LEGO Star Wars 2021 Set Discussion - READ FIRST POST!!!

The gunship continues to sound nice, though in David's video he says that Lego will not be making a minifigure-scale Republic Gunship for the next few years which is certainly disappointing. In addition, it sounds like Cody will not be included.

Well, that's frustrating. Does TLG ever listen to us fans?

I mean, they just did here considering the fans voted for a Gunship. At this point I'm convinced LEGO either has no interest in making a P2 Cody or they're saving him for a set they're not sure will sell well without him.

TLG:

Mandrproductions+fans: Gief 501st battle pack!!!!!!!!!!

TLG: OK. Here it is!

TLG: here's a vote! Choose a ucs set to be built!

Fans: republic gunship!

TLG: OK, we make it!

Fans: why yoo neva lissen too us!?1!

Joking aside, sure it'd be nice, but we will get what they give us. They'll do what they want for the most part, and it won't always please us....

What I mean is, they never listen to people (with the exception of the 2020 501st Battle Pack), unless they make the rules. With the gunship, it was clearly the best option to vote for, and TLG chose the options.

The problem is, what set would they put P2 Cody in? Clone Wars is over, and there won't be any more sets based on it. (Unless Bad Batch has Cody, which isn't likely.)

See, with the vote, they chose three options, likely knowing which one we would pick. I'd be willing to bet they were already working on the set before the vote even existed. Not only that, but they made a Nebulon-B Escort Frigate anyway! Albeit not UCS, but still...

And yes, they did provide us with another 501st Battle Pack. (Not that I don't have a few problems with that set.) I might be slightly crazy, but I'm not happy with LEGO Star Wars.

Yeah, I know, I'm ranting.

Yeah, I know, I'm ranting.

Sure they chose the options. But they likely had rough prototype designs for all 3.  Sure they might have had an idea, but they'd never have absolutely known.

If I'm honest, I'd have put nebulon b as the most likely candidate to win given the vocal majority here seem to be all about it for some reason; given it looks more like a weapon/scythe someone would hold and use to bash someone with than a spaceship and doesn't seem to me to have any semblance of thought to the design purpose of the shape other than a big bulk of engines on one end, a stick, and a large shelf stack on the other.

We know the pitfalls of the 501st pack, but we also know the true drive of it, and I can't blame TLG for milking it with larger than necessary builds to justify a higher price for 4 figs we all wanted. You're not crazy, you just have your own likes and dislikes is all :classic:

Yeah, you're right about all of this. I guess I can't really blame them for the size of the 501st vehicles, and designs for all three are likely. Now that I think about it, I hope they end up using those designs. :classic:

Anything, Lego has put Clones that don't fit in a scene in sets before like Wolfe in the Republic Frigate or Fox in the Spider Droid. Lego knows a P2 Cody (or any Clone Commander not named Gree) will sell almost any set off him alone, which makes the decision to not put him in that overpriced Starfighter last year weird.

Good point, and he definitely should have been in there. The decision to exclude poor Cody was a bad one, and I think they regret it. It wasn't that good of a set, and if Cody was in there, people would have bought it.

It was an alright set but Cody would have made it so much better

Nah there’s no issue with Lego not listening to us, they made some amazing sets 2007-2014. What a time for Lego Star Wars. Lego just need to return to their roots, because I genuinely don’t believe the money they are missing out on! Irrespective of the failed sequel trilogy Star Wars fervour is at an all time high! If Lego can get it right, like they seemingly are this summer, they’ll be on for a winner!

Do we have any info on the piece count for the UCS gunship yet? I expect it wouldn't contain that many pieces anyway since I think it's reasonable to expect a lot of bricks are going to be big (panels mostly, I guess)

3292 pieces. Pretty decent, it’s gonna be enormous so the piece count is too.

This is exactly why I voted for the nebulon. At least now I feel justified in buying the parts for the 2013 gunship.

I've been warning about this for months. There's going to be backlash and "lego doesn't care about the fans" because the gunship doesn't have every clone trooper to ever appear on screen.

