42096 Porsche 911 RSR
Vectormatic replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Im willing to bet that in the terms and conditions of that contest, you pretty much signed over any claim to ownership of your design to TLC just by entering, so even if they looked at your design and went "huh, thats cool, lets just use that", there was no stealing involved. Also, TLC designers dont work in a vacuum (and even then, two minds having the same idea independently is entirely possible), they are among us in the community, and will always pick up some details here and there. And besides, half the theme we slag off TLC for making some poor designs and how the AFOLs design stuff better, but when they actually look at those designs and incorporate that, it is bad as well? If you want full credit for your designs, go the Jeroen Ottens route and do commision work on a one off basis, and never release detailed fotos or instructions. As for the lights, i actually think lego kinda screwed that up, those canopies are waay too bulbous for proper porsche headlights -
42096 Porsche 911 RSR
Vectormatic replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Im absolutely loving this set yes, it has less features then your typical $150 set, yes it has some rather questionable details here and there, but RACECAR. Im a big fan of the GT3/GTE cars in the speed champions line, getting one of those blown up to proper display model scale is epic. And i wouldnt mind if TLC makes more of these, id love a Ferrari 488GTE and other track heroes. -
Man, that corvette is a mess... I can somewhat appreciate the mini-v8, since a normal fake engine wont work in that scale, but it also looks less impressive. Styling wise... as others have said, the corvette isnt as iconic as a ferrari or 911, so the recognizability just isnt there, its not a vette, its a generic supercar-ish thing, which due to the bulky design says more camaro then corvette to me. The colour absolutely isnt helping though, in supercar land orange is Lambo, Mclaren or GT3RS. It also seems to be missing a HoG, so im really wondering where the playability is The mini wheel arches are nice though, i can totally see someone making a mini-42056 as a C-model. The cherry picker will be a nice small kit for my kid, , but the laziness from TLG there is just insane, i mean how much design effort really goes into those small $10 sets? Surely one of the designers could have taken this on as a side-gig next to the bigger sets right? EDIT: Also, WTF is up with the corvettes spoiler? from the pics it looks like there is less gap between the boot and spoiler on the real thing then on the scale model...

taken from the description: " Porsche 911 RSR measures over 5” (13cm) high, 19” (50cm) long and 7” (20cm) wide. " 25 pinholes is bang on 20cm, so that checks out For reference, the size is about the same as 42039 (which came in at 48x21) Given that a real 911 of the current gen is roughly 450x180 that makes this scale 1:9

The 911 is the only model porsche makes worthy of a big technic set though (unless they dive into the historical lineup, the 918/919 are gone), the cayman is never allowed the limelight, and a macan/cayenne/panamera would be laughable. im totally gushing over this thing, but i think there is more then enough to distinguish this from 42056, even if they are both some form of 911. Look at it this way, this is the first licensed technic racecar in over a decade, or ever, if you dont count the F1s, the fact that it happens to be a 911 doesnt matter, there is finally a cool display piece for die hard racing fans (for which the GT3 RS just missed the mark imho, that car is a rich guys toy, not a proper racecar)

Gotcha, apparently i didnt pay enough attention this year :P Either way, i think yellow headlights would "pop" a bit more, so i might go for that anyway, ill have to look at the aero changes and maybe mod the car back to 2017 spec. I disliked 42077 for its feature-lightness (bought it for a C-model anyway, ended up disliking that build, made the A-model and now im unsure what to do with it, as i still am not bowled over by it) I disliked 42056 for being feature-light, and just poorly working (that gearbox is shameful in a €300+ set) I dislike 42083 for being feature-light and inaccurate (that triple crankshaft... i just cant get past it) 42096 though, yes, it is as feature barren as 42077 (and the whole 180 degree V6 Vs true boxer thing still mildly annoys me), yes, the features are basically the same in this €150 set as in the €55 42037 BUT, it looks absolutely bad-megablocks, to me it is the coolest looking (stock) technic car since the Ferrari models, it has the engine in the right place, a ma-hoooosive difuser (which is the whole reason the engine got put in the middle rather then the back on this car), and it gets me my porsche display model at half price... Im also digging the cockpit details from what i can see, the air-hose on the dash is a pretty nice touch and makes it look proper GTE-racecar. I know this makes me look like a massive hypocrit, i smacktalk the GT3 and Chiron just about every chance i get for being all style and no substance, and this thing comes in at about the same substance/€, but im absolutely loving the package, and that is coming from a ferrari fan who normally doesnt care about porsches. To me, this is grown up Speed Champions, and Lego could do a car like this every year and i'd keep buying them (as long as i have shelf space)

Im totally loving the porsche! Turns out i was dead on the money a few months ago guessing that at this price a new 911 wouldnt have a gearbox though, and that still bums me out a bit, but once this hits the customary %20 amazon pricedrop, itll be mine. Those headlights though... comedy levels of bad, and they should absolutely be yellow as well (given that the RSR is a GTE class car, and those have yellow headlights to distinguish them from LMPs during nighttime racing) Yes, it basically is a dressed up 42077, which for its price was already light on features (essentially a dressed up 42037), but i totally feel like i made the right call skipping 42056 all those years, this is essentially the same thing for half price. The lack of gearbox is objectively a BAD thing, especially for this being a technic set, there are no two ways around that, but im pretty sure this thing will be modified by the community to fit one, and honestly, im loving that im getting a "full-size" GTE car, even if its a dog functions wise, and i would have prefered a ferrari, this is a much cooler showpiece for me then 42056, and at half price!

