HSS Entertainers: Mme Celeste Delivers Bad News

Haha I wish I could say yes. It's a photo I took last night, but decided not to use, because I didn't like the angle the photo was taken. Thanks y'all! -
HSS Entertainers: Mme Celeste Delivers Bad News
SarahJoy replied to SarahJoy's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thank you, and good idea! Done! Thanks! Mme. Celeste is very nimble, and hops over the counter. The transparent blues and reds are colored glass. Mme. Celeste claims that the blue in the roof represents the celestial heavens, and helps her to channel her psychic powers, while the red in the wall helps to ground her energies. Thanks! -

New build: Mme. Celeste Delivers Bad News Y'all's suggestions to add vegetation and more colors improved the look of the build significantly. Part of me wishes I'd rebuilt the problem areas, but I'm over this build. The next build will provide another opportunity to work on studs-up rocks, so there's no point in agonizing over this one any more. I wish I could take y'all's suggestion to set it aside for a bit, and work on something else, but this represents the bulk of my tan bricks! Edit: Claiming UoP DoH credit for Architecture: Roofing and Architecture: Round Walls, for those that would like to vote on it. -
The line forms every morning, and Madame Celeste hops over the counter to her fortune-telling shop and reads fortunes in the cards. She reads for any who visit her. Some pay well, and some pay nothing. She says this way, she doesn't feel responsible when she has to deliver bad news. Mme Celeste: "First, we have the Sun card. This represents achievement and joy in your life" Harry: "Yes! I just got a promotion, and my lady friend agreed to marry me!" Mme Celeste: "And then. . .Uh oh. The Tower." Harry: "Is that bad?" Mme. Celeste: "It means your whole world is going to come crashing down, something really important to you will be destroyed." Harry: "Oh no!" ----- Mme Celeste was lucky to find this crescent-shaped rock formation just outside of the Ruadhi market. How she convinced the masons to carve out the space, and then construct the building, remains a mystery. Hell, we're not even sure her name's really Celeste. We kind of doubt it. I have mixed feelings about this build. I'm not really happy with the shape of the back of the build, but taking it apart without destroying the whole build proved difficult. Fortunately, great suggestions from the guild (yay Kaliphlin!) help to disguise the problem areas. I keep reminding myself that this was supposed to be a quick "fun" build, and that the next build will be another opportunity to work on studs-up rocks. I tried using a different camera, my old DSLR, for these. The color balance is better than my phone -- tan looks tan! Yay! -- but I'm really not in love with the noise, and I need to mess with some of the manual settings. I'd like to claim UoP credits for Architecture: Roofing (approved) and Architecture: Round Walls and Towers (denied).

HSS Agriculture: A Kaliphlin Farm?!? (UoP DoH)
SarahJoy replied to SarahJoy's topic in Guilds of Historica
Shocking, isn't it, that Ruadh wanted fertilizer to . . fertilize? We're a peaceful/lazy settlement, more interested in making art and drinking ale than war. Speaking of ale . . . Our trader can't help that one sergeant got lost in his cups, and took our barroom jokes about "organic" pigments a bit too seriously! His soldiers (with admirable constitutions for ale, by the way,) explained that the poor sergeant was still recovering from unusual illness.- 23 replies

If mere diaphanous tights can get that job done for Avalonians, well, good for you. Our objects in Kaliphlin are large enough that mere tights can't handle 'em. -
This is great! Quick question: Is there a hi-resolution or (preferably) vector-based logo file that we can work with? You may want to add another rule: Designers must have permission to use all the images they include in the banner. This includes permission from builders (and photographers, if separate), and permission to use any images you find on the web.

Ugh. Okay, here's the back side of the WIP build at present. I'm going to end up rebuilding it, because first drafts are never satisfactory. : Ignoring that fact that the WIP photos make it look like a big pile of dirty slush, you can see where I need to completely rebuild the bottom half or so of the rock structure, adding structural detail and breaking up those unnatural curves. The whole thing also needs some color variation. Blergh. Really don't want to rebuild this one, mostly because I'd like to move on to a new build and continue to establish Ruadh, but . . . this doesn't meet standards for either GoH or my own expectations. (Please PM any C&C, to keep this thread uncluttered.) Sorry, y'all. I'm really working to knock out some Ruadh builds as quickly as I can. Y'all have done such lovely guest builds in Ruadh; I'm trying to get enough native builds finished and posted that I can justify a Ruadh topic to bring it all together. -

