067 is 50 years ago, is this significant for anything or anyone? -

30 Day backorder, 8:30 am US Eastern Time , got an e-mail confirmation of shipping delay. Usually, though, the wait time is a lot less. -
Several years ago I picked up some VCR tapes (remember those) when on a trip to Moscow, for my kids. We couldn't understand the dialogue, but the animation and movement said everything you need to know - Great work capturing these characters. Too bad they never got widely distributed in the English speaking world. Cheburashka is our favorite, of course

LEGO makes a non-ABS prototype brick
JGW3000 replied to Master_Data's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Making plastic from a food source is just wrong. Making plastic or other chemicals from food or plant waste; however, is feasible, although manure gas, anaerobic or digester biogas, etc. is a better approach. Use of algae is extremely inefficient, as algae are slow growing, there is a need to maintain an invariant culture, and then there is the problem of separating oils from water and biological matter. Consider the tremendous volumes of chemicals produced worldwide - ten's of millions of metric tons annually. The issue is not availability of renewable or 'green' starting materials, the issue is the energy cost in transforming these starting materials, first into relatively pure and clean chemical intermediates, and then into something that looks like or is ABS plastic. (We are working on it, though - primarily using wind and solar power to convert CO2 and CH4 into chemical intermediates - both CO2 and CH4 are widely available from both fossil and renewable resources). It will just be a matter of R&D and time to get to the technology level where renewable-sourced materials are cost- and energy-competitive with their petroleum-sources equivalents. At the rate of progress, this can happen in as little as 5 years, but 20 or so is more likely.- 38 replies

Now we just need the launch gantry . Hoping for VIP early access, as this is going to sell out day 1. I need to get two, one for work and one for the kids. I am glad they made the horizontal display configuration, as this solves many problems related to little fingers and random cat movements knocking it over. Saabfan - thanks! -
LEGO makes a non-ABS prototype brick
JGW3000 replied to Master_Data's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Suppose if I wanted to, I could make the raw materials that go into ABS (styrene, butadiene, and acrylonitrile) out of a combination of ammonia, and methane from natural gas; or as a stretch goal, replace the methane with atmospheric CO2 and H2O with CO and H2 production via electrolysis, and synthesize the ammonia in a Haber type process. The energy penalty, however, would be much larger than that of making the same raw materials from petroleum. I suppose I could use CSP (concentrating solar power) or wind energy to provide energy for the process, but any process involving conversion of CO2 or H2O is intrinsically highly inefficient. I suspect that the cost of power from CSP will be much lower in 5-10 years than it is now, reducing the cost inefficiency at least, and with continuing advances in process and catalyst technology, there will be no need to replace ABS, as the starting materials could be sourced from renewables rather than petroleum. However, if TLG's goal is to make a degradable brick, that is a different story. Either way, having active customer support, in this case LEGO, driving the chemical industry towards totally green manufacturing is what is needed to effect change. Regardless of whether LEGO succeeds internally, they are such a big player in the ABS area that they can make a change to their suppliers and supply streams.- 38 replies

[MOC] Aliens M577 APC
JGW3000 replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
If only the original movie used hamsters, I'm sure the outcome would have been different. Great reproduction from a classic movie. Just curious, any issues with going from Technic beams, etc. to system parts on the outside? -
New graphics are in the air - share your feedback
JGW3000 replied to Bonaparte's topic in Forum Information and Help
At first glance, was glaringly pink on my smartphone, and I thought I stumbled into some sort of alt-Eurobricks site. But, I guess I'll get used to it, maybe by the time the summer graphics are posted. All the hard work by the staff is truly appreciated. -
Technic 2017 Set Discussion

Noticed on Technibricks that 'the next series of PF2 elements will be here in the second half of 2017" is posted in a discussion on WeDo2 and LDD - does this mean that 42070 will have PF2 after all??? Or something else is in the works? -
What, no electromagnet??? (just kidding). So many functions, you should get an award from S-Brick, seems very easy to control. Well done, and good video to boot!

Of course the Porsche fits in nicely with the Speed Champions theme -
Jeez Louise, just stick the "NASA" label on your project and its bound to get approved. Another boring minifig pack. At least there is still hope in the next review.

Pink Technic
JGW3000 replied to LucyCol's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The image is clearly a digital render, the parts are posed in violation of the laws of gravity . I am more surprised that Technic elements would be part of the free-build experience, as they require more effort and pre-planning for assembly than system bricks. However, one of the play areas, the "Red Zone" has a Creative Lab which has PF motors and other Technic elements, so there is hope. -

[REVIEW] 42065 Tracked Racer

I am assuming that an Sbrick will fit in just fine, has anyone tried controlling 42065 with Sbrick? -
This is one set I'd give my kid at let him modify it to his heart's content, and hope my other kid gets interested in it also. Will be looking forward to what they come up with. On the other hand, I don't let them modify the $200 or greater sets.

You sold me, LEGO should be giving you commissions on each sale as a result of your video reviews . By the way, why were those two people walking slowly away, backwards, around 9:20 into the video???

I've been around this building many times, and I am just not seeing it in your mini-build. On the other hand, not sure how to approach this at the scale you are working on - some profile bricks or grills may help? Good luck and keep us updated with your Philadelphia build. Are you going to do the Art Museum, Boat House Row, Independance Hall, or the "LOVE" sculpture?

Yes, but in black and MSG only, so it looks like I am not going to have a display as colorful as yours!
