  1. Honestly I'm surprised we haven't already seen this subject. The setting is done well - the sail tent is a good idea and there are just enough details to be convincing for what would be a challenging environment. The fire pit and table look very nice. I have an ignorant question: where do the rats come from? Chima? Something else? It's a very good scene overall.
  2. Ooh! Ouch! Yikes! The scorched inn frame is excellent (if a fire-ravaged building can possibly be) and the textures in the chimney and other rocks are nice. I like the irregular base but for me the highlight is the black chest. It just looks perfect in that setting - burned, but not completely destroyed. The remains look brutal although I'm wondering how the hanging was accomplished with everything on fire - perhaps it happened after the blaze had subsided? I think it's safe to say they got their point across. I haven't even built my inn yet and other people are burning them down! Very good depiction of a sad subject.
  3. I agree with Captain Roger - an overview photo would improve the overall presentation tremendously. After very close examination I think I have the layout figured out. It's a pretty solid, playable build and definitely well-armed with those two cannons. The use of both red- and bluecoats is unique; many people will question this approach but I have no problem considering the early '90s catalogs clearly showed the outgoing Soldiers sold alongside the then-new Imperial Guards. Perhaps they're different divisions serving the same country. The build techniques are simple but effective and the canal is a nice play feature. Any prisoners will probably find their quarters a bit damp with the floor slightly below the water level outside! I like the round table in the back room and suspect the soldiers will spend a lot of time there. Hope they can beat those pirates. It's nothing fancy but it works. Keep on building!
  4. Slurpifier, B&P does have tricornes - but only in brown (they appear in the Brick Bounty and the Soldier's Fort, and if I remember correctly they cost $0.30 US). I assume you want them in black for soldiers; if that's the case Bricklink is probably your best option but it may cost quite a bit more (I got several hundred for $0.50 each plus shipping). Why the officers aren't wearing them (which would make them available on B&P) is beyond me. Likewise I don't understand the shako issue - obviously TLG is aware they're a hot item so one would think they'd produce enough to meet demand. Oh well. Such is life. Hope you can find what you're looking for!
  5. Nice little build. The cottage looks good, especially the roof, and the angle is more interesting than something square to the base. The base is pretty basic but looks nice with all the vegetation. I really like those trees; they're scaled well for the small setting. And I don't have an issue with the photography. It may not be perfect but it's still pretty good overall, and we've all seen far worse. Your explanation should quell those concerns. Good job!
  6. Magnificent! I can only echo the previous comments - the buildings are seamlessly integrated into the landscape and the varying terrain is wonderful. The colors, textures, shapes and details are all wonderful. One question: of the 80k pieces, about how many are vegetation - specifically the large and small tree leaf/limb elements? I'm curious because I've been amassing a sizable collection of my own and I wonder how far it will go. Again, this is splendid. It just looks so real. Excellent build!
  7. I needed a ladle to get through the alphabet soup title but the ship itself is very good. The hull indeed looks nice and the custom sails match perfectly. I'm not familiar with the actual ship (I haven't seen any of the POTC films) so it has me wondering if that's how she actually appeared; the lone lateen on the mizzenmast looks almost out of place behind the 4 square-rig sails on the mainmast. Still, she looks pretty good overall, and your added details (and firepower!) certainly improve the appearance. Nice build! I'm sure Cap'n Sparrow would approve.
  8. Funny! I'd like mine medium rare, bone-in, seasoned and seared, thanks. And none of that ketchup and mustard (or whatever she's carrying). Just a little salt and I'm good. Good idea for a counter - but now you've made me all hungry...
  9. The overall design is somewhat simple - but it looks very good. The rocks are nicely textured and the outpost looks good in those colors. The small cove, dock and steps are nice and the waves are beautiful, especialy when they hit the rocks. After seeing so many custom doors the standard door seems almost odd but I like them anyway. Very good build!
  10. I see I'm not the only one who has issues with the carriages. They look reasonable but indeed they are expensive... and fragile! For something that costs so much the clips for the barrel trunnions are just plain flimsy. The half-armament mentality at TLG is silly, even though it might save a couple dollars on bigger ships. Yes, I fully arm everything - but I find myself doing more custom guns and leaving the standard cannons on land. A really good custom doesn't cost that much (if you buy large quantities of the necessary pieces) and can be broken down for other things - without being fragile.
  11. As already stated, good job mirroring the original - from the build itself to the focus in the photos. It looks just as good except... I hate to see such a fine ship go down! Nice job anyway.
