  1. Dear Mayor of Bastion, It has come to my attention, that the Town of Bastion is a few buildings away from calling itself a Large Town. But during my recent visit it became to me as if there is not much building activities going on in the town. Bastion requires two more commercial buildings and three more factories. If those are to be build, that would improve our trade position, might pull in more ships, visitors and maybe even citizen, which will improve the money flow into Bastion and the Sea Rats fraction as a whole. Hereby I offer to pay half of the construction costs of any of those five buildings build, free of any attachments. If anyone has build such a building in Bastion I will order the Doubloons transferred. Just last week I became the owner of a residence in Bastion, sending a letter there with the details of the build will suffice. (ooc. pm to Bart) Maybe the Mayor wishes to expand my offer to builders from community funds? But that is a decision I leave in his capable hands. Fair Winds, Capt. Rodsh Derr
  2. Nice build, I like what you did with the floor plan, all odd shaped, (no square) And great placement of tools and bottles. Bart
  3. The strongbeam is staying. (I'm not even sure if that is the correct name though, but it's a name that is used on a ship, maybe not in that time or for that purpose. But it fits) One could make the argument that ships where you don't see that, the reinforcements to take the pull of the main sheet* are below the deck. *Sheet is the line (rope) where one controles the sail with. You mean like having the whole hold open? I portrayed her with her bow down in the sea, deck edge below water. Would you like to sail then with the cargo hold open to take in all that water? :D But also as promised, a close up of the windlass: It's supposed to resemble some of the earlier windlass designs, where there where spokes inserted and pulled to rotate. It's build out of two headlight bricks 5 studs apart, a 6 stud long rod, (flange hidden inside the headlight brick) 3 technic axle pieces, and 2 "stickwith holders" as LDD calls them. representing the spokes mentioned above. Oh and I lowered the hatch one plate, so it's less of a hut ;D Bart
  4. Yes, that is the cargo hatch. I think everybody knows the gratings (a lot of times build by showing the back side of headlight bricks). But on deck, especially a deck that has a change of getting (a lot) of water on it. Those hatches where raised, (that raised part is called the coaming) And the grating or wooden panels would be covered with a tarpaulin. And that tarpaulin I intended to show here with the green curved bricks. But I might lower the coaming a plate, now it's 3 plates high and then the green. Giving it indeed the impression of a sort of deck housing.
  5. you just made mentally step on a brick You are right I mixed them up, my apologies, and thanks for point it out. Legostone's ship is indeed a brig. (making the last sail a spanker) @Roadmonkeytj Yes I can make a close up, I'll do it this afternoon. Yes the tiles behind the carohold are the crew hatch, (companion way) I'm not happy about that yet. But I'm not willing to remove the strongbeam for the connection of the mainsail sheet. So I gave myself little space. Bart
  6. The aftmost sail on @Legostone's ship would be called the mainsail in this case because it's the biggest. the lowest boom is just called the boom. the upper one is called a gaff. the sail inbetween the masts And now it gets weird because Legostone calles his ship a Brig but it is rigged as something we now call a topsail schooner. welcome to the wonderfull world of shipping, where ship names and labels differ over time period and sometimes the ship is labeled by hull shape and purpose and other times by rig design. Anyway I don't know how that sail is called on a brig. but on a schooner that would be the schoonersail with the schoonerboom and schoonergaff connected to the (smaller) foremast. To make it a brig one would loose the fore and aft sail on the foremast, and add more yards and add yards on the mainmast, and then the name of the aft fore and aft sail would indeed e a spanker. INot to make things complicated I'll leave out the schoonerbrig. and just indicate you here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sail_plan ------------- On another note, I've continued with my ship. and to keep personal morale up, here is a view: She looks very bow heavy now, but that is due to fact I angled her that way, and I did most work there. As I work my way to the aft I hope the visual point of gravity shifts more. I'm not happy yet with the companionway or the hatch covers, I'd might change the hatchcover to a grating design. Bart
  7. Very nice build, lots of good techniques. I like the 'dolls' for the gent's hat's and capes. As for the guessing game 6 and 8
  8. @Legostone, you are right a one stud mast looks good enough, and with all the lines and stuff on it it will look just right. I like the lashing with the technical ring parts for the big fore stays. I've used that technique also on a small build, on the side stays, and you can easily tighten it way to much, so be carefull.
  9. I'm just gonna drop this here. To force myself to finish it. I've titeled the ldd document "dispatch runner" so a fast but small ship. Probably going to be cutter rigged. If anyone has a valid technique, I can steal uhm learn from, of making 1,5 stud diameter masts that'd be fantastic. And yes te use of the curved pieces in the bow is inspired by others here. Haven't gotten around to acquiring pov-ray. It doesn't want to download over my internet connection. So I'll make do on the water part of the other moc which is slowly taking shape and being filled in.
