  1. I just checked all the lime parts used in last years version and LBG, Black, Red, Orange, Lime and Dark Blue are the only options which have all the parts needed from what i can tell. Orange might be interesting, but otherwise im not seeing a colour which i would find interesting, especially as this trick would require buying the set, then buying more then half the parts again over bricklink in the correct colour. That said, clear backed stickers are good for speed champions imho, i got a second chiron as a present and swapped it to red/black rather then blue/black, im just not sure i'd bother with buying a second set for that reason, especially since i think the lime green is already pretty much the best colour to have an old school 911 turbo in. EDIT: on topic of the Forza horizon barnfind, from what i understand there are four cars in the game, this years mini, F40, the Senna and the barnfind, which at the moment isnt unlockable because "the instructions havent been found yet" in the game, which to me screams that it is the 911 turbo in white, which will be unlocked in the game when the set itself is officially released/announced. I dont have FH4, but if i paid $20 for an expansion like this, i'd be disappointed if it only had four cars in it, given the amount of real life SC cars they can draw from.
  2. Agreed, AFAIK the width and height of the car are bang on 1:10 though, as are the wheels, so changing the width (which would make the length more correct) would mean it needs to be a bit higher and have slightly bigger wheels, and you end up somewhere around 1:9 scale or something. Still debating if im going to get yellow cannopies to go for the 2017 GTE look, but that would also mean rebuilding the rear with the 2017 spec exhausts etc..
  3. I wound up taking a different approach to effermans front mod, my headlights are now placed half a stud inwards (which makes it look just a tiny bit more widebody), and the bottom two lights of each cluster sit a full block forward of the top (which sits back by one stud i guess) Downside is that the beam on which the light clusters are fixed is now no longer fixed to the side of the bodywork, so while that is no big deal for the clusters, the wheelarch/bumper is slightly more floppy, ill see if i can fix that tomorrow. I also need to beef up the red accents, as there is no red on the outside of the lights. The entire red/black "moustache" is entirely stock.
  4. That has a white splitter under the bumper though, not a black one.
  5. looking through bricklink, i cant find a set which would match those colours, all white arched speed champions either have black wheels, or dont have that piece for the splitter. Are you sure it isnt the 911 turbo?
  6. I finished the Chiron last night, having built it over the evenings of roughly two weeks, so i now feel somewhat confident in giving my opinion of this set Overall, im very happy with it, it was a very long build, over twice the partcount of any set ive previously built, and more dense then anything ive seen technic wise. The sheer heft and bulk of the thing still catches me off guard, while for instance 42000 is about as long, the Chiron absolutely dwarves it in presence. The rear half of the car feels like a near solid block of function and stucture, like i imagine the real car would be, densely packed. The build proces also feels varied, there is enough going on that you dont end up feeling like you are repeating on the left side what you've just done on the right (a problem i had with 42096) Criticisms then, many are off course already mentioned in various reviews, I personally think there are some technical issues with the set which shouldnt be there. The sagging suspension is an issue both front and rear. The rear returns to ~4 mms of ground clearance, the front to merely ~1mm, enough to not scrape along a flat surface, not nearly enough to be deemed functional in my opinion. This is despite me using frictionless pins in both front and rear suspension where possible to enable easier rebound. Same goes for the rear spoiler, the mechanism feels heavy and i dont really get a good feel of what the normal range of motion should be when operating it with the key. The model also to me seems like it is too heavy and complex for what it looks like and does, after the "mariage" step, which feels rather forced, there is noticable sag in the middle of the resulting structure. Other design misses to me are the fact that both rubber bands are hidden deeply in the structure, meaning you would need to do a partial rebuild to replace one if it snaps, and the fact that the cut-off point after a bag/box in some cases leaves pannels hanging in mid-air. I personally used the bag/box boundaries as breaks, and this means i have an intermediate product sitting for a day which has wheel arches supported on only one side, while two simple beams would resolve that. Overall, i remember being somewhat sceptical of the two quotes at the beginning of book one, "only the best is good enough -- lego" and "when it is comparable, it is not longer a bugatti -- etore bugatti". To me, this set was indeed not comparable to anything before, although i might have felt differently had i built 42056 or 42082 for instance, so in that respect, this set does indeed hit the bugatti mark for me. The "only the best is good enough" though... i feel like lego hasnt lived up to that for a long time. This set has so many small problems and design flaws/inefficiencies it is hard to believe this is anywhere near the best that is possible given the possibilities at the hands of TLC. This set even has a number of completely new parts designed for it, yet fails basic things like working suspension. To dull the criticisms a bit, i am still very pleased with the set, i had a lot of fun building it, and it looks great on the shelf, but i will absolutely do a rebuild using the "pimp your bugatti" project to fix all those small problems that shouldnt be there.
