Best Mid-Sized Technic Models
allanp replied to Superfield's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
i was very temped to add 8109 to my list of favourite mid size models as well, but wasn't sure of the OP's part limit. But yeah, great set with great functions. -

Yes, it's about the same diameter as crawler wheels. -
Best Mid-Sized Technic Models

Do you have an upper limit in part count in mind? Some flagships of years ago would be considered small scale today but are still some of the best flagships ever such as 8455 at only about 700 parts, that has to be number 1. Other favourites of mine include 8439 and 8858. As for MOCs, I think this is OK for 199 parts http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=96669&st=25#entry1939843 -
I agree. Whilst a motorised pump is nice, there is nothing saying that the next pneumatic model will be motorised. As usual, I am most curious as to what new pieces we will be getting next year. any educated guesses? I think most likely we'll get new wheels and tyres on the IP car. If it is to be motorised and 300 euro, whether the high cost is from a very high piece count or lots of PF, either way it is going to be heavy. I also don't see the car having any gear reduction inside the wheel from portal axles or anything else, so this gives me reason to think that if it is motorised then some new drive train parts will be coming. Any thoughts?

You could try wrapping the string 5 times round the friction drive roller before it leaves to increase the surface area of string in contact with the roller. Increasing the diameter of the roller will also have the same effect, and make sure you have a tensioner. Another method would be to pinch the string between 2 rollers, like in a mig welder. I think fishing fishing line would work quite well.

I don't really mind stickers, I prefer them to printed pieces because you have the choice of using that design on the piece or not, and if you want to use the piece elsewhere in a MOC and the design doesn't look good you can peel the design off. Brick built details are obviously better but my main focus is on the technical aspects of the model, it is Technic after all, so whatever. If it makes the model look better on the shelves which makes the kiddies buy more Technic which in turn leads to TLG giving more to the Technic line then great

Compare trucks of today with those 30 years ago and they are basically the same. They look different now, but it's still a big diesel engine between two massive chassis rails powering a manual transmission with lots of gears driving a leaf sprung rear live axle or two. I guess because it works. So I guess the differences will be from greater fuel economy or use of a different fuel (which we can't replicate with Lego) or cosmetics. However, what about a concept truck 30 years from now? I can imagine it having 8 individually steered and sprung wheel units, kinda like these... ....but with only one wheel in the middle of each unit instead of 4, so that it could go pretty much go anywhere, move in any direction and turn on the spot if it wanted to. The base could also be used in military and emergency service vehicles.

Some details on the helicopter, I do not have pics or links to share but hopefully this description will be almost as good as to what you can and can't expect from it. I was originally going to keep silent but some of you were getting the wrong information. First off, there is no stand and no control center from what I could see, I honestly don't know what the others have seen. Maybe an earlier version? It has dual, 3 blade rotors (six in total) using the large rotor blades released with 9396. There is no pitch controls for the blades, they only counter rotate. It looked to be slightly shorter but bulkier than the cargo plane, it's mostly white with an orange under belly. It is using two of the 6 wide cement mixer pieces released in city sets a few years back, in white for engine cowls. There is a small, very simple blue container (I think it said bricks & beams Ltd on the side) hanging below from a string (is this what has been confused for a stand? ) . It is also completely covered/boxed in with panels, hardly any gaps. It's a fairly simple, boxy shape, though it is preliminary so it might get tarted up a bit. I can assume that the winch, rotors, a hatch for cargo and landing gear are motorised from a single motor through a typical function switching gearbox. Overall, it'll look good on the box on the shelves, but functionally and mechanically it looks to be quite simplistic and lacking compared to the cargo plane. So comparing it to other 1H flagships, here's where I'de rank it. Remember it is only preliminary at this stage. Functionality: 42025 Cargo plane 9397 logging truck 42052 helicopter 42000 racer 42039 24 hour racer 8070 muscle car Authenticity: 42000 racer 42025 Cargo plane 42039 24 hour racer 42052 helicopter 9397 logging truck 8070 muscle car Complexity: 42025 Cargo plane 9397 logging truck 8070 muscle car 42052 helicopter 42000 racer 42039 24 hour racer Looks: 42025 Cargo plane 42052 helicopter 42000 racer 42039 24 hour racer 8070 muscle car 9397 logging truck

75827 Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters Discussion
allanp replied to kelceycoe's topic in LEGO Licensed
Why would you want a small unimpressive set over a massive awesome set? We have so many sets, the vast majority of sets in fact are aimed at kids so I am glad that they are making this huge set for adults because personally I think this set will appeal most to adult fans of the original movie. Even if they aren't massive Lego fans, to see a huge, impressive model of their childhood will entice them more than a small set anyone could make. If they make 10% profit from every set, 10% of £250 is 5 times bigger than 10% of £50, so they would only have to sell roughly 1/5 as many to make the same profit. -

Agreed. no ecto 1, use that parts to make the HQ itself better. i think i would trade having it compatible with modular houses for it having a basement level with a small street area above and the storage facility inside.