I finished my latest build, Mme. Celeste's Fortune-Telling Booth. I'll try to get it photographed tonight. Here's a conceptual question for y'all more experienced builders: How often do you rebuild / how much do you rework a build, before you decide it's finished and ready to share (or you're finished with looking at it)? I'll usually rework a build about three times or so before I decide it's done, or at least, as done as I'm willing to do. Mme. Celeste's, though -- I'm still on the "first draft", and I'm over it. I didn't build it modular, so the whole thing would have to be rebuilt from scratch, and . . . Frankly, I'd rather tear it apart, and then start a fresh and different new build that addresses and corrects the issues I have with this one. Generally, how do y'all approach a similar situation? -
What a gorgeous temple! It's fabulous the way you've taken your now-iconic Aslanic architecture and played with how it might integrate in different environments. The bright whitewashed overall architecture, with Kaliphlin rusticated bricks on the lower level -- gorgeous. The way you utilized the curved gold bricks to reference the now-characteristic Aslanic wooden arches (boat hulls) is lovely. (Wooden beams have been imported to Ruadh by others, so it's not unheard of, but it tends to be expensive.) Bringing in the palm trees and the flowers in the raised planter beds was such a thoughtful way of building specifically in Ruadh. And of course I love the lion idol. I'm so pleased to have an Aslanic Temple in the Contemplative Gardens of Ruadh, and it's awesome how it's presence has opened such discourse on the history of the Order. I hope the Temple provides comfort to residents and visitors alike, and those who feel an Aslanic calling will speak with Brother Giotto. We're happy to have Brother Giotto in Ruadh. He paints such beautiful frescos of angels.

While a blacksmith or alchemy shop would be welcome in Ruadh, I'd need more than just a vignette (they're fine for establishing storylines, but they're not ideal for establishing settlements) and I'd need clear assurance beforehand that your build/storyline in Ruadh works with my own GoH goals/storyline. Maxim I (with his herald's shop), Robuko (with his vibrant gallery), and Mike S (with his Aslanic Temple) have done an excellent job of establishing a baseline for pre-planning and quality of guest builds in Ruadh. -
Interesting story, and I like the level of detail you included in your builds. I'd love to see the builds without the filters/frames -- for me, they distract from the build. The filters distort the colors of the bricks, and make everything look grainy. Edit: It might be interesting to see the photos in the storyline as you've presented them, with filters, and then show smaller (linked) versions at the end, without the filters, so we can better see the builds without distraction.

It looks very "Friend"ly! (Sorry, I know I should leave the puns to the Mitgardians, but I couldn't help it.) Nice job working with such a limited brick selection; I like the way you've done the horizontal color transitions. Ruadh is pleased to have Mme. Franck and her cheerful gallery!

This is just lovely! The roofline is awesome, and the chapel seems so well grounded in its environment, with the lush landscaping.

I was running into problems with flickr a few days ago. Eye-catching, distinctive, and possibly controversial? Hmmm. I think Ruadh is willing to take a chance on that! -

I dunno, I like the idea of a raised platform (one plate higher) just to help to define the overall space. Traditionally, the priest's area would be higher, to increase his visibility for the congregation. That idea would still hold true, even in a cozy family chapel. EIther way, it's a lovely build! -

The phases are part of Age of Mitgardia. I found GoH pretty randomly. I was using the google machine to find architecture set reviews, and ended up at EB. Started lurking in the city section, as I wanted to learn to build modular-type buildings. Then, I ended up visiting other parts of EB, checking out any section that seemed to be interested in building buildings. The community and the gorgeous builds of GoH, as well as specific programs designed to improve building skills like AoM and UoP, are what really attracted me. I spent a few weeks reading through the discussion pages and letting a storyline develop in my head before I finally got a sigfig put together and posted. -

HSS Agriculture: A Kaliphlin Farm?!? (UoP DoH)
SarahJoy replied to SarahJoy's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks, y'all! Thanks, Gideon, but with two "nopes", I think it best that I withdraw the claim. I may have achieved similar goals as forced perspective, but in doing so, unintentionally circumvented the building requirement of the credit. Not a big deal -- I'm here to learn, and UoP DoH is about demonstrating mastery. Thank you! Thanks. Mccoyed was kind enough to give me permission to use his chobos as a part of the story. As for watering, Ruadh is dotted with small springs, which provide for all our water needs. They're not pictured here, but are already part of my build schedule. Thanks, Kai! There are some really great examples in those builds! Lots of food for thought. Thanks Mike! I'm afraid I can't take much credit for the logical order -- working towards HSS recognition forces me to be more practical! Thank you!- 23 replies

HSS Agriculture: A Kaliphlin Farm?!? (UoP DoH)
SarahJoy replied to SarahJoy's topic in Guilds of Historica
That's an interesting point, and I appreciate the feedback. I suppose it's a matter of perspective, really. I was viewing the UoP credit as, "plausibly present a small-scale build as a much larger-scale expansive space," and if that's the case, I'd like to offer persuasive argument in favor of my build. If the UoP credit specifically involves creating an otherwise disproportionate build in order to create forced perspective, then I humbly withdraw my request for credit. So, here's why I submitted this build for Forced Perspective credit: I've used three standard methods of creating perspective in the first photo of this post: One Point Perspective: The rows of crops all taper in width, and would eventually converge on a single point, far off on the horizon. Scale: the same objects (reddish brown cheese slopes, and tan studs), circled here, get noticeably smaller in the distance Focus: Close objects are in sharp focus, while objects far away, near the horizon line, get blurrier. Ultimately, for me, it's a matter of effectiveness: does the photo effectively imply a far greater expanse of space than the actual build? AsI said, I most humbly yield to the judgement of Kaliphlin's far more experienced builders. Thank you!- 23 replies