  12. The title of this topic is slightly misleading and I've been avoiding it for that reason. I've stated elsewhere that my favorite official ship is the first Imperial Flagship: she's very sleek, the decorated sails are lovely and she just looks fast and agile. But it's hard to overlook the BSB, SES, and 10210 IFS for their size, detail and larger sail plans. Anything is possible with custom hulls, but I'd like to see 24- or even 32-stud-wide prefabs - with accurate sloping at the waterline! I realize some people are happy with the 12s and "wide" 16s but some of us would gladly buy large, minifig-scale prefab hulls in wider sizes if they were available. No brick-built approach is perfect for creating the complex curves (especially the bow) but large prefabs would come close. I know I'm dreaming... so I guess I'll have to make my own!
  13. The ship looks nice lit up... and the governor getting his, uh, hat adjusted is funny. And I thought all he wanted was gold... Keep tinkering with it and you just might rival the old catalog photography.
  14. Another counter that looks so close to the original while still being different. The cart looks pretty good with the gold accents and the columns are nice. The flower petals add a splash of color and the facial expressions are great. The man stepping away with the breadbasket looks humorous. Good job.
  15. All the modules have been very good but this one is my favorite. As with the others it's nice and colorful and the tan especially looks good around the gardens. Building the guesthouse in grey provides a smooth contrast and the interior is wonderful. The cobblestone looks good again. The climbing plant and trellis look superb and the whole scene is inviting. Excellent series... but too bad it's all done!
  16. It seems you're rather experienced at terminating those pesky dragon knights. I like the tree and other vegetation and the base is nice. The knight's headgear is... interesting. You just might be the most violent builder at the moment...
  17. Nice setup! You've got all the factions represented, although the two bluecoats are slightly outnumbered. The ol' Barracuda makes a fine Imperial Flagship and the heavily modified trading post looks good beside it. I like how you included the jungle and cave (I forget what you called it) and the fight between the pirates and islanders is well-staged. The mighty Skull's Eye still looks good although I've yet to understand why TLG named it a schooner with all those square-rigged sails. The pirates on the raft are an ambitious lot to think they can take on those merchants! And of course the sparring swordfish are humorous. Looks like a fun arrangement!
  18. I got back into Lego with the 10210 IFS, bought used off ebay a few years ago for $367US (including shipping). That's just about exactly twice the actual new price for that model. I thought about getting another but the collectibility (based on its size and full-rigged sail plan, I suspect) has driven even used prices to ridiculous levels since I bought mine, which was in excellent condition. So how does this relate to the topic? Simple: limiting the market for large ships has allowed original buyers to really cash in on sales while forcing second buyers to really fork it over. TLG has to know there is vast sales potential for large ships among ship-starved customers, and less but still substantial interest in smaller, well-built trading vessels. I know the pirate faction comes first, then the imperials, but there's plenty of room for a merchant faction - even if it consisted of nothing more than a ship! TLG, whaddya think?
  19. The beatdown continues... Yepp, the posing is just about perfect. All those soldiers look like they're getting tangled up while she's busy opening up a can of WHOOP-ABS©®TM. It doesn't get much more violent than these two scenes you've done. You've really crammed the action into a small base. She's kinda cute too, but mostly because of that hairpiece.
  20. In my opinion anything that makes use of the printed slope-brick dresses is good. It appears the tower is a facade, but the overall design is still decent. The dense flowers look nice and the climbing plant is pretty good but it would look more realistic if it was attached at the ground. Is this part of a story? Nice little scene regardless.
  21. We agree on the concept of having a third ship for merchants, and while I wouldn't mind seeing similarly sized and priced ships for pirates and merchants, I would rather have larger warships for the imperials. I suspect TLG would feel the same way if it ever built a sizable trade ship: having 3 ships of about the same size and price would create sales competition within the brand, whereas different sizes would allow the company different price points for different customers. (Of course, there will always be knuckeheads like me who would buy them all regardless, but that's another story!) At this point I'd be happy to have a simple prefab merchantman, "wide" or narrow, and while I'm dreaming let's make it a barque or barquentine for variety. But this is the MOC forum... so I guess I'll have to build my own! First I have to finish my other project though...
  22. There's nothing wrong with the classic building techniques. Sure, textured walls look good... but they can be expensive too. If playability is more important to you than ultimate creativity, then use the simpler techniques. I know I would. Either way can look great and your castle is fine.
  23. That's a pretty good MOD - there's no question what it's based on. Too bad the original wasn't a little bigger though... Anyway, I for one prefer to see more trading vessels. This being the Pirates forum, warships hardly serve as suitable prey for the bucaneers among us. Time to crack the ol' knuckles and get busy...
  24. This expansion of the set idea looks very good. The setting is nice and inviting and the different plants and trees are good. I like all the activity and the number and variety of minifigs. This is a good companion to your castle. Nice job!
  25. This is a very nice, solid castle. It doesn't have much surface texture but that's fine. It looks like it was fun to build and should be fun to play with. I like all the details in the exposed back. It's definitely better than the standard sets! Keep it up.
