The tower is simply beautiful. I really like the grey cornerstones and the walls look massive. The arched, recessed windows are excellent and the stubborn door is nice. And of course the posing and irregular base are fine. Good work!

[GA: K9, DK v U] From Slavers to Slaves
Captain Dee replied to Blufiji's topic in Guilds of Historica
This is one of the best and most diverse dense-vegetation builds I've ever seen. The different trees and shrubs just look fantastic. The path looks superb as well even if the technique is unusual. Too bad the setting wasn't used for something more domestic... Excellent work! -
[G:C5, DK vs. U] Trapped ...
Captain Dee replied to Brick Man Studios's topic in Guilds of Historica
This forest floor scene looks great. The different plants and the collection of large leaf pieces over the hole are nice. The hole is rather convincing and the posing is appropriately chaotic. I especially like the feet and legs protruding from the top. Well done! -
[G:A12, HC vs DK] Rising against opression
Captain Dee replied to Bregir's topic in Guilds of Historica
This is a unique scene and beautifully done at that. The facade looks great in those colors and the arches, pillars and illuminated plate windows are superb. I don't really like the door though; it just doesn't seem to match the rest of the scene. Perhaps the crowd offered its free remodeling expertise just before the photo was taken... The angry mob is portrayed very well with all the different poses and tools. Hammer? Check. Tomahawk? Check. Pitchfork? Check. Pickaxe? Check. Torches? Check. Broom? Che- Broom?! Hahaha! Sweep 'em on out, boys!! Back on a serious note, I like the dried-up waterway out front; it adds a little gravity to the whole situation. And I must mention the tricorne hat. It's way out of its element but being my all-time favorite Lego hat I approve anyway. The CMF baseplate roof looks good too - I've done it that way but it looks even better if you conceal the studs under some plain black tiles. Very good work! -
The Will to be Free [GA – D13 - HC vs. DK]
Captain Dee replied to Adair's topic in Guilds of Historica
Lovely composition! The central wooden gatehouse structure looks good and the rock walls and towers are fantastic - from all angles. I like the shape and texture of the base. But too many colors?! Surely they jest. Numerous builders have been praised for making colorful bases using most of those same colors - with the difference being that they blended the colors together somewhat randomly rather than grouping them as shown here. Do that and this will be eye-popping. Oh, and before I forget - nice job with the story, too. You write very, very good and you obviously put about as much effort into it as the build itself. Everyone may not express appreciation but having two equally good components is especially noteworthy. Keep it up!- 31 replies

[CG: B12 DK vs. U] The Day the Music Died
Captain Dee replied to Captain Braunsfeld's topic in Guilds of Historica
This is an exceptionally good remake of the original - so much so that they appear to be different scenes in sequence. I won't repeat the superlatives I offered the original even though they also apply here. The setting is simply beautiful and the devotion to detail is incredible. Oh, regarding the cake - it was one of the first things I spotted due to the photos loading in an unusual order. Excellent work, Captain. The brickometer is at the redline!- 25 replies

The build techniques are very good. The tree and base really stand out, and what little can be seen of the crops looks nice. As for the subject matter - obviously it will be controversial to say the least and even offensive to some. I'm a white male in the south and it makes me uncomfortable - anyone with any knowledge of American history can tell at a glance what this portrays, with or without the accompanying text. I agree with the thought "...to educate, to illustrate, to depict, but also to denounce, to criticize, and not to forget..." I realize I took the last four words out of context, but the entire statement says so much and above all we shouldn't forget those things even if they are painful. Recognizing that some people (African-Americans primarily) may be offended, I would like to politely remind everyone that violent, murderous depictions of any type are offensive or distasteful to many people regardless of race. As long as the intention falls within the aforementioned quote I don't have too big a problem with it... but glorifying or sensationalizing the act should be avoided. The poem comes very close to that. Would I build this? No, absolutely not. But I caution against overreacting as long as the intention is reasonable. After all, the site guidelines warn new members that site content is for mature individuals. That says a lot. Few people are bold enough to depict the KKK. I suppose fewer still are bold enough to show multiple blacks swinging from a big tree. It's ugly, plain and simple. But our history is full of ugly moments and we shouldn't refuse to face it. To do so would be the ultimate expression of political correctness. So, to recap: it will be offensive to many people but a historically-correct depiction of this nature isn't automatically a poor choice of material. The Holocaust is hardly favorable to Jews... but most sensible people don't want to forget it either. The build is well done but the subject is truly a bit upsetting - which is exactly as it should be.

[WZ18] The Fall of Eastgate
Captain Dee replied to Captain Braunsfeld's topic in Guilds of Historica
Excellent work, Captain Braunsfeld! My first reaction was simply "Wow!" When someone does a microscale build I feel that he or she should compensate for the small scale by producing a larger layout and you definitely accomplished that. So often I find myself disappointed when glorious descriptions aren't realized in real bricks - but you nailed that one too. I spent some time studying all the different features: the main gates are wonderful, the various smaller buildings all look great, the bridge and coverging waters are nice, the ships and siege machines look lovely and of course the trees and other natural surroundings are fine. And the forced perspective accomplished by the aerial views is superb. I must confess that I prefer your Pirates-theme builds but in terms of overall creativity I think this is one of your best. Again, excellent work. You really illustrate the story well. P.S. I suppose the frog was added for humor?- 23 replies

The idea is quite nice - how thoughtful of you - and the scene looks pretty good. The building, base, flowers and children playing all look great. The tree looks odd - but this being a wartime build, let's just assume it was damaged (topped) in the fighting and has just regrown, like old trees in Kansas that have been ripped apart but not uprooted by tornadoes.

