  1. Voted! There are some fantastic entries! I suspect LEGO will rework whatever the wining entry is. Should a more parts intensive entry win, it will probably be heavily reworked. Good luck to all the entries!
  2. Really nice little moc! The steering is clever, and the way you replicated the color scheme is fantastic. Well done!
  3. I usually use bricklink for my part orders, unless I need pneumatic parts, in which case I usually order from LEGO education. I've also ordered from LEGO Direct, but usually only if the parts I'm looking for are new and the prices on Bricklink are inflated. I've also ordered a lot of panels through lugbulk. I'm all for a TechLUG! I don't know who is in charge of the LUGbulk program, but next time I see Kevin Hinkle at a show, I'll ask him about the possibility of a Technic LUGbulk program. I just read through the lugbulk program rules, and I can't find anything that specifically says there can't be a virtual LUG. However, it does say that the LUG need to display at least 2 times per year. I suppose that's open to interpretation, and maybe it counts if only one of us from the LUG displays at a meeting? I dunno. I would love to see Technic become more popular here in the states. Aside from the robotics and GBC stuff, it seems like there are only a handful of Technic builders that visit the shows here in the states. It seems that many of the people that visit shows don't really know what Technic is, and several times, I've heard people make comments about Technic not really being LEGO. Sometimes I get the feeling that even the event organizers don't understand Technic. The last few shows I've been to, I've had the impression like the Technic Mocs are being pushed to the back burner and kinda get the leftover display space. The exception to this was at BrickWorld, where I was the only person displaying anything Technic. The Technic section was me! Fortunately, my local LUG has some folks that build GBC and robotics stuff, so we always have some Technic stuff on the LUGbulk. Over the last couple years, I've managed to order 130 black, 50 grey, and 50 yellow 11x3 curved panels; as well as 50 black, 50 grey 5x11 panels, as well as some other Technic bits. I did miss out on the yellow and red 5x11 panels, but maybe I can get some yellow ones in the order next year.
  4. I'm going to try and make it again this year. Last year was a blast! Hopefully I'll have a moc done by then. Is EB doing a collaborative build again? I might try to get in on that this year.
  5. Looks great! What happened with your log truck? Did you complete that?
  6. Quad rotor sounds good. Have you tried using intermeshing rotors like this: Might be difficult to do with those wide blades though.
  7. Awesome! I like the tandem rotor idea much better than the original concept.
  8. I plan on buying the Technic F1 car, the Service Truck, the Mobile Crane MKII, and the Pet Shop. I would also like to start building some modular buildings. Additionally, I would like to build a few Technic mocs, and possibly submit something to Cuusoo. Also, I would like to redo my storage system with some better drawers. I'm not a fan of the drawers that I use. Work and money permitting, I would also like to attend Brickfair in Washington DC, BrickWorld in Chicago, BrickMagic in Raleigh, and BrickCon in Seattle. Another fun year with LEGO!
  9. It sounds to me like you have a problem with either the receiver or remote. I have a V1 receiver that does that sometimes. Do you have another receiver or remote you can try? I would contact LEGO customer service about your problems. They may be able to send you some replacement parts.
  10. Thanks for posting this, Paul. Is the steering angle with a CV installed any better than the old hubs? I would love it if LEGO offered a 5L link and 9L steering rack!
  11. You're right. The angle would be quite a lot, especially with the boom all the way up. Maybe there would be a solution with two u-joints, but that would take some re-engineering.
  12. The functions are a bit slow, but the motorized claw function looks really bad. I think a u-joint instead of the gears in the joint may solve the issue, although not 100% sure of that.
  13. Wow...I don't know how I missed this! Fantastic backhoe! I amazed at how many functions you were able to fit in the chassis. Really great creation! I love all the renderings as well. I wish I had those skills.