  10. Thanks for the responses, I got it now I think :D
  11. I'm at loss, how does the upkeep of ships work. The About Ships page is all but clear to me about that fact. and the 'upkeep calculator' is the same table but then in an excel form where there is nothing to be filled in or to be calculated. Lets say I'm a starting player and only have a single class 2. compared to a long time brick sea dweller. who has a class 2, class 4 and a class 6 compared to someone who only has a class 10 floating fortress. lets keep the ship levels out of the picture for now, because I do understand how that works. If any other comparison is more practical. go for that. I just don't know how this part works at all. Bart
  12. Nice microbuild! I like the fact that houses vs trees vs ships are to scale with eachother. Bart
  13. Thank you both. Maybe it's not really the style originally set out for Bastion. but as it seems to be, there is hardly any building activity there anyway. And I feel that in any other fraction town, the Mayor would have demolished it, rather then letting it stand to be forgotten. Maybe I'll try my hand at refurbishing. but one of the reasons I went for grey is that I couldn't decide on a colour scheme, and I wanted the vine to be the eye-piece. And grey really helps giving it the abandoned look. (together with the blacked out windows.) Bart
  14. @LM71Blackbird It's already better, but if you don't mind me saying, now it looks like the middle is sagging. I always think of the bow and stern curving up, instead of the middle down. with the curve become stronger towards the ends. You can see that in @Legostone his vessels above, which are all fine vessels btw!. I'd ditch the IFS style gunports. I think your ship is to big for that. Pov-ray I'll look in to that. but weeks rendering o.O
  15. Currently in Bastion. Rodsh: So? What do you think? Cathy: Think?, It’s just some hideous abandoned house. R: I bought it. C: What? Why would you do that? R: To use as a house. C: For whom? We’ve a ship! R: I Thought you’d like it. C: Like it? Did you got hit with a 2x2 brick in the head or something? It hasn’t got a scrape of paint on it. It’s completely overgrown with some poisonous vine. Not to mention the strangler bush over there! R. Poisonous? it got nice flowers C: DO you even have more then one stud in that brain of yours?! R: It can be painted you know. and some gardener can take down that vine. C: Well I’m not living there. I’d rather sail before the mast on an Oleon Order ship. C. How much did you pay for it anyway? R. Just five Doubloons. C. I’m going back to the ship. We are sailing tomorrow, we've got a ball to attent remember. OOC. I was experimenting with building a vine on a wall. and with the current grey scale challenges on the web in my mind, this was the result. The story followed soon after, and then I decided it was worth the post on here. And yes I did this because I got stuck with the water issue on the moc I had planned, (see shipwright thread)
  16. What is WTG? but nope what ever it is, I'm a sailor, an actual one, not the brick variety we send on adventures here. I'm an engineer onboard a merchant ship. Currently in the Black Sea, enroute to St. Petersburg. SAME! although the buyable bricks where limited. I remember when it couldn't handle anything over a 1000 bricks :O. (side eyeing the brick count at my current moc and seeing its 6k) on your ship, I feel it's to long for its width. but maybe the design and shape of the next decks could change that look. How many masts have you planned? If I can just say, 4 mast barque. And leave you with your curiosity. Bart
  17. There are a dozen international borders between me and my real bricks (I'm not even on the same continent :O) (while legally being in the Netherlands) . And a side note I don't even have enough transparent plates to cover one wave as I did above. I might work around the issue by posting rendered and not-rendered pictures to show off the water, and what is beneath the surface. Bart
  18. scrolling trough the torso design is something that can most certainly be improved in LDD
  19. That's a nice ship Spud! Excellent portrayal of water too. I also like the fact that the barge has a steering oar instead of a rudder.
  20. what do you mean? There are dozens of hair pieces, hats, armour, bags, swordslings. and a score of designs to choose from for faces and torsos. If you look at my last build, the shipwright brothers, You;ll see four minifigs in exactly the same clothing, just a different face print and headpiece, hair or hat. That's the nice thing about soldiers you can just copy paste the design. and change only the face. :O
  21. I'm building water. But now I run into a problem, when rendering the ldd file with bluerender. The transparant bricks aren't actually that transparant. In building mode vieuwing it in LDD it self looks way different. example: How it looks rendered by bluerender Test piece with different colour transparant brick, from top to bottom. Dark blue, Light Blue, Turquase Blue, White. This is how it looks in LDD it self. As you can see after rendering, the transparant plates become less see trough. And as you can see in the last picture, I was trying with different colours underwater to show rising land etc. But after the render that is almost impossible to see. Anyone any advice? Bart
  22. The ship isn't going to be used as a ship, it's part of a land based construction. There are other ship parts in/on/around the creation too, which I build purposely for this moc. But when I come around to posting it, I will give credit in that topic aswell.
  23. Question about morale. Someone (I honestly don't remember who or even when) ones posted an lxf file of a ship hull to download. the hull was build based on @Captain Green Hair's tutorial on how to build a frigate, maybe he did post the lxf. but the original name of the document is in German so I don't know ... Anyway the model was very basic, only the prefabs hull and the technique to start the tumble home. But the question is: Can I use this in a MOC for BOBS, I'd like to use only the bow section, and add my self the mast, bowsprit, figure head, yards, rigging, capstan, etc etc. It's not the mayor part of the MOC, which will qualify as a large land based MOC. But due to the fact it's a ship with a mast and such it's big next to another big thing. Or is CGH's tumblehome technique become so common that it's not even an issue, and I'm worried for nothing. When I'm building in LDD, I always try to copy paste as least as possible. And even if I do, I try to change details so there isn't appearing a patern, where there isn't supposed to be one. Bart
  24. Bluerender needs some fiddling with background colours and pixel count, is my experience. I've upped the pixels to 2048 x 1080. It drastically increases the render time. (to the region of 1-2 hours) but I think it's worth it. Your barraks as a building is solid, and well build. I think the bullet holes are a well thought off edition. And I know its a pain in the megablocks to do in LDD but try to do some minifigs or random items barrel, plants etc., I can tell from experience, it gets easier with practice. And it really enhances the build. Bart
  25. Amazing build. I really like the foliage and rock combinations, and the weathered look of the man made rock parts. Bart