[WZ19: C4, HC] A good old clotheslining!
Captain Dee replied to mrcp6d's topic in Guilds of Historica
The entire scene is nicely done. The trees look great but the narrow path makes it more convincing. The posing is excellent and the hidden figures are good. And of course the basic concept is funny.- 13 replies

I saw this as a lurker and since it's back on top I'll post the comments I couldn't leave then. The windmill blades and roof design are pretty basic, but they certainly work. The rest is pure artistry. The textured tower walls are fantastic and the colored base is one of the best I've ever seen. The doors look suitably ramshackle although I must admit I've never liked the look of knives/daggers as hinges. Overall this is excellent!

The use of the Friends doll is funny in context. The tree trunk looks very basic but the leaf configuration looks excellent. The water might be the best part. It looks so deep and calm when built as part of the base like this. Nice work.

[WZ19:C4, Desert King] Spies and Spiders
Captain Dee replied to Jacob Nion's topic in Guilds of Historica
Wait - where have I seen this before? Oh, yeah, I remember - on the shelves of TRU... Seriously, this is a well-built scene. The tree, rocks, mushrooms and well-textured base create a very moody and mysterious setting within the context of the build. The spider looks great and the concept works even if it's not original. -
All the different figures on flying carpets will attract the most attention but I'm drawn mostly to the tower. The combination of tapered, square, recessed and round components sounds very strange - but it looks pretty good to my eyes. The accent colors are nice and gold always looks good atop a tan structure. Nice work.

Raiding the Towers [WZ18 E2 Desert King]
Captain Dee replied to Umbra-Manis's topic in Guilds of Historica
As the others have said, this is a good microscale build. Specifically, the towers and bridge are nicely done. I've never really liked the microfigures because of their simple design but still, they add substance to a scene that would otherwise be lacking. -
For such a small scene this illustrates the story very well. The spiky brown pieces look great as thorns - I just might use that technique sometime. I would like a little more vegetation on the right side at least but it's a nice setting anyway. Good work!
-
Excellent work! Both the dagger and rapier look incredibly realistic. I can imagine that they might be somewhat fragile... but they could be reasonably strong depending on how they're built. I've never really been a fan of large life-size creations (like pirate statues) but smaller items like this always look great. Nice job!

Which LEGO Pirate captain is your favorite?
Captain Dee replied to Captain Roger's topic in LEGO Pirates
I just gave 1989 Captain Roger/Redbeard his 100th vote - mostly because he was the first and most iconic, and also because he appeared in so many sets. But that's not to say I don't like the others. Brickbeard, the CMF captain and 2015 Redbeard all have very good torsos - better, dare I say, than the classic Redbeard (and they're very useful within colonial-era builds provided you swap the silly hooks in favor of two hands). I never really liked Ironhook but I freely admit that he certainly looks capable of being a captain. The other choices seem odd to me. The current junior's pirate is a captain? Really? I like the figure and the set he comes in but I can't accept him as a legitimate captain without official proof (and if proof exists I apologize in advance). Seriously, the poll clearly shows members' preferences and I think the classic Redbeard leads so convincingly for the reasons I mentioned. But obviously we don't all think alike and it's interesting to see how everyone else feels. As for the 2015 Redbeard, I view him as an older and better-dressed version of the original, except for the head, which looks cartoonish to me. Lawsless he may be, but the classic Redbeard is king of the Cabrickean Sea! -
Another excellent interior scene, vitreolum! The color scheme is uncommon but looks nice regardless and the patterns on the floor and wall look great. The furniture is the best part and looks like it would have been fun to make. Is this part of something bigger or a lone build? Good work!
-
I have the greatest appreciation for historically correct builds and this is simply splendid. The concept of making a single scene from three different paintings is unique and the designs and techniques of the buildings are all very good. The activity looks great as well (except for the silly trooper). I also like the fountain, but then I usually do. Excellent work!

Despite their simple rigging, these ships are fantastic. They capture the late medieval naval look perfectly. The colors look great as well and as always the presentation is first-rate. I prefer the Pirates theme but it's nice to see some large, well-built ships from different time periods. Excellent work!

6086-X Return to the Black Knight's Castle
Captain Dee replied to Dubbadgrim's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
This is an excellent remake of a classic set but it's also a pretty good design in its own right. The combination of colors is attention-grabbing and the smooth look is very good. I like the visible details and the base is fantastic, especially the rocks and water. Good work! -
Lovely port scene! It has a late medieval/early colonial feel to it and all the activity is wonderful. The main wall and merchant stalls look nice and I like that the back portion is detailed as well. The dock and pier look very good but I would like a little more detailing of the water. But that's a minor complaint and the overall setting is fine. Nice job creating a very unique-looking port.

All the minis are easily recognizable. I like the Lagoon Lock-Up and Eldorado the best. I'm sure they'd make a fun project to actually build. Doing any more?

[G:F1, U vs HC] Sneakin' Around the Corner...
Captain Dee replied to Garmadon's topic in Guilds of Historica
Good job with the microscale. The ship looks great and the rest of the scene is nice too. On a purely technical level the flags probably should be flying some other direction (square-rigged ships don't sail into the wind well) but I understand you want them visible for photography. Nice work overall.- 18 replies
