I have the smaller version of the class one unlimited built at the moment but it's not difficult to put together again the bigger one as well. Once the instructions are finalized (and I'll have some time) I'm 100% sure I will build yours so the buggies will run side by side

Based on my experience the weight difference of the power sources does not matter, even with a very light vehicle you can barely see the difference. The lack of high voltage option will have a more visible effect, as you'll have only 7.2V (unless you buy fresh alkaline batteries for every run). I made a comparison video to see the practical difference of the power sources:

@Didumos69 I love this one much more than I should... almost makes me want to buy the Bugatti just to do this mod

Powered Up

Compatibility will be a key element of their survival and success - I hope they'll find a way to use the future Powered Up physical controllers with their systems. -
BuWizz or SBrick?
kbalage replied to Tarix819's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Didumos69 it is possible to use BuWizz as a battery box but based on my experience if you power it on it will default to low or normal mode. You have to start a profile in the app, switch the speed to the one you'd like to use and manipulate the controller that belongs to the output used. Then you can switch the the SBrick app and use that for control. Not that convenient to do it every time you want to use it. I think it is only reasonable to use these two together if you really need the programmable functions of SBrick but you also want to use the power BuWizz has to offer (and money is not a factor as this is the most expensive combination ) -
Technic Pub

I think these separate topics are fine. It starts with the first pictures but after the release of the set the discussion continues about the details, opinions etc. Not sure if we need the separate "mods & improvements" topics for each though :) -
BuWizz or SBrick?
kbalage replied to Tarix819's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This topic was discussed a lot of time, there's no definite answer - it depends on how would you like to use it. Both of them has pros and cons. SBrick has a more polished interface, can use programmed sequences, SBrick Plus can be also programmed via Scratch, it can use some sensors as well. It also has official gamepad support now. In the meantime you still need a separate battery box (needs more space) and you can only use the power of the batteries in your BB. BuWizz is compact, it's a rechargeable power source & the controller in a single box. It can provide ~11V so if you want to run e.g. a buggy motor at full potential then you won't find anything better. The app is pretty simple although it is now possible to customize the controls. No programming and sequences at this point, no built-in gamepad support (the brickcontroller app can control both BuWizz and SBrick with a gamepad). You need to find out what aspects are more important for you and decide based on that. -

Technic 2018 Set Discussion
kbalage replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's it. Apparently this is part of a new platform called "Powered Up", Brother's Brick has the full press release about it. Some interesting parts: Leveraging the power elements and coding language developed for last year’s award-winning build and code toolkit, LEGO BOOST, and other LEGO connected toys, Powered Up enabled sets give kids the ability to modify and personalize their experiences by adding dynamic motion control and in some instances simple coding. Powered Up LEGO sets will range from simply powered to remote controlled to smart device connected, creating endless customized play possibilities. Some building sets will ship with Powered Up capabilities included in the box, while others will be Powered Up-enabled, giving kids the option to add power features to their creations if they are interested. Additional Powered Up sets launching in 2018 include the LEGO City Passenger Train and LEGO City Cargo Train, which add simple remote-control functionality to classic LEGO building. The LEGO DUPLO® Steam Train and LEGO DUPLO Cargo Train introduce kids as young as 2 years old to cause and effect play, a pre-cursor to coding, with low-tech brick accessories that utilize sensors and color-coded train track elements. This seems to be very interesting, having a platform that shares the elements and the controls across different themes and ages. I wonder if it means that all of these sets can be controlled and programmed via the Boost app. -
Technic 2018 Set Discussion
kbalage replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Not exactly Technic but a remotely controlled set with app control so there has to be some sort of PF 2.0 parts in it. Based on the image there's no real steering, seems to be really simple for the price. More images here: -
@agrof I did a quick test with my 9398 and the V1 receivers I have here (including yours from 2017) have a worse performance than the V2 receiver. This supports the assumption that no design change/upgrade was made to them. It was a quick test on a slope, the vehicle was able to climb it with the V2 but could not do it with all the others. I'll do some more tests with different motor/receiver combinations and probably show it in my next PF tutorial video.

