Great to see this project coming to life and that you are still working on it. What other functions are you planning?

Effe's MOC Corner
BusterHaus replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's one beautiful truck. The cab is gorgeous and the color scheme is perfect. Do you have space for feet on the front outriggers, or are they too close to the tire? -
[MOC] Walking Tank (Hexapod)
BusterHaus replied to Hugolin's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Pepinard I used the model provided by @bmaurice, it was for the walking chassis only. The body and cockpit were not part of it. They look extremely cool, but I was more interested in the walking mechanism and never went further.- 94 replies

Grum's Shed
BusterHaus replied to grum64's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Nice progress! For some reason I don't think the official box pictures of this model don't show its true size - it's only by following your build that I realize how big it is. -
Yes to all the questions about the claw arm project. Mindstorms is a toy version of an industrial programmable logic controller (PLC). The controller brick can be daisy-chained, accepts inputs and has outputs. Programming can be done through the official Mindstorms software, or through a variety of popular languages. The inputs take signals from sensors: color, distance, infrared, gyroscope/tilt - there are even third party sensors like cameras (for object tracking or recognition), heat/barometric pressure, force, etc. Outputs go to servo motors, of which there are two sizes. Since they are servo motors, position can be controlled and used as another input - for example, you can measure its change over time and determine if the claw arm has managed to move an object. The Mindstorms system is great because it allows simple projects, but can be scaled to really large, complex ones. You can check Arthur Sacek's creations on YouTube, or David Gilday's Mindcuber and Cubestormer 3 (Rubik's cube solvers). Like Lego bricks, Mindstorms has some limitations - one of the most notable is the low processing power in the controller brick, which can be circumvented by offloading heavy calculations to a computer (Sacek 360 milling machine) or cell phone (Cubestormer). However, most users will probably never need so much processing power, so it's not a huge issue.

@Jim I really enjoy Mindstorms creations and discussions, but I haven't built much with Mindstorms in the past couple of years, so I don't know if I can be considered an active builder. The EV3 set was the set that ended my dark ages, and initially I was a frequent visitor to the official Lego Mindstorms message board. I realized fairly quickly that I was much older than a typical poster. A lot of kids/young teenagers get into Mindstorms because of school or because they have parents who want to expose them to programming and robotics. You could tell their age by the content of the messages and their type of reactions. By opening an active Mindstorms board you may be attracting a crowd that's not quite a match for Eurobricks and its mostly 18+/AFOL policy. At the same time, I would love to see a replacement for the Lego Mindstorms board, where projects are shared and discussed in depth. I don't know if simply opening a message board will attract the type of content that you are looking for.

Beamless Chassis Design?
BusterHaus replied to SNIPE's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Connectors and beams need each other for strong and compact designs. You can build a strong design out of beams/frames/panels alone, but it won't be compact. You can also build a very compact design out of connectors and axles, but it won't be very strong. The magic lies in the ability to have beams connected (by connectors of course) in different orientations - this can be done with panels and frames, but is very bulky. -
You can get rid of one of the XL motors and place the BuWizz in its place. One XL motor with a BuWizz is more than enough to move a car this size. Also consider changing the angle of the steering links to something less aggressive. They should be more parallel to the front axle. The steering will become more responsive and stronger, preventing toe-out.

Grum's Shed
BusterHaus replied to grum64's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Very nice work Grum. It seems like there are often medical setbacks that try to stop you, yet you deal with them and continue building. Keep up the hard work. The crane truck and 8275 are models that I haven't built, so I'm looking forward to the next model. -
Technic 2019 Set Discussion
BusterHaus replied to dimaks13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The FORMA line got me wondering if panels could not be replaced by semi-rigid plastic sheets to form more intricate curves. You could model a ZR1 with a few of these and keep the part count low. It would also make for much lighter models. -
It is a scam, and even if they are taken offline, they still damage Sariel's reputation. @Sariel I would try to contact GoDaddy to have the domain name suspended on the basis of copyright infringement - the site is being used for IP theft. You can also try contacting the hosting provider (can't find find if it's also GoDaddy) and ask them to suspended service to this website. Most terms of service have a section that talks about using domain names/hosting for illegal purposes. I would also consider putting up an easily found statement on your website that talks about this topic. Victims of this scam may (wrongly) blame you through any number of mental gymnastics. You can be ahead of the game by explaining that your creations are used in scams that are out of your control. It will help you protect your reputation, which is quite well known here, but may not be to other AFOLS. Good luck.

You can "watermark" instructions without watermarks, but it's very labor intensive. It's akin to introducing typos in a written page, and everyone gets a different set of typos. In the case of Technic instructions, you can individualize them by changing the orientation of pin slots by 90 degrees in certain places of the instructions. The process would require an individual rendering of each instructions sold, as well as a separate database associating the file purchaser with the set of unique identifying rotations. If the purchaser shares the file it could be tracked to them. However, this idea is easily circumvented if the thief makes their own copy of the instructions, as mentioned by @LvdH.

[MOC] Renault FT-17
BusterHaus replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I was talking about the engine access doors, I should have been more precise. I watched that portion again and I think it's just the way that window shutter part is made that makes it loose, not the way its attached on the model.- 22 replies

[MOC] Renault FT-17
BusterHaus replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hah, you're getting quite fancy with the video effects! The presentation is very well done. Are the outtakes showing the fragility of this build, or are they just exaggerating it? The access doors seem to have a lot of slack, I'm guessing it's a function of the scale and not being able to attach parts at multiple points. It's still impressive that it can perform outdoors.- 22 replies

I started building something for this contest, but it's summer, so I ended up taking advantage of the weather and abandoned the build. I wonder if the season affected anyone else.

Excellent work, the boom is my favorite part, followed closely by the truck. Both are very eye-catching. The excavator has some great details too, like the bucket and the cabin. Do you think the track width conversion mechanism is possible at this scale?
-
Neat machine, it looks like you nailed the mechanical functions pretty well. The unfolding of the side mowers could be a bit smoother, but since Lego doesn't make a flow controls for its pneumatics, the alternative would be linear actuators. There's some nice details on the model but other areas look rough, it could benefit from some extra time being spent on looks.

[MOC] Tracked Loader
