ME Models Rail Update - March 2016
Lego Dino 500 replied to Eric J. Olson's topic in LEGO Train Tech
When in the future do you plan on designing and releasing your own locomotives and cars? I saw the tabs on your site, and become pretty hyped. -
ASK HERE MOC-stuck? Ask for general building advice here!
Lego Dino 500 replied to mrklaw's topic in General LEGO Discussion
You can stick a flag post in the center of the brown 2x2 brick, and stick some 3x3 1/4 circle plates with clips in, that'll let you get the gradual curve. -
Ghostbusters (Reboot) 2016 sets rumors and discussion
Lego Dino 500 replied to just2good's topic in LEGO Licensed
I like the look of the new Ecto-1 and some of the new pieces, but I can't say that I like the movie and the license. SNL actors, a train wreck of a trailer, and a untasteful cash grab in the wake of the death of several of the original actors. Not to mention how tacky it was to visit terminal kids in a hospital for their promo. -
The best of the worst Lego Ideas
Lego Dino 500 replied to anothergol's topic in General LEGO Discussion
These are all pretty bad, but at least they aren't hogging up the Review queue. The worst one I've seen is this: Kenny Baker Limited Edition Full Size R2D2 This is ridiculous. He's expecting Lego to release a 16,000 piece set of R2D2, not even a popular vehicle or ship. It's 5 times as large as the largest Star Wars set ever released, the 10179 Millennium Falcon, would likely cost 6 times a much, and he somehow expects this to make it through review and be released, even if (and quote) "It's a limited edition set for $2000, enough Lego fans in the US would pay that much." So A, being licensed it won't make it, B, it's 20 times larger than the largest Lego Ideas set ever released, and C, he's spamming Lego Ideas with it. He's had over 15 updates in the past 3 months, each one of no substance. Just "Thank you for supporting me! If Artoo could do it, this can too! Hit the vote button!" He even has updates asking people to subscribe to his Youtube channel and Facebook page. I think they're both sides of the same coin. There are the ridiculously large expensive projects (Like R2D2 and Rivendell), and then there's the super low effort projects with minimal execution like the ones above. Lego really has to fix Ideas, it really has turned into a MOCPages/Brickset 0.5 Add some guidelines, like a min/max set size, a more rigorous submission system, no licensed sets, and a category system to make it easier to find builds. If they did these things, Lego Ideas would be a lot better. We don't need a dozen different Tumblers and generic car builds. -
Is that the one that got lost in a snowstorm in your parking lot, or am I remembering someone else? How'd the bricks hold up to that weather?

Same here. I love how complex and detailed all the new sets are and how well designed they are, but it just seems substance less. There's always the new themes like Nexo Knights or Chima that are a jazzed up remake of older themes, the same simplified remakes upon remakes of City sets, and the constant flow of licensed themes. It seems that Creator, Technic, and Constraction are the only categories constantly putting out well designed and innovative sets. But unfortunately, we aren't going to get more than a smidge of that effort put into a new Castle theme. But there is some hope. The new City park sets, airfield sets, and trains are showing there's been a bit of a callback to 80s and 90s nostalgia in their design, and hopefully that'll spread in time for the new Castle sets. I wouldn't be too optimistic about it, but even if it's 2012 quality it'll still be half decent. Crossing my fingers for Dragon Riders or 2009 fantasy though.

Boy Scout Gender: Male Print or torso: Kahki button up shirt with merit badges Headgear: Boy's hair piece, or dark green baseball cap Facial expression: happy and mischievous Legs: Dark green with pockets printed on them Accessory: burgundy colored backpack

It's a shame that station costs $90, the City sets are getting marked up beyond licensed sets at this point. But the airfield and airplane sets look awesome. It almost seems like a callback to the 90s and 80s with that plane design, it might be worth it to stock up on several to populate an airport.

Tiny MOC Collection
Lego Dino 500 replied to JDL1967's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Something similar to this? At this scale, I'm afraid it's not possible to introduce a functional boom and hook. But it was relatively simple to introduce a rotation mechanism, though there wasn't enough room to use a hand crank piece. -

I wish I saw this before I started my own topic. But anyways, what about a micro-scale tower crane? -

In the wake of a new trend of microscale Technic MOCs, I thought I'd give it a shot myself. And technically everything is functional, you can attach a hook and rotate the girder like an actual crane. -
There were some diesel high speed trains, like the Flying Streak Zephyr. Or the Milwaukee Railroad observation cars, which had endings that used a large glass canopy for a rear window. It consisted of several different cars and a observation ending linked up to a loco with Jacob's bogies, and it'd be a refreshing take on the concept, they all look pretty boring nowadays.

