New build: A Kaliphlin Farm?!? -
Some years ago . . . When Mateus first tried to farm, things did not go well. It turns out, Kaliphlin sand is not particularly fertile, and nothing grew. After a lot of trial and error and blood and sweat and tears, he finally came up with a solution. By adding a mix of eastern Avalonian soil and chobo droppings imported from Muninn, Mateus finally managed to get crops to grow in the hostile Kaliphlin environment. (Thank you mccoyed for the droppings!) I like the organic build shape and the way the ground texturing and changes in elevation came out. I struggled with creating a visually pleasing base that worked with the shape, though. The pattern of 1x2 palisade bricks and 1x1 round bricks works best of the the options I tried, but . . . it just doesn't look as polished as I would like. Comments and constructive criticism are always welcome! I would like to claim the following UoP DoH credits: - General Building (Other Techniques): Forced Perspective (edit: withdrawn) - Agriculture and Zoology: Crop Farming - Anthropology: Life in Kaliphlin

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion

Oops. No, you didn't miss the Contemplative Gardens. After your initial request, I mentally figured out my " adding a sort of spiritual garden to the planning map, as a setting for temples, chapels, shrines, etc.," and named the area the Contemplative Gardens. We do have an inn (at least, there's one on the map) where your recruits would be most welcome. Ruadh would be pleased to have Stedor's addition to the Contemplative Gardens! Exactly! It seems like a really organic extension of the embassy Challenge, and it's awesome. -

The shop section is strictly devoted to commerce. That said, we'd be delighted to host whatever worship building you would like to build in another part of the settlement. I love the idea of, say, a priest's hermitage tucked into the Contemplative Gardens. Build what makes you happy. Thank you for your generous offer! While Ruadh is happy and humbled to host temporary troops from friends to ensure the protection of its residents until we establish our own defenses, a permanent formal garrison and/or training grounds aren't part of the long-term plans. The smallish boarding house I mentioned would be more of a stopping point for Aslanic recruits, between the outreaches of Historica and Aslanic training grounds. I continue to be astounded by the GoH interest in my humble settlement. Y'all are amazing. -
Earlier, I wanted to respond right away with how pleased I am to have your shop in Ruadh, but I also wanted to take the time to give you much more specific feedback. I'm so flattered you'd want to be a part of Ruadh, when as a build it's still in it's infancy! So, here's my tl:dr stream-of-thought response. Love the dome and spires; it's such a specifically Kaliphlin architecture. Yay gold! Characteristic of the region, and representative of both your city and the goods sold. The purple stripes are a nice touch. They work well with the build and the region, and are a great use of a hard-to-use color. I appreciate the reference to my initial build. Nice fortified wall, and I really like the sand that's been blown by the wind against the wall. Ruadh is most grateful for your loan of soldiers while we establish our own defenses (which may take some time, as buying bricks is a higher priority for me right now than buying minifig parts) The interiors of the shops are fantastic. You've accomplished exactly what I had envisioned for the shops -- cozy, small shops, full of goods and bustling with activity. I appreciate that you took the time to have a workspace as well as shop space. The mannequins displaying goods are such a nice touch! I love that you developed a character that ties together Ruadh and Mpya Stedor locations. I appreciate that you chose to build a shop with goods that fit with both the Ruadh artisan theme and established Mypa Stedor goods. Thank you for offering not only HSS: Craftsman: Heraldry, but also a Fortification: Wall! Again, thank you! You are awesome.

Nice! It looks so well-planned and defensible. edited to add: I really like the clearly Mediterranean vibe.

Nice build! I love all the grass, and it's interesting to see a "new construction" (not worn and decrepit) fort. Yay Kaliphlin!

Very nice! I enjoy the story, and am looking forward to what happens next! I really like the minifig posing, shape of the base, and the way you've used surrounding elements to frame the action of the build.- 22 replies

Thank you! Constrast is a great suggestion. I've learned a lot from everyone's constructive criticism -- I got too concerned about the function of the door, and overlooked the importance of visual definition of the door. Thank you! But no thank you for making my brick wish list even longer! Great color suggestions. Thank you; I agree, it's a bit too cramped for long-term lodging. As a short-term shelter, though, it does the job. Thank you all! It's so nice to be a part of such an encouraging community.