This could be the return of the old Racers theme (the old midi-scale ferraris and lambos), but this time with some technic substance rather then just system bricks for the correct form, a middle ground between speed champions and big technic supercars. One can only hope, if they do that, ill buy every one of them
-
Seeing the wheel arches on the corvette, im wondering if a midi-scale 42056 would be possible, suspension/engine should be doable (although engine might not fit behind the rear axle), but unless gearboxes have gotten a lot more magical with the orange wave catch, i dont think a 4-speed will fit. Still, that chevy will offer a very nice base for midi-scale supercar mocs

name and piece count give some hints though, given that licensed sets tend to be light on features for their price/piece count, im not expecting much from the upcoming porsche Personally im losing interest as well, been keeping busy with other hobbies, and seeing that what little info leaks so far, im not expecting much from lego, they seem to be headed in a direction i have little interest in. Off course i might change my position if the upcoming porsche turns out awesome, but im not holding my breath

Speed Champions 2019 - Rumours, Speculation and Discussion
Vectormatic replied to Anonknee Muss's topic in LEGO Town
Let me be the first to say "yuck", im not mclaren fan to begin with, and the Senna is quite hideous, to top it off this lego rendition really reminds me of a mid 00s secret agent pseudo scifi set... not a good thing imho.. Ah well, more room in the budget for other stuff i suppose.- 428 replies

Stating the obvious here, but Ferrari is FCA as well, even if they operate more autonomously then the other brands, so the FCA connection is already there.- 428 replies

It better be at a 50% higher price and 500 extra parts... 42077 was IMHO well below par in terms of features. The problem im seeing is that with 42077 and 42056 as references, there isnt much room between them in terms of features, basically just the gearbox (which in 42056 was just bad), so i dont see how a licensed set, half the price of 42056 could improve on 42077 except by having a gearbox... which, if done well, would make it eclipse 42056 at half the price, while still being a 911? Either way, as i said, it better be better then 42077, i expect nothing less, i just dont see how they can make a new 911, half the price of the old one, and not make 42056 look terrible in retrospect. I think it is a pretty safe bet, a reshell of 42077 at 50% markup would be disgracefull

Im partial to small and small/medium sets. I really like sets like 42007, 42036, 42048 and 42075, they make for nice display models with good detail and plenty of functions, a good build which doesnt get tedious, and are affordable. I feel the bigger the set, the more risk there is that you end up with an hour long fase in the build where you dont actually build anything interesting, just slogging through structure or bodywork (42077 is quite bad for this, 2/3rds of the build is just cosmetics). I havent tried anything bigger then ~1300 parts in recent times though, i find the price really puts me off, especially since i find flaws in most bigger sets. And while fixing/modding small sets feels rewarding, i just cant be bothered to fix 42077 (which imho should have AWD and/or a gearbox) or the even bigger things, not for that price anyway. Part of this might be me not being able to spend big sums of money on myself easily (its a mental thing) and being overly critical. As much as i like the idea of 42056, the end result just feels weak, and it needs too much fixing to be of proper lego quality, while something like 42075 works perfectly out of the box and had me modding it (not fixing, just making it a different thing) for hours, without feeling like i was making up for designer laziness

Guys can we keep the wishlists and such in the appropriate thread? Speculation based on leaks is fine but this is all baseless- 428 replies

Similar sized cars (42000, 42039 and 42077 all are 300-500 parts smaller) have all had big (as in, many cilinders) engines, so im expecting nothing short of a flat 6 if this is a porsche. Agreed, if it is licensed i dont see it having a gearbox, although the partcount would be there i suspect, i think the majority of that part count increase over say 42077 will go into aesthetics. a 4 speed 911 at 1500 parts / €150 would make 42056 look very bad, even if it is taken off the shelves before the new model hits, it would make people look at the bugatti and wonder if they will be able to pick up a similar but half price version in two years.

Im fully expecting it to be that car @akbalder, All licensed sets in technic so far have been current vehicles/devices. Which makes me wonder, that generation of RSR has the engine in front of the rear axle, with the gearbox behind (essentially flipping the drivetrain 180 degrees around the read driveshafts, to make room for a far more agressive rear difuser), making it technically the first mid-engined 911. I wonder if that rather significant change will be reflected in the actual model, since fitting the gearbox in the rear of a technic 911 will be quite a challenge. Should make for an interesting problem to fix for MODers though

This was my hope until we saw the possibility of a licensed set for 42096, if you take your basic 42077 feature set, add a gearbox and a porsche body, you suddenly have 42056, but at half the price... I dont see that happening, porsche will be involved so it needs to look properly like a 911, so no serious compromising on looks either. $50/€40 on the corvette pretty much rules out any suspension, just the V8, diff, steering and stylish body work will fill that up.