  14. That is a really nice alternate model. I especially like the LA used for steering.
  15. Woot! I just picked it up at my local LEGO store. $79.
  16. I like the new crane. I missed out on 8421, so I'm excited to see another great crane. This new crane appears to be even better than the old one. It's larger, has 5 axles, 3 section boom, more motorized functions, and the outriggers look pretty unique. If the box art is anything to go by, it appears like the crane would have a motorized gearbox with an H style shifter. It looks like the motorized functions include raising/lowering the boom, extending the boom, raising/lowering the hoist, and extending the outriggers (maybe by a drive shaft through the turntable?). The box art doesn't show any arrows to indicate a motorized slew function, so maybe the slew is operated by a crank or just by turning the superstructure by hand.I find the outriggers pretty interesting. I realize the box art is fuzzy, but it looks like the outriggers slide in/out, then have a separate section on the ends that drops down. It would be great to have the end sections drop down with a motor, but perhaps they have a crank to lower them, like 8258. Looks like a great set! I also like the service truck. The box art isn't too clear, and I can't figure out what kind of tow equipment the truck has. I think it could have a single boom with a winch like this: Or maybe a dual boom setup like this: My guess is that this truck has a boom and underlift similar to the first picture. Functions may include pneumatic underlift, pneumatic boom, and motorized stabilizers. The box art doesn't seem to indicate any motorized winch (but there is a winch line in the picture), but that seems like something that should be easy enough to incorporate. Just my observations from a fuzzy box image.
  17. 8258 is a fantastic set, and one of my favorites. My suggestion is if you can find it for a reasonable price, get it. 8110 is also a great set, but it's probably going to be available for another year.
  18. Ah, ok. I understand what you are saying. I never noticed this on 8258 or 9395 (which I don't have). That's something I would try to avoid on my own mocs, but I guess LEGO deems it acceptable. Anyways, I'll have to see if my local LEGO store has this set in stock. It's very nice.
  19. I like the design. I like how the weight of the motor is offset by the weight of the tail boom. I don't know how much that motor weighs, but the center of gravity appears to be pretty close to correct. I'm not sure the tail rotor would provide enough thrust to counteract the torque of the buggy motor. I'm still unsure if LEGO will ever achieve controlled flight, but I think your design is the best attempt I've seen to at least achieve powered flight.
  20. Yup, I understand that it is assembled with axles going through pin holes. What I'm referring to is the diagonal upper assembly (1x11 beam, 1x5 thin beams, and 1x3 beams). The connecting points for this diagonal assembly are at right angles to the horizontal lower section. The geometry doesn't really work, and the diagonal assembly is a fraction too short. I guess since it's only off by one hole it fits good enough. Not something I would expect from LEGO though. Not a complaint, just an interesting observation. Otherwise, a wonderful set with a nice price tag!
  21. I'm sure they will fix the issue soon, and I don't mind waiting a few weeks to see the instructions online. It's always nice to view the instructions to see how the sets are designed, but it isn't going to kill me to wait for the instructions. I've been very happy with the customer service at LEGO thus far, and this minor issue doesn't change my opinion about them. Having instructions a few days or weeks late is better than no instructions at all. A big thanks to LEGO for putting forth the effort to post the instructions online.
  22. I'm not seeing the entire building instructions for the A model. The pdf file has everything but the grapple section. The instructions for the B model is only showing the 1st page. Not a big deal, and I'm sure web team will get this corrected soon. I'm just glad they provide us with instructions to drool over! I really like the gearbox design. Placing the driving rings inline with each other is clever and simple. However, I'm not a fan of the boom design. The 1x13 beam on page 74 appears to be forced in place. I'm surprised this got past the design team. Otherwise, a great set, and I look forward to purchasing it. Love the gearbox. And, thanks to TLG for not including an expensive motor and battery box in the set!
  23. Thank you for the review! I'm looking forward to purchasing this. It appears that the short turning radius is due more to the use of the short steering rack than the hub piece itself. When used in mocs, it seems the new hub piece would allow quite a bit of turning radius, if used with a longer steering rack. I like the 3 mLA's, and the white color is really great!
