Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS) Intro Thread, Era II
Bart replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Amuzing to read that after all this time people are turning round to one of the original starting ideas of BOBS, giving a reason to build and there by to improve ones quality of builds :p -

It isn't? I posted it here, posted in the monthly freebuild thread, filled out the form. The pending question was answered positive in the thread about the build. Did I forget something? -

I personally like the two masted better, with a big boom and gaff sail on the aft mast. swooping over the quarterdeck (cabin top) -

You can still have an working capstan, just need a longer rope/chain. *on the chain part, I just learned that the Brittons during the Roman times already had iron chain because they couldn;t make rope strong enough back then. After the fall of the Roman Empire a lot of knowledge was lost, and the Vikings returned to using stones on rope. The first 'modern' use of chain was in 1809 by lt. Samual Brown (Royal Navy) onboard the Penelope. Because of increase in ship size hemp rope not being strong enough, and the hemp rotted to fast in the East and West Indies, making the crew sick. By 1830 chains where common on the world fleet. So a chain is accurate too :) -

During the 'Age of Sail' ships (we commonly use as a base of reference for our Lego models) didn't have an anchor chain, they had an anchor rope. (Maybe some knowledgeable EB member knows when the change occurred?) The anchor rope it self didn't go round the capstan to lift the anchor, it is too thick. The capstan has a so called messenger rope, and endless loop, going around rollers in the manger (place to clean the dirt of the hauled in anchor rope and let the water drain away, not to store livestock) the anchor rope was secured to this messenger rope by a small pieces of line. On even bigger ships (three masted) the capstan dedicated to lifting the anchor was even behind the main mast (where it also worked on the big yards) so the messenger rope ran all the way trough the ship (around the masts) giving it a long length and lots of pieces of line to transfer the weight from the anchor and rope to the messenger rope to the capstan. Dedicated crew members (maybe the powder boys?) where in charge of connecting, and loosening the small pieces before the reached the capstan, the anchor rope was stored in the hold midships on racks so it could dry. Seen in the picture, the hawse holes, with one anchor rope (thick) coming in, the manger(boards) the rollers and the messenger rope. http://i.imgur.com/csa1vgp.jpg http://i.imgur.com/at1HDUL.jpg?1 https://imgur.com/jPdPYOx Here some links to some ship deck plans, where you can see the location. (you can find more on google, searching for something like 'Frigate deck plan"/"age of sail ship deck plan"/ "ship of the line" etc etc) Hope that helps, enjoy your build. Bart -

@spud I would change the fore mast and capestan around Small arms where stored in racks/boxes/ arms rooms on big vessels. It is my understanding that the ship provided the arms to the crew (sailors -> cutlasses and pikes (knifes would be personal) Officers probably came with their own sabre and pistol. For marines rifles would be issued by their garrison. -
note, a navigator/officer is not the same as an helmsman. helmsman is somebody who steers at the wheel, just a common sailor following orders from the navigator/officer.

Thanks you, you have my permission to move if that suits the build better. Might change the title aswell too. "1:40 steamship from 1910" I'll have a look what happens when I transvere it to the normal mode in LDD, or put it into Bricklink. Bart

Uh select them? I build in the digital designer extended mode. LDD version 4.3 maybe you need to do something in the script to unlock it, I recall something like that. But that was for old versions. Thanks on the detail part, I try to do as much as possible to counter balance the fact it's digital. Bart

Cool, thanks a lot! Yeah maybe I was a bit ahead by posting the notice there, i'll fill out the webform. Bart

Ahaa that explains. Well if anybody still had the mod, they may contact me ;).

he left? @msx80 is still posting in the bluerender thread. *but I also found version 6 there, and downloaded the other one, I'm going to experiment.

thanks I'm going to try that! (how on earth do you know what version I have of bluerender, I didn't ...)

thanks! I was expecting something along those lines about the license, no worries, it was a try.

very nice gate! may I ask which rendering software you use? that it outlines the bricks like that. I use bluerender and it makes walls like that into a flat smooth surface. Bart