Not exactly. Those were generic CIS/GAR vehicles that were based on the clone wars show, so they included clone wars commanders in the appropriate armor. However, the gunship is different as ever since the vote began, they've been extremely clear that the set would be based off attack of the clones, where a p2 cody could chronologically not appear. They can't have p1 and p2 clones in the same set, and obviously a p1 clone makes much more sense for an attack of the clones set than a p2 clone.

They also made three much larger gunships too, I think the gunship deserved to win, despite my annoyance since it is a more prominent vehicle. I won't/can't complain since I never voted.

Well there was the general grievous starfighter which could could have fitted in another minifigure and desperately needed something to entice consumers

Please stop calling the sequels failed. They reintroduced Star Wars into cultural relevance and made billions of dollars, irrespective of quality they succeeded in doing exactly what they set out to do.

Thanks, I must have missed this info somewhere - that's quite a lot of pieces, it's going to be a behemoth! I wonder if the model is going to have any parts reinforced especially for carrying around (similar to UCS Falcon or star destroyer) since I imagine the wingspan alone will make it clunky to do so

Yup. Opinion on a film has nothing to do with the facts of it's box office revenue (maybe not as much as some expectations but still massive amounts of money) and increased cultural relevance. Ironically, the sequel trilogy, through putting star wars back at the head of cultural relevence and encouraging people to watch all the films, probably led to at least some of the renewed prequel trilogy enthusiasm.

Well first,

Spoiler

Cody's been rumored for bad batch for awhile, as well as for kenobi.

But also, we're getting multiple clone wars sets this year, and we got clone wars sets in the years where it had been cancelled and there were no plans to continue it.

Yeah, all the time. People wanted the 501st battlepack- they got one. People didn't like how expensive the x-wings and ties were getting? New ones were produced for just over half the price. People wanted more PT sets? the 2020 and 2021 summer waves have greatly increased amounts of PT sets, possibly more than either other trilogy depending on how you count the mandalorian.

We already know we're getting multiple TCW sets this summer over a year after season 7 finished, the 501st BP and AAT both sold like hotcakes, not to mention we still got a handful of sets during the time period where the show was cancelled and didn't seem like it was coming back. I don't think Clone Wars sets are going away anytime soon.

Yeah, I agree with everything you said (along with your later stuff about the sequels) and I wanted to add that Cody specifically says that he was not at the first battle of Geonosis, I think in landing at point rain.

I don't really understand where the expectation for Cody is from.  He wasn't on a Gunship in ROTS (Gunships also got about two minutes of screentime in ROTS, most of which was Obi-Wan and Mace Windu on board one talking to each other on Coruscant), and they were never going to do a UCS set based on a cartoon when they've barely even done UCS stuff outside of the OT.

Plus, do you really want him in a $300 set that you can't even display him in, or would you rather wait a couple of years and hope to get him in a cheaper system set that he's actually compatible with?  Even if he came in the Gunship, 90% of the people that are clamoring for his figure aren't going to want to buy a $300 set just to get him, and on Bricklink he'll end up probably on par with Cloud City Boba Fett (the newer one, not the original) at $60+, even higher than that on eBay.

I understand why he wouldn't be included in an AOTC based UCS set but I'm saying he could be slotted into any other CW based vehicle set. We don't see Cody in an episode where something like Z-95 Headhunters appear, yet they could plop him in reasonably if they don't think it would sell well.

Oh, I forgot about that.

And yeah, they do listen sometimes, but the X-Wing and TIE were undersized (but I do really like them) and that really bothered a lot of people.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what you mean by PT.

Prequel trilogy.  Multiple reliable leakers have confirmed the summer wave, we've known since January.  From Clone Wars, an Ahsoka vs. Darth Maul duel, set (from Season 7), Mandalorian Starfighter (with Bo-Katan, Gar Saxon, and another Mandalorian), a Bad Batch Shuttle (which is probably based on the show but was featured in Season 7, it apparently contains all five members of the Bad Batch), and then there's still one more unknown set with no indication as to what it could be.  So we're getting at least three in this summer wave.  The full breakdown of the wave with prices and piece info (plus other info that we have known so far) is in the news thread.