Looks great! We've been working on the "Leave it!" command with our 7-month-old pup. I can't tell you how pleased I was that he obeyed my frantic "Leave it!" the other day, after a LEGO went flying across the room and landed a few inches in front of his face! Ruadh is open to any faith, so long as they practice religious tolerance and do not prosthelytize. Mike, Bishop Jamon and the Aslanic Order are most welcome to build a temple. Shall I also plan for enough space for a small lodging structure behind the temple? Carson, I'm afraid I know very little about the Fivefold Faith, but so long as the Faith meets Ruadh's spiritual guidelines above, you would be very welcome. Please let me know if you have any specific requirements for the land. I'm considering adding a sort of spiritual garden to the planning map, as a setting for temples, chapels, shrines, etc. Suggested building size would be between 16x16 and 48x48, though that's just a suggestion, and wouldn't include any landscaping you might include. (Landscaping is encouraged! ) Would that work for what y'all would like to build? -
This is marvelous, Maxim! I'm so pleased to have your trading post in Ruadh, and the build is gorgeous! We are flattered to host your talented Miss Cleo, and we're humbled that you've deemed us worthy of your troops and talented wall-builders. Thank you for setting such a high standard in building and ornamentation! (Crap, now there is more pressure on me. )

So much to look at! I really enjoy the tentacles and the guy leaning out of the boat, and especially the high wave with water splashing out of the "frame".

Thank you for your compliments, and thank you for your suggestions for the door. It's interesting to see how many builders avoid door functionality altogether! That's an intriguing idea. Thank you! Wow, thank you for your kind words, and thank you for such marvelously specific feedback! I think your idea of skipping the stripes and using a lintel would have been an elegant solution, using cheeses or this piece to tie in to the shape of the roof.

I'd be delighted to have your trading posts in Ruadh! A general trading company is always practical. Our artists will need materials like metal ores, paints and dry pigments, and luxury cloth fit nicely with the artisan theme. I have a very rough map of the of what I've planned for the settlement, including this part with an area for artisan shops. I'm imagining the builds to be roughly the size of Kai's music store (it looks like the building itself is 16x16, but that's only a loose guideline, and doesn't include space around the shop). Let me know if you'd like to be in that area. If you want to do a larger build, I can put you off to the right, across the pathway. Would it be all right with y'all if I counted your trading posts for HSS requirements? edited to add: Ruadh is a dry, dusty place, with little natural vegetation. However, we do have fountains, and raised flower beds. Most of the buildings are from native stone. There is no distinct architectural style, as our residents come from across Historica and bring their own visions of Kaliphlinite architecture. They often incorporate details and materials from their homelands into their builds. Do what you want, and have fun! -
You're too kind! I'll take your advice and stick with the gray for a while, really fine-tune that setup, and thank you for your other suggestions -- lots to think about. Thank you, and thank you for those marvelous door examples! I'll definitely be trying them out. Thanks! I messed a bit with those little topiaries, but bigger/more green just didn't look right, in the desert, at that scale. Let's say they're newly planted and haven't had time to grow much yet. We'll be moving into a much larger house once the town is more settled. This one's just a place to live while we build up the town. As for the food, seriously, y'all, you're killing me! The farm is coming! One build at a time! Good idea. different color, or perhaps some sort of door frame. Thank you all!

While I, too, wouldn't mind seeing a bit more tan for a Kaliphlin build, the architecture overall captures the feel nicely. I agree with others that I'd like to see something more for ground texture -- variation in plate height? perhaps a tiled floor? A mix of tiles and studs to indicate a somewhat packed ground? I love the bustling feel of a busy market you've captured with the minifig posing, and of course the awning colors look lovely!- 31 replies

Thank you! Yes, the lighting is particularly rough on the interior scene. I have a few softboxes, so lighting for exterior shots of a build is just a matter of trial and error, but working out how to light an interior is a challenge. I half wonder if it would be easier to just build everything to open up on hinges! Thank you!

Some years ago, Siedna Ruadh, Historica's most acclaimed painter, decided to retire from active commissions and start an artist's commune with her husband, Mateus. After some discussion, they decided to settle outside of Petraea, just west of the city on the Oil Road. In addition to the glorious warm weather, Siedna and Mateus were attracted to the more permissive government and society of Kaliphlin, and the proximity to higher education in Petraea. By staying near to the capital city, they could avoid the problems with raiders and bandits found further into the wilderness. In short, it seemed an ideal location for the founding of an Atelier. Once Siedna and her husband had scouted the location for their new settlement, they began by building a modest homestead. It wasn't very big -- just enough space for a bed, dresser, and easel. It was cozy, though, and served as their home while they began to build the community they had envisioned. I welcome all constructive criticism! The door is abysmal; I need to study door construction for my next building. I'm also planning on trying a white backdrop for the next build -- the tan contrasts nicely with the gray, but I think it makes the pictures too dark overall. Edited to add: This build wouldn't qualify for HSS or UoP credit, but it is meant to roughly correspond with the AoM House: 1st Phase. Perhaps a bit fancy for a hut, but about the same scale!
