75827 Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters Discussion
allanp replied to kelceycoe's topic in LEGO Licensed
Well if it's worth it I'll buy it. If it is 4600 pieces, and it looks like it is 4600 then that's great. To me the helicarrier looked too small and simple to match it's price and part count. -

Thanks for the information. It helps during "the long wait"! I have lots of questions which may help us to the patient Can you tell if the jet and hydroplane racer have any features? Are the getaway racer and police intercepter vehicles just regular pull back sets? How does the race cart look, what wheels does it use? Wheels tell us a lot about it's size and scale. Same for the mine loader and drag racer and rescue vehicle. Can you see Do you know their functions? For the helicopter, do you know if the twin rotors have any cyclic/collective control? Can it move/raise/lower on it's stand like cc2 or is it a display stand? Is there a landing platform? Do you know what functions it has and which ones are motorised? Do you know the scales and functions of any of the 2nd half sets? For example, 8070 could be considered 1:10 scale where as 8448 could be considered 1:8 due to the size of their wheels. Poster 1974 said we will be surprised and disappointed and also that there is a reason why leaks are few this year, any idea what he's on about? Finally, for all the sets, are there any sets in interesting colours like dark blue or dark (british racing) green? Any pneumatics or any new pieces? You probably aren't allowed or do not have the info to answers many of these so no worries if you can't, but it's worth a shot me asking .

He's probably saying wow to something completely unrelated like, I dunno, he just ate an especially good sausage roll and just thought "wow, that's an especially good sausage roll. I mean, I just love sausage rolls. Sausage rolls is life. But I have never had such a tasty sausage roll. Oh how I love my sausage rolls. Well done greggs, you sweet and savoury bringer of sausage rolls". Or maybe he hasn't seen anything and he's just baiting you guys

From what I've read it seems like someone has seem them once or was told about them. I don't think they have pictures to share. If they did have them, and if they were allowed to share them, they would have. Don't ya just love this time of year! The anticipation! love it! I would like to see the pictures more though

What? It's nearly always been in two waves, January then July/August. As long as it makes money they'll keep on selling them. Will 2016 be a record year for Technic in terms of sets released? I know they released a large number in 1998 and that time period with all those micro sets, but not counting micro sets will 2016 be a record year for Technic in terms of sets released? Has the Technic team expanded to be able to deliver this many sets in the first half? Will there be a much bigger marketing push like what Ninjago enjoys to help enable the sales of all these new sets? Will our two heroes survive? Tune in next week!

High speed gearbox
allanp replied to F41RF4X's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Best selector is this one, found in 8880 or on bricklink: If you want it RC Then you can modify this idea as others have done: For a 3 speed, connect a servo motor to where the yellow lever is. For a 4 speed use an m-motor and worm gear drive in place of the servo. There are other more complicated and clever ways you can also try, such as this one posted by DurianObried: -
High speed gearbox
allanp replied to F41RF4X's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
When you say high speed gearbox, that really depends on the gearing you have before and after it so there really isn't any such thing as a high speed gearbox. I think what you are really asking for is high performance. In real life this will depend on various factors but in Lego Technic the key thing is efficiency. That is, how much of the motors mechanical output power is being "wasted" by driving the gearbox as opposed to just having a single drive axle. In the world of Lego Technic, this loss of power is your greatest enemy when designing a "high speed" gearbox. Because of that, there isn't really any that I could recommend because so much of it's performance depends on how rigid you build the surrounding structure as twisting due to torque can greatly reduce it's efficiency. I can recommend a basic gear setup: this can work very well but like I said, you have to design your own chassis around it, the more rigid and resilient to twisting the better. this design is also compatible with the new clutch gears and drive rings, you just make it 1M longer. One thing to bear in mind is that when clutch gears and drive rings are under load, they try to push apart like two magnets which causes friction and reduced efficiency. The newer ones appear to be less prone to that problem but it is still there. So another option may be a gearbox that doesn't use those clutch gears/drive rings. They aren't quite as elegant and I've found them to be less reliable, but thy do seem to be less power wasteful. In this design the red and blue axles rotate where as the green axle rotates and moves back and forth to select between different speeds. The example above is a 3 speed gearbox. This has the potential for higher performance however gears can slip and slide on their axles which for me is where the unreliability comes from. If you are gonna use a buggy motor (available from bricklink but they are pricey) then the gear teeth might get tore up a bit in this design as well. -
That is a pretty big oversight. Have you tried calling Lego customer service? They are very good.

This is a great way to have a community help out live with the build. -
My guess is that it's finished to the point of all the functions are there, they kinda know what it's going to look like and all the new parts are designed, tested and in place. From now till December will be refining the model and designing artwork/instructions. That's my guess. In the days of 8480 and 8880 I think there was more time between starting work on a new model and final release, like 3 years or something, maybe more. That's probably due to the ability the prototype new parts is now much faster, computers making everything faster in general and Lego's attempts at streamlining everything. I think they also had more than one designer working on each large model. I think 8480 had 3 designers.

I think to say "Aston Martin would not be bad" is not speculation. That is a wish. Speculation usually takes the form of "I think it could be ....... because ........". We have the name ultimate IP car. I speculated that it could be a licensed car because IP could stand for intellectual property. But then it might not stand for that, that was just speculation on my part.