Powered Up
kbalage replied to dimaks13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
PF 1.0 was around for more than 10 years, before that there were again different motors/controllers/etc (like a train controller with buttons). I suppose it happens every time when Lego tries to upgrade the system but I wouldn't say immediately "no" to the new stuff just because we got used to the old one. The possibility to turn the button section of the train remote seems to be interesting and useful, I hope there'll be something similarly good coming for Technic sets as well. -

Well they didn't have sticks for trains either previously... let's wait and see what controllers will be provided for the Technic sets. -
@agrof I'm planning to test the different receivers with my 9398, I'm curious now - feel free to join :) It's interesting to hear you had 8043 with V2s, I thought that came before 9398 and with V1s only.

I have V1 receivers with 3 different production dates between 2015 and 2017 and I took one V2 to compare with. All V1 receivers I checked have the LB1836M driver chip. Unfortunately I don't have a V1 receiver that is "pre-V2" for sure, but if the driver chip is the main difference then I don't think these ones will perform any better. Took some photos, probably you recognize something that I don't :) V2 "40K2" side 1 / V2 "40K2" side 2 V1 "36N5" side 1 / V1 "36N5" side 2 V1 "31N6" side 1 / V1 "31N6" side 2 V1 "20N7" side 1 / V1 "20N7" side 2

I have a Bluetooth game controller which can be paired by pressing a combination of buttons, it enters in pair mode that way and if you do the same process on the other side the units are paired. Might be something similar here as well. The configuration is another thing, I'm sure you need a smart device for that. Hopefully it'll have a default profile so you don't necessarily need to tinker with a smartphone for a quick play. -
@Sariel not sure where/when that was made clear by Lego, I'm just curious do you have a source? The "official PF FAQ" only says this about the V2 receiver: The IR Receiver V2 has an improved motor driver giving you lower power loss and longer battery lifetime. Currently, the IR Receiver V2 is only available in the 9398 4x4 Crawler. The IR Receiver V2 can be recognized by a V2-print added on the front. There's also a statement cited here coming from Lego that blames the M motor design for the issues and promises an upgrade to the M motor rather than ditching the V2 receiver for further sets. Apparently the designers changed their mind and did not release an upgraded M motor for the favor of keeping the V2 receiver as probably no other officially motorized sets needed the abilities of the V2 receiver ever since. Even though 42030 had V2s on the cover, the box had V1 receivers in it. Anyway I think to original question is not really relevant now as we have PF 2.0 coming, I'm pretty sure there won't be any new sets with the V2 IR receivers. I'm still wondering if there were any enhanced non-V2 receivers released after the V2s or the design remained the same.

@Philo did you manage to test the new IR receivers since then? I'm doing some tests now with V2 receivers and some new non-V2 ones. I have one from 42065 and one from 42070 (both from 2016) so they supposed to have a newer design, but in a similar situation like you've tested them with the buggy motor the V2 still performs visibly better. Like the others I thought the design was upgraded and the new ones supposed to have a similar performance like V2 had but I have doubts now.

Better later than never, this is my review & test of the set. I have to say I was positively surprised after all the reviews. The set has its flaws and there's a ton of things to improve, but I found it fun to drive around and it performed pretty ok for me outdoors as well.

42083 - Bugatti Chiron
kbalage replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Can't wait the review, I wish I had the opportunity to be there at the reveal :) Some questions: - Were there any technical features of the Chiron that Lego designers planned to implement but they could not due to complexity or the limitation of the available parts? - How did they select the final model scale, were there different sizes considered during the design process? - What was the level of involvement of the Bugatti engineers in the Lego model's design process? - How many design iterations did they have before arriving to the final model? -
I'm happy to see that the Brickcontroller app is working for you :) The car turned out to be amazing (no surprise), love the performance and especially the smooth suspension. This is something I'd still like to achieve with my mini buggy but probably that's simply too light for that :)