Bart replied to Jacob Nion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
i've build a small digital moc, a counterfeit working out of Totuga counterfeiting *not sure if this counts as an artisan. question pending in the moc thread, -
Larsk was trained as a scribe as a kid, who soon found he had a talent of faking handwriting, tax stamps and signatures. He traveled to Bastion as a young man, and now moved on to Tortuga. Sometimes he works out of his home in town forging letters and documents, but most of the time he comes on to ships, usually of sea rats, to paint stamps. But now he found himself on a Oleon merchant, painting over Corrington stamps on liquor barrels to make Eslandonian stamps, while the Captain is bribing an Eslandonian official. The bosun is making sure the official thought the bribe to be sufficient. He'd better hurry up and keep his mouth shut, the bosun was looking far to eager to make his knife to use. Can I register Larsk as a small artisan in Tortuga? if so is this question on the webform "Is this build able to be licensed as a land-based property?" a yes or a no? I felt the need to produce something to celebrate my brief revival in Bobs, and the sudden departure again :O, (of to work, so back on pause) It's just an afternoon build in LDD but I tried to create a scene, in LDD it becomes very static fast in my experience. posing props and figs is hard on the computer. but the unlimited supply of bricks is an bonus. Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS) Intro Thread, Era II
Bart replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Kolonialbeamter thanks, that is cool. Haven't spend a single coin the whole era still one of the poorest players :P you'd think having the only pleasure house in Bastion would have given you a bigger income, but maybe it doesn't have enough employees ;) But Rodsh is still in some foggy waters exploring the world far beyond the bobs maps, so it may be months before he (or his associates) begin a new place. I wish, I was planning to dust of the bricks, but Tuesday I got a call I've to sail Friday. So I'll be at sea (the real wet one) for the next 3 months. -

I started out active in bobs Era 1 with (i blieve 2) buildings that could make dubloons, but as far as i know i never spend them, did they accumulate all those time? and did they transvere to era 2? where do I find out? -

@Bregir vey nice curvature on that gunboat, nice to use the bricks to their limit like that. for me the colourscheme is excellent too. -
Time for an update, Bow to stern in bricks now. still plenty modeling to do on the hull. I did a lot of details, boxes on deck, navigation lights, davits and longboats, skylights, ventilation hoods, emergency steering on the stern, etc. And a full interior for the aft accomodation. from aft to forward. Officer salon with heat stove benches and coffee table. a hall way with a stair going down and a paintry on portside. then the cartograph room, with two large tables PS and SB with big windows, a large cabinet for storing charts and a high cabinet for storing tools. Hydrograaf mockup5 by Bart, on Flickr Question, I made the overall picture with Bluerender, and I know of Blueprint for making building instructions, but is there also a piece of software that checks if the bricks I've chosen in that colour actually exist? Because I could make the longboats transparant purple digitally but I know for sure that those don't exist in real live. And I still want to build it so that I could build it for real some day. 5948 bricks and counting Best regards Bartt

Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS) Intro Thread, Era II
Bart replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Hello wanderers of the Brick sea! A pigeon brought a message that my name was mentioned on this place. Something about tags as a reward to won/participation of challenges. I was (and still am sort of) very enthousiastic about BoBS in the beginning, and submitted some work. Then offline life caught up with me, and the bricks remained in their bin for more then a year. For me to notice that BoBS has entered a second Era. I'm very happy that BoBS is still going and still enjoyed by lots of people. I would really like to have time to participate again, but I can tell you now I don't :( either I'm month at sea (I'm an actual real live sailor) or not at home due to other things. So I don't feel entitled to a tag, but if it was bestowed on me I wouldn't refuse it and be proud of it. The ship I ones started for BoBS is still a WIP, last week I moved my lego boxes and found and kept it half together. My character is still "alive" I'd say. (althouh I dont really know how many years have past in bobs and if that is possible) and still a Pirate ;) anyway thanks for tagging me, that already means alot. for all the people still building keep it up! I will be back some day. Greetings Bart (pirate captain Rodsh Derr) If I have time for lego I occasionally spend it on LDD where I'm building a scale model of an old steamer I work on (link below)