Hopefully they'll scale it back a bit, the 4x4 curved slope boiler was huge on the Emerald Night. Maybe a 3X3 or 2x2 design out of cheese slopes, on a smaller engine like a 2-6-4. But no matter what it is, as long as it's black, greebly with boiler and engine details, and has some good Pullman coaches I'll buy it. And it wouldn't hurt if Lego made the cars sand blue and dark red.

This is turning out really good! I can't wait to see how you build the loco. Are you going to do a observation car ending, or a second loco?

I really hope that it's a licensed Polar Express set, that'd be beautiful to have running around a tree or layout. But I'm not 100% since Lionel is still producing Polar Express trains, but Lego being a building toy may skirt that contract like with Star Wars. And hopefully with more than one car, that made the Emerald Night a nightmare trying to assemble a full train. I put together a couple of cars in LDD for it, and it'd come out to around 1500 pieces for a loco, two passenger cars, and a observation car ending. And if it isn't, a simple 2-6-0 like the Hogwarts express and some passenger cars would be cool. It'd also allow them more bricks for building too.

I'm not 100% into Disney Princess stuff, but this set sounds really appealing. I'd rather it be the Sleeping Beauty one, but ultimately the differences are as cosmetic as they are colloquial.

I'm not sure how likely it'd be to get Harry Potter sets from this, but I really hope they do. I missed out on all of the Harry Potter stuff, as that was when I was into technic and was going through a mini dark ages of sorts. Given Newt Scamander went to Hogwarts until his expulsion, I can definitely see a Hogwarts, Hogwarts Express, and a Diagon Alley set happening. But I'd want a full-blown Hogwarts, with the great hall, clocktower, grand staircase tower, Gryffindor tower, and the classrooms. Maybe $250-$400, a full blown accurate facade of Hogwarts. And I don't care about interiors for scene heavy areas too much, we can do that ourselves with spare brick. Like for Diagon Alley: Only 4-5 shops there are actually seen in movie. The rest of them are just storefronts meant to fill out the scene. They could easily do some 4 deep facades clipped together with technic bricks, and get a lot more build for the brick.

I'm almost feeling like it's a Half Life 3 dealio now. Every time we say "2017 Lego Trains", they push back the release dates another 2 weeks.

i may just be a 80s' apologist, but I love that era of Lego. Brick built buildings, a variety of different businesses and houses, and builds made using mostly common parts. I feel this same way about the trains as well. If Lego were to compromise on plane design, and maybe release some 4-6 wide planes built with modern bricks and tiles, that'd be the best of both worlds.

Ausini and Gaobole (GBL) trains (clone brands from China)
Lego Dino 500 replied to Hugo's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Where can you find this loco? I'm kinda curious about it, seems like it'd make a great Kragled display piece. -
My skills may be somewhat lacking in my MOC designs (Not even the 10% gets posted here, most of its just failures on failures) but I'd be willing to contribute articles and tutorials on scenery and layout design.

Congratulations Henrik! I'm excited, because it seems this is the most likely candidate to reach 10,000 at this point and it seems feasible. It's right around the correct price point, it's got a good amount of support, and it's reached staff picks. Fingers crossed for this one, it'd be awesome to see a 7740 tribute like this.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm tired of having all these small completed buildings. Something that has presence, like the classic castles in terms of height and width, and not necessarily depth and bulk. 2013 is a perfect example of this. There wasn't anything unique, or special to it's design. It was just a big square, with 4 lumps that could hardly constitute towers. Knight's Joust, and the early Harry Potter sets were examples of the opposite. The amount of detail, size, and effort that went into designing those was so much greater. I'd love to see something similar to Harry Potter, or that Dragger's Castle where they offer us the components like the towers, front gate & wall, and the main building separately.
-
This may seem ironic, but I found an idea for the perfect Lego castle in Megabloks. This set, Draigar's Keep seems to be an amazing design. Something like that with a couple of good towers, some landscaping, and a main building would be awesome. Maybe have 2-3 towers of varying sizes, a central building and gate, and a tall wizard's tower would be really cool. And provided it used BURPs and plates for the base, 1 wide bricks for the walls and such, have an open back like a dollhouse, something like that could easily be within larger castle territory around $100-$150.

Lego Pneumatic train build... [Dump blog thing]
Lego Dino 500 replied to Electricsteam's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Thanks Murdoch! I've been having trouble with brick linking stuff, and this proved extremely helpful. I'll keep this stashed away for when I choose to BL one of my MOCs, like my 7740 remake.