  7. Looks good, the flextubes evoke a good suggestion of the diveplanes on the car.
  8. Not quite, the ferrari garage car was the 488GTE, not the GT3, both had different liveries and different builds
  9. official catalog is out, with this set in it, so any possibility of a fake leak is out of the window. Judging from that one picture, there might be a small difference in the structure below the front bumper, otherwise it looks 100% identical (besides the colour obviously)
  10. regarding the wheels, i did the math (looked up tire specs on the real RSR) and for a 1:10 model, the tires are only off by a single mm, so the size is pretty much ideal for the lego set, the problem lies more in the wheel arches and the fact that the proportions of the car itself are a bit off. Also, i think the ground clearance and suspension travel are a bit too much, but cant really be helped if you want something playable in lego scale. @Kaydash i like the use of the red wheels on your car, certainly makes them a bit more flashy! I will get around to "fixing" 42096 at some point, but ive got to finish the Chiron first, and rebuild 8880
  11. Well, that is odd and unexpected... Im guessing the FH4 expansion would be reason to delay a set, but a simple recolour of an older car? Even though i really enjoyed the 911 set (both the Turbo and RSR), if this doesnt bring anything new to the table compared to the old Turbo, i might skip it, there is little point in building the same thing twice, especially if the second time is in a less interesting colour. Also, if the FH4 expansion is indeed the tie-in, then why is this set launching at the end of july/early august? The FH4 expansion drops this week.. and the 720s proved that lego has the capabilities in place to launch a single set completely out of sync with regular waves. If this 911 recolour is indeed something special for the FH4 expansion, it would have been launched this month. And besides, ill admit im not 100% on FH4, but that game seems much more current supercar focussed, so a 911 Turbo from the 70s seems like a poor fit to begin with, and even more so as a special tie-in, given that the Senna is given such a huuuuuge place in the announcement video. If they were doing an FH4 tie-in, i'd much more expect it to be something new and flashy, and be the "poster car" for the game. This 911 makes much more sense coupled with something from porsche themselves, maybe a 911 turbo heritage program, where they modernize and restore those old turbos?
  12. I thought the commonly accepted explanation for that was 42070 originally being numbered 42067, and getting renumbered, for whatever reason. Whenever i see some number reference on a set, its always a reference to the set itself, not some other in the same theme (one might argue that in technic, set relations arent really a thing, however in city and other system scale things, themes are much more coherent, and as such could do that kind of reference, but they dont)
  13. Im quite drawn to the blue car, and the red car on the b-model also looks decent (given the small pics), so i might end up picking up this set, even if i dont care for the transporter, just to build those two cars, and dump the rest in the parts bin, i might even pick up 42093 to get a full range of small scale cars, just have to figure out how to make something decent out of it. (as in, at least looking OK, and maybe give it a proper fake engine and steering)
  14. That off-roader looks awesome, spot-on colour and stickers for the cab! Im not a huge fan of all the electronics though, im not huge on building my own RC cars, and having bought some PF stuff a few years back, im still kinda sour that it got replaced already
  15. neither set really interests me enough to warrant a purchase, but im intrigued by the car on the transporter set, the first thing that crussed my mind when i saw it was "nice camaro", while from the looks of it, it isnt even licensed. Lego should have sold this model as 42093, and leave that poor effort of a corvette as the side show for this transporter. Then again, maybe this transporter being in the same scale is an easy way to get rid of some unsold corvettes to fill up their transporter. On the plus side, we get the small wheel arch in both azure and red now, ill have to look into that scale of car, see if i can moc up something interesting
  16. A Ferrari range-topper with a twin-turbo v8, sounds like the second coming of the F40, which coincidentally, is in this year's lineup as well. If the new set is indeed a new Ferrari hypercar ill be running to the shop to get one, if it is a new corvette... ill probably end up getting one because i enjoy building SC sets, but i dont really care for corvettes
  17. @samuelYsc cool work, im digging the LibertyWalk stickers and overal look, nice and over the top @SNIPE Thanks, the mudguard is the big limiting factor i guess. As for your white recolour, those white 911 RSR mudguards are smaller, so probably wont fit over the GT3RS or Chiron wheels while still retaining steering and suspension travel.
