only get few tens. Not complaining, just thinking out loud - larger pin count could be related to that. Special pins and axles eliminated a lot of need for bushes.

My kid just realized that he could use BuWizz as a battery box. His phone was dead and he wanted to drive his (mine?) trains. So he just connected the IR receiver to BuWizz and it worked without the need for running the BuWizz app. Well, perhaps it's normal for a majority but at least I was surprised. Now I have a problem, how to get my BuWizz back.

[MOC] Citroën DS
teflon replied to Anto's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@I_Igor: yes, Luis de Funes was very popular in our (ex)-country but I do connect him more to 2CV than DS. But I was looking at google image search and I found this. I hope this will be available as an upgrade kit:-)- 33 replies

[MOC] - 42055 MK 288 BWE
teflon replied to Orinoko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Holly molly. This is big. I am interesting why you bought 9 sets? Didn't you have some extra bricks to start with? I am aware that big machines "eat" bricks like candy and also that 42055 is a fine selection of parts, however I am still baffled regarding number 9. It's just huge. Sorry, but I cannot imagine how I could convince my wife that I need 9 already enormous sets. Of course you did a splendid job. I really admire the bucket wheel. It's great with somewhat similar rotation mechanics (using new 1/4 yellow round liftarms) as original but a fine upgrade. It looks even more realistic than original. I understand why you needed a year. Such a construction is quite demanding and I am glad you nailed it. I also like the details like overlooking bridges, cabins, ladders etc. And the crew also. What about the size or scale? I would say it's in the range of 1.5-2m, which is 1:72 scale. Am I close? In that case use of minifigs (themselves around 1:48) is reasonable and colorful approximation.
