Thanks everyone. @TheLegoDr: Yeah, I didn't expect such a large amount of creations, it must be a popular theme. It was fun to build and follow and brainstorm elements before going to bed.

I made these for the Rebrick contest for the 10th anniversary of modular buildings. The task was an interior vignette up to 16x16 studs in size which would thematically fit in any of the modular buildings. I tried to refrain as much as possible from using many ready-made items and accessories. Hotel Lobby for the Cafe Corner Baby room for Pet Shop (the building, not the store, lol)

Is this from Captain Pugwash? I remember an episode with dodo birds there

The chances overall are slim on average for a project to reach support, but from the few that end up in the 10000 club, the majority are still not ideas material. There is this misconception that a really good moc makes a great set, yet it does not. I find that most projects, although great looking, aren't thought through with being an actual set. I can't quite put a finger on it and say "this is what's wrong", but I can see when a project is doomed no matter how much support it gains.

Certified store, figures, they are never as nice as the official stores. Surprised they even have cups, they are usually by weight.

Great work with all the separate motions at once.

Wow, which store is this so I never go there? No sand green in Europe so far.

LDD: Friend or Foe?
Sven F replied to VaderFan2187's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
It's a good tool for quick mocups without having to break out all your bricks, it saves me money by knowing exactly which pieces and how many i need to order for a particular moc. It offers a lot of elements which you might not have thought to use had you not seen them in the inventory. What I don't like about it is when it's used as a final medium, especially in contests. I take a lot of time sourcing strange elements and rare colors and consider it part of the challenge. Also there is no gravity in LDD so you could just suspend parts in the air while things have to be sturdy in real life to even stand up on their own. I get a feeling that digital creations, even when nicely rendered never get the same wow effect and credit as real bricks. It's a good tool as an alternative to a sketch pencil, but not a substitute to bricks in my opinion. The exception being Ideas where you might want to influence new part colors into production. -
I am down to mostly buying sets for parts now, but if i was to look at things objectively, I would give the Creator set "Vacation getaway" some kind of reward for best thought out set. Sure, the expert line gives us fancy techniques and parts and huge piece counts, it makes them easy to love, but making a set at a middle price range with very basic pieces so versatile and playable - that's a real challenge looking from a designers perspective. Some revolutionary new pieces for 2016 broadening both building and social boundaries.

How to recognize BrickLink color of a Lego element
Sven F replied to Lapidem's topic in General LEGO Discussion
If this is something you need to differentiate very often, i know a lot of bricklink sellers have a physical color chart with 2x4 bricks in (almost) every color. Otherwise it's just a learning process. It was overwhelming for me when i got out of my dark ages and two different naming standards didn't help. It helps if you eliminate all the old, irrelevant colors like the Scala shades. If you look at the peeron chart, almost half of those colors aren't used anymore. Most common mistakes are the new and old greys, old brown and reddish brown, old pink and bright pink. Pearl light grey gets confused with flat silver, and some of the ligher blue shades can get mixed up if don't have a reference. The rest you should be able to tell by eye. -
Cool build. The snow looks great. I know the movie quite well, but i had a very unorthodox childhood, slightly americanized. It's not a well known movie in these parts.

Hello. any frequent customers of LEGO Stores around Munich? Which of the two stores is better in terms of PaB wall size? and which would be faster to visit for someone just passing through the Autobahn? I stopped at Pasing arena before, but I find the town hard to navigate by car, hundreds of traffic lights and it takes a lot of my time to get back on the road. The PAB wall is quite small. Would the store in Riem Arcaden be any better? Thanks!

Great model. I especially like the tooth pieces for the lights. buon idea. It would be great if TLG gave us a 6x lower height windscreen some day.. while i'm still alive.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Sven F replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I am pretty sure that the "old style" the buildings have been following are only because older architectual styles lend themselves more to details which call for innovative building techniques. Any theme or age you apply to it is just your personal projection. I know you tend to knock down all your buidlings after a while in America, but most of what's been built in the last 100 years is fully in use today in most of Europe, including ordinary living spaces, not just town halls and museums. -
Fantastic attention to detail, color coordination, excellent new techniques and unconventional part usage.

Importance of quality when buying used pieces?
Sven F replied to Nathan734's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I used H2O2 a couple of times to whiten parts, but had them yellow again within less than a year just by being stored in a closed container. You might get mixed results depending on which era the bricks are from. They seem to have used varying degrees of fire retardand in the material throughout the years. I personally avoid buying used white and transparent pieces altogether unless i know the seller well. -
Importance of quality when buying used pieces?
Sven F replied to Nathan734's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Definitely don't sell any yellowed or scratched parts unless they are very rare with a disclaimer. Generally the standard of used bricks on Bricklink is from really good to perfect condition. I rarely get matte surfaced bricks in my orders and if I get one too many, I no longer buy anything there. You can give yellowed or faded bricks to charities or sell them in bulk. There are people who don't care about it, but it's just not worth the reputation of your shop. -
You could probably judge a good MOC by the amount of time you can spend observing a single picture of it and keep finding new interesting details. Normally this is seconds, but your stuff tends to delve into minutes territory.
-
Looks great. That's how a moc for ideas should be done, all to the last detail, no compromises in build or presentation. I understand that the color scheme doesn't permit this being built in bricks yet. I think people in general respond better to physical models which makes the quality of the render and presentation all the more important. Supported.

Very clean and smooth model as usual.

I think the large market potential you see is heavily influenced by our afol biased sorroundings. As much as i love and appreciate those models, I think green grocer and cafe corner would be major downgrades in regards to the broad intended audience modular buildings target today. The elements wouldn't be much of an issue, as most of the updated molds work even better (except the hinged skis). Lego sets have come a long way since 2007 and I think your best chance is to build it from loose parts and hope some of the rarer pieces are rereleased in another set.

I wouldn't buy any sets just to keep in a box, but if i would stumble upon some sets like that, i'd probably sell them to whoever finds value in misb items and buy myself something else that i can open. These girls would probably enjoy a newer set over this anyway.
-
Really great ideas and drawings. I think what is taken for granted here is that you are able to make up great characters from different themes, regardless which theme is your personal preference. You don't show any biases and all your ideas are feasable for TLG to theoretically produce which is a great accomplishment in itself.

Unless you have a friend in UK who can forward it, no. I was thinking of obtaining some super-cheap plane tickets and just going there myself. Sometimes you can get budget tickets for like 20, 30 € if your time is flexible. The largest LEGO store in the world is about to open in London. You would likely spend the difference in price anyway, but at least you had an adventure and can have a go at the pick-a-brick wall

This piece in black finally! yes, i've been needing that in black for a number of things. Good eye I think it would be useful to have one general thread to list, report and discuss new upcoming LEGO elements and recolors of existing pieces which have been spotted on official set images (not leaked) I tried doing it, but there are just so many now, I don't have time to crop and list them all. Maybe someone with more motivation and time on their hands.