  18. Hi guys, quick question, is it possible to colour swap the chiron with official parts? Im seriously debating picking up the set, but im not entirely sold on the colour scheme (and some of the functions, but those are fixable), The wheel arches are probably the limiting factor, but im not sure if all other required parts are available. From what i can find the wheel arche is available only in orange, dark blue, medium azure and purple though :(
  19. Cool MOC, it very much reminds me of a McLaren F1, the roofscoop, headlights, taillights and general profile are pretty much spot on
  20. Lego designs by their very nature are "open source", as in you can not distribute them without giving away the design in all its detail, and anyone remotely familiar with the platform can reproduce your design. This is Lego's strength, and is a big part of what drives the community. On the other hand, especially now that the patents have expired, this is also a great weakness. Both for lego and for MOC designers. From a practical point of view, there is no real way to fight this, unless you are a big company with huge amounts of money to send lawyers after the copycats, they will always win the battle, It took Lego yeeeeaars to get lepin shut down, there is no way some private person is going to be able to succesfully protect their copyright across the world in all sorts of countries with all sorts of laws etc.. If you treat MOC design as a business, the only real way to protect your efforts would be to only do exclusive commisions, and even the reverse engineering based on pictures will be a risk, it is just the nature of lego. Otherwise, just sell your instructions, be happy with the few bucks you make of AFOLs who are willing to pay, and ignore the copycats, the people buying the copycat stuff would have never bought your stuff anyway, so despite that someone is making money from your work, they arent actually depriving you of any income
  21. I just finished building it (took about five hours, spread out over as many evenings), so i figured i'd give my impressions The good: I very much like the body work, it looks like a proper 911 RSR, building the structure/body after the chassis/axles were done was a nice experience as well. On the shelf, it is an absolutely impressive car as well, suddenly 42000 likes very small and thin. I also really like the details such as the antennas, ventilation tube, windscreen wiper etc.. The bad: I dislike the lack of features, i know a racing car only has so many things it does, but simple things like a moving windscreen wiper (maybe linked to the driveline with a clutch for turning the wiper on/off?), or more ambitiously a jack system would have made for a more interesting technic set. Furthermore im not thrilled with the ride height, it looks almost like an offroad car, dropping it a bit would make it much nicer. My only gripe with the body is the headlights, but those should be fixed easily The ugly: lack of features aside, there are quite a lot of flaws with this set, the suspension is extremely wobly, the steering is laughably bad, there is so much slack in the system you can rotate the wheel more then a quarter turn before the front wheels respond, that is, if you can reach the steering wheel at all. Furthermore i found the instructions sub-par, i found at least two instances of parts disappearing and reappearing between steps, or showing up before you add them. Also, when adding a rear wheel arch, it shows you a front wheel arch in the required parts section. There are also some steps where the perspective of the picture makes it very hard to see where you need to connect a module to the build. That together with the lack of numbered bags kind of make the build a bit more annoying then it should be. Overall: this set does what i wanted it too, be a cut-price porsche for display purposes, the way i see it, i got 80% of the GT3RS for 40% of the price. If you want something that is a real technic supercar though, stay away, save up for the Chiron, or dust off 8880
  22. @Cardboy regarding the adjustable suspension, if you make the front/back independent, you can give the car a "speedhump mode", like modern lamborghinis, where you push a button and it raises the front end so you can make it over a speedhump without scraping your front bumper.
  23. Indeed, it has a 12 tooth gear on the crankshaft, which meshes with a 20 tooth gear, which drives the differential. There are more gears in the steering linkage. Built for another hour last night, put in the engine, finished the rear suspension, steering and the seat, along with some structure buildup. By now ive got all the functions (save for opening doors), and could pop the wheels on and go for a "drive" so to speak. The rest will all be body work/structure, which TBH i dont really mind right now, real cars are loads of structure and relatively little actual oily bits, so to speak. What i do mind, is the laughably bad steering linkage. Putting the final gear in the sequence while trying to keep the rack and wheel aligned is fiddly, the rack isnt properly held down in place, and the extra gears add a lot of backlash to an already loose feeling mechanism (due to play in the front suspension and steering tie rods), the gearing ratio between wheel and rack might make for an interesting look (move the wheels side to side and the steering wheel moves very quickly), but i think playability wise it is a poor decision, then again, so is not having a HoG control. I did very much enjoy building a bit more though, and i can look past the inaccuracies compared to the real car for now (allthough the autistic car-nut in me wants a real boxer engine and proper macpherson struts), i can even forgive the fact that they just re-use the same old axle designs for a third (or more? Dont know if the 42039/42077 front axle has been used in more sets), time, but the fact that in this incarnation, they actively made those axles somehow worse kind of annoys me, steering was a solved problem in lego technic, cars like 8880 even fit 4 wheel steering into a small package then todays sets, and with better and more solid mechanisms then we get today. Ill try to not hijack this thread with a live-blog of my snails-pace build of this set, and i realize im rather schyzophrenic about the set (i like building a car, i hate the technical details/design), i hope you guys dont mind :P
  24. After nearly an hour of building, i feel conflicted about the purchase i must admit, building the same old axles ive done before in 42039 and 42077 (yet worse, considering the rear suspension arms being pairs of half width liftarms, giving much more play), and realizing all ive got left in terms of functions is the fake engine... That is what got me to buy it TBH, im a big WEC/racing fan, and 42056 was just a bit too expensive for my tastes. I know this lacks the gearbox, but considering it is half the price, ties in with endurance racing and will be a showpiece anyway, i felt that looking past the empty interior was warranted. It should look pretty good on display next to 42039 and 42000
  25. started building mine this evening, and i feel like Lego is being a bit sadistic here, we have plenty of small sets these days with numbered bags, yet here i have the biggest set ive ever built (i dont think ive ever gotten close to 1500 pieces), and its a case of "throw it all on the table and figure it out", with 90% of parts being either black or white as well... takes a lot of searching. Also, i knew the axle design on this is the same as 42039 and 42077 beforehand, but i still cant help being a tiny bit disappointed. This thing better look awesome by the time ive finished it :P
