Sorry, late reply! Thanks, guys! I tried to give it as many edges and angles as possible with a very limited amount of pieces. -

Aren't we just looking/craving for something to army build? Some consistent designs bearing the same insignias, but showing a variety of ranks or specialisations?- 991 replies

Ninjago was the first to have a TV show, and that theme took a major flight. Chima and Nexo Knights had one, but their financial success didn't last, presumably. Again, I think original themes with no media presence are being overruled by ones with established characters. I don't think you can call the TV shows a waste of money, it might even be the thing that keeps original themes viable at all. City, Creator and Friends don't need TV shows because they are real-life oriented; parents and other family members buy that stuff anyway because they can familiarize with it and it makes for a good, generic LEGO set. I think fantasy (sci-fi included) oriented themes tend to be the choice of the kid itself, thus need to be brought to its attention via media.- 991 replies

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
Exetrius replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
They associate it with Benny, of course! Is it in TLM even explicitly stated that Benny himself is a Classic Space spaceman? I'm not even sure. You can't be interested in something that never reaches your sphere of awareness. Also, let's not forget kids's reactions become more nuanced and thoughtful with age. A 9-year-old will definitely see that Benny, Lenny, Jenny and Kenny all have the same logo, and deduce that they must be in the same organization, while a 4-year-old might remark: LOOK AT ALL THOSE BENNYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. See my post above: https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/149502-the-future-of-lego-space-opinions-ideas-discussion/&do=findComment&comment=3060215 Off-topic but I don't think a Legoland spin-off is a good way (for adults) to plunge into a LEGO media IP. If you're serious about getting into, say: Star Wars, then you start with the original movies, not something like SW Rebels, right? That said, the Nexo Knights show never hooked me, imo Ninjago is better in any aspect and has grown into a respectable series that feels genuine (e.g. not just to sell toys).- 991 replies

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)

I'm sure kids will still play with unnamed characters, project their own stories on them, and perhaps make custom figures, just like the generations before them. However, I think kids are much more likely to choose characters they are already familiar with through media, over the ones that are 'blank' to them, so to say. It seems like a double edged sword to me: the characters get recognized (read: bought) at an earlier age, but also it will take longer before those characters are outgrown, while something of your own imagination comes off as 'silly' or 'childish' much quicker.- 991 replies

The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part 2019 Set Discussion
Exetrius replied to Fenghuang0296's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I'm feeling the same way about Benny and the yellow spaceman, but the set is only 10 euros (or less in some places). I imagine the pink and white one will go for 3 euros each, so for the 4 remaining euros I'd rather get a printed CS slope, two extra figs and some other parts, then pay shipping costs. Btw, you could substitute the yellow head for a robotic or fleshy one. As for the cat faces, you'll find the true human ones in CMFs Tiger Woman and Cat Costume Girl . -

I'm not sure what you mean by 'blank slate characters'. And 'desperately trying to appeal to kids' is kind of the point of marketing toys... So, what exactly would you like to see differently? A theme without a tv-show tie-in, meaning: named characters who are not fleshed out by means of voice acting and animation? Think of Rock Raiders, Alpha Team, Island Extreme Stunts, Power Miners, Galaxy Squad, Agents, Atlantis, etc., but mind that some, especially the earlier ones, had PC game tie-ins which had the same effect. Or would you wish to leave out names, backstories and distinguishability between characters alltogether?- 991 replies

Mine does too.

Thanks for your suggestion! I chose to shift the colour scheme towards blue because I envisioned a more military kind of Ice Planet association, and blue struck me as more menacing.

Thanks, sander! Thanks! Thanks a lot, blueshift! I worked hard to achieve both, I'm glad it came out the way it did! That means a lot to me! After all, mecha is not so easily appreciated by builders outside the genre then some other themes are. Thanks!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. For what it's worth, designer Nick Vas was intensively teasing the Dragon Dance in for the eyes of the LEGO community on Twitter (http://www.newelementary.com/2018/12/new-year-lego-elements.html#more). I am reading into it, and I know that account expresses his views and not those of the brand, but still: why the hype building if the majority (I assume) of his followers are not able to buy the set in their country?

Thanks! I'm curious how Benny's and his crew's part plays out in the movie.

I'm excited for the Oni battle pack, great army builder. I don't mind the identical faces, but the legs should have been either printed or black faun legs for the price they will probably sell for..

https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/169284-moc-m-tron-ice-planet-foxx-mobile-suits/ Like this, maybe? Completely missed the news about the City space theme, btw. Really excited to see that lunar base! In general, I'm hoping for ar least some greebles here and there, and maybe some metallized gold-wrapped instruments. What if.. they would go with the green Futuron spacemen? That one was introduced in a City set after all- 991 replies

Hi all! I've recently finished a pair of mechs. Normally I would post two threads, but these belong together. The idea was to make a versatile frame which could serve as basis for multiple different mobile suits, which would help save time with designing complicated body components such as the cockpit and articulated waist (more on that later). In the end, I'm a little skeptical if the cockpit is actually suitable for different add-ons beyond simple colour swaps. In any case, the design uses pretty common parts which are available in many different colours. For the moment, I'm satisfied with my M-tron and Ice Planet variations, but I wouldn't rule out more colour swaps in the future. Now without further ado, let's get to the pics: General Overview It's no secret that OXON III, which I made last year (see topic), was the go-to reference for these new mechs. I adopted its angular design language, and partially copied its lower arms, legs and hands. I was also aiming for the same size as OXON, but with a great reduction in weight, which I succeeded in. The Ice Planet FOXX was constructed first, although the differences between the two are minor. Functions & Features Not much to discover here, just an opening cockpit. Any mobile suit or mecha should suit a pilot in my opinion, so it's there. Interior detail is absent, though. No hidden canons in the shoulders that OXON had, either. Most of the assets are to be found in the other departments. Articulation This is where the the main innovations were made. First of all, there is front to back waist articulation. The upper torso can raise up, come down, lean a bit backward and lean quite a lot forward, over the hips. No side to side movement or twisting of the torso. I wanted to try to my hand at functional waist actuators. I couldn't figure out a cylinder-bar construction, which would allow for independent 'pushing and pulling' on the upper torso. Instead, mine are a fixed length, so I made the distance to the torso (in place of their individual length) variable. They are both connected to a block that slides up and down the crotch (is groin or pelvis a more correct term?). This is done with 1x4 bricks with inset and 1x2 'slider plates', but it doesn't add friction. There's a technic ball joint in the spine and together with two pairs of small ball joints in the actuators there is enough friction (most of the time) to keep the torso in the pose you want it to be in. In addition, I made a number of smaller improvements. In general, the limits of what the joints can bear are exceeded less easily due to reduced weight compared to OXON. The neck follows the 'floating head' design from X-RAY³ (topic here), rather than a more humaniod ball-socket connection. It has more points of articulation and is able to look up much further, which is useful when the torso is facing the ground. Furthermore, the shoulders are less restricted in their outward movement, and made more simplified the ankle stabilizers. Interaction Mechs are more fun together, I tested it for you! Thanks for looking! C&C appreciated!
