Truck Trial rules?
miguev replied to gti180's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wow those rules (jorgeopesi) seem even more restrictive than the ones I remember from the Polish. Was there a competition with them? I'd like to see photos and videos, I enjoyed a lot the ones from Sariel :) -
Said and done. Thank you Master Sheepo for these instructions The build was very enjoyable and rich in learning experiencies for me, it showed me that I have a long way to go in terms of building with more axles and less pins, and that "solid enough" is better than "too solid". I had to adapt color scheme to the parts I have, which are basically lots of yellow, black and red, but nearly nothing in DBG. I had some trouble picking the car up from the bodywork, so I added a sturdy roll bar and now I can pick it up from it and even drop it on it You may notice I replaced the hard spring (yellow) shocks with custom shocks inspired in piterx's. This was an unnecessary complication, it was enough to just use the regular soft spring (LBG) shocks, without taking them apart. With these, the car can now stand with all 4 tires on the ground despite a gap of 2 wheels under one of them, or 1 in each of opposite wheels: Last photo shows a particularly bad camber angle because I made this mistake. I just realized now, fixed it while installing LBG shocks. Also replaced the AA battery box with a PP3 9V battery with MiniZip, which is 174 g. lighter. Even with the additional parts to keep the PP3 battery in place with the car inverted, it's so much lighter than LBG shocks have no problem holding it Now I can't wait for the SBrick app to work decently on Android, this car is too fast for the IR control, specially when trying to make it jump a ramp

Snowmobile (failed) project
miguev replied to miguev's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I started like that, with 2 tracks, to work on a bigger scale to understand the rear suspension, but once understood I scaled it down to avoid the weight problem. And I still think I have to scale it down even more in terms of weight, but I need to learn using more axles and less pins. To that end, I plan to spend the next months building from instructions and leave MOCs for now... will see if I can manage- 10 replies

Snowmobile (failed) project
miguev replied to miguev's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank you guys. I'm really not finishing it this winder, already took it apart, but I hope to get back to it some winter in the future. Hopefully SBrick Android app will be usable by then, I'm hoping that would help with the problem of "too much go pedal" which I agree plays a big role here. nerdsforprez, how hard should snow be for this scale snowmobile? Or, how much soft snow can a real one handle?- 10 replies

Hi all, I'm about to disappear for several months, but before I go I'd like to leave something here for your amusement... and hopefully get some advice It all started with , best one I've seen so far. I wanted to do something similar, preferrably with a softer rear suspension that would behave realistically on a bumpy ride (piterx setup seems stiff). Trouble was, I had no clue how these work. I had to like a gazillion times, to finally make sense out of photos and other models. In the end, I think I got a reasonable setup, using custom shocks also inspired by piterx Ford Fiesta. Now, for the fun part: I'm new to snow. I grew up in Tenerife, where you'd only ever see snow when it was old, unless snow caught you by surprise above 2,000 m. and then you'd be stuck there for days. No kidding, my dad used to work in the telescopes up there, when it snows there, you better not be there. And I never travelled much. So I'm utterly clueless about the different states / kinds of snow, let alone which ones are good or bad for what. I just took my protoype for a quick ride in the only moment I had a chance. The result is rather embarrasing, but I hope you find it amusing: I guess snow was too soft.. how should it be to ride a Lego snowmobile this size? And what weight would be reasonable for the model? Should I first build a snowgroomer and use it to prepare snow for the snowmobile? Some improvements I've been thinking of (but not sure they're good ideas): Longer, wider (4L) skies, specially at the front. Longer suspension arms (6-7L), to separate skies for better sidewise stability. Move weight to the rear, for better traction on the tracks. Center weight sidewise, this prototype was always leaning towards the right. Reduce weight, this prototype was already ~700 g. without any bodywork! Use outer output from Buggy motors, which is stronger. If you're curious about the targeted aesthetics, it'd be something like this: And if anyone knows the physics behind , I have an itching curiosity: how light should a snowmobile should be to be able to ride on water with the inner (fast) output of 2 buggy motors? (my guess is: lighter than the motors plus a PP3 9V battery)

Avast! I mean... Impressive! Specially seeing how fast she goes towards the end of the first minute in the action footage! Would you not want a 2nd crew member to handle the jib sheet for you, Captain?

For a moment, I was tempted to share a picture of how my favorite tool ended. Well, not one I used, but one of the same family... two were extracted with pliers, the other two with surgery, and the one thought of sharing didn't come out in one piece :D sheo's tool is my fav here though, very ingenious.

EV3 - Compatible WIFI Adapters?
miguev replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I haven't tried it yet, but I've read that the Edimax EW-7811UN (150Mbit/s) nano USB adapter works well with ev3dev.org I don't know if it works with LEGO's original EV3 firmware, but I have it so I can try it for you. So long as no Windows / Mac is required (I have none 0:) -
I plan to do that, with due credit of course, even if I end up modifying it. I noticed this video on YouTube months ago and already tried both RWD and AWD, together with the small rear setup and a buggy motor. Problems I found so far: 1. RWD can't steer, I guess due to the lack of differential 2. When going full speed backwards and the giving full throttle forward, the CV joints pop out of place. U joints resisted that, but the problem only really happened when forcing the RWD setup. 3. CV axles are too short and wheels eventually go away, I tried 4L axles with U joints and still had the same problem, so I think I'll uses 5.5L even though it will look ugly. Other than that, this is a wonderful suspension setup and I hope you (gsia17) are fine with others reusing it :) In any case, thank you so much for the inspiration you're giving us already!

The truck looks great but tires seem a tad too small, I wish TLG had introduced a new wheel with an intermediate size, between this one and Unimog's... -

Awesome Duplo! Loader, this is the machine every dad needs! :) I really like it, you got the arm and bucket movements really well, much better than the Volvo loader IMO.- 58 replies

Exceeds Expectations :) I haven't watched the video yet but just the first photos made me drop my jaw and let a happy WTF! come out in public :D -
8070 for me too. I spotted it discounted at my local supermarket nearly 4 years ago, when I had very recently become a father. It immediately brought me fond memories of 8865 which was my first Technic set ever when I was 7. Imagine what can 8865 make a 7-year-old feel, back in the 80s. Imagine feeling that again 25 years later :)

Thanks! I'm surprised there's no mention to it in this thread (yet), but I just came back to the forum after a couple of days out and noticed "hmm, there's something new in the Technic Hall of Fame, let's check that out... Thank you so much, you've made my day weekend -

How about just M motor with worm gear to a 24 tooth gear on the switch? Or maybe additional reduction?
