  1. You mean so that the PF switch is activated by the gearbox levers, turning the motor on whenever you select a function? That's a clever idea. I Guess it would have to use a cam system to move the switch only one way regardless of which lever you moved or which way you moved the lever.
  2. It is nice and complex, you'll enjoy it very much if you like gears. I wouldn't say it has the most complex gear trains though, which is to be expected at this part count.
  3. The gearbox is actually not as complex as it appears, though the way it works is awesome and much better than switching directions using the battery box. In most Technic gearboxes the drive ring is the input and the clutch gears are the outputs. This is not the case with this gearbox. Here all the clutch gears are the input and driven all the time by the motor. Each opposite pair of clutch gears (one pair for each drive ring) are being driven by the motor in opposite directions. When you engage a drive ring with the clutch gear, the drive ring and it's respective shaft rotate in one direction. Flick the drive ring the other way and it rotates the opposite direction. So I guess in this case it's not called a drive ring but a driven ring . It's shaft is then sent to a function. It looks more complicated than it really is due to there being one drive ring and two clutch gears per function when we are used to see two functions share one drive ring.
  4. An actuator similar to the one used to raise the bed of the barcode truck?
  5. A Technic set with no functions to me is like a married bachelor, by definition it's something that cannot exist.
  6. Yup, 42009's outriggers are also staggered, as they usually are in real life. I don't think the new telescopic parts are single use. They are used in two different places in the Arocs already, one powered pneumatically and two powered by gears. They are used to move/guide/extend something in a linear motion. There is more than one use for that.
  7. As soon as I can buy extra cylinders I'm adding full pneumatic outriggers. 1x11's for extending and standard ones for raising/lowering. If they had this in the set to start with it would have been even more expensive, which I personally don't mind but but I can see why they didn't make then fully working and at least this model gives us the new parts needed to make this modification. I might try to move the outriggers to directly below the turn table and re-route the slewing drive.
  8. Usually for the new parts. However 42043 looks like an interesting build, far more so than last years large sets so I'll be getting and building that for sure. 42042 also has a good supply of blue and a new turn table and the new clutch gears and so on so I'll get that. Here's a similar question, how many of you guys buy a set but do not build it, you just put the parts straight into your collection?
  9. Well like I say, some pumps are stronger than others. One of my motor pumps is very well used and you will hear air leak past the seals before hoses pop off. It also really depends on the exact composition of the hose material. Some older ones blow off very easily but the modern ones stay on tight.
  10. Some pumps are stronger than others. My most worn one only reaches 14 psi but most of them reach well over 40 psi, some near 60 psi.
  11. There was the live build on TechnicBRICKS http://www.technicbricks.com
  12. Nice video, thanks for all the hard work Sariel . It does strike me as a little weird how all the cylinders have the exact same max int pressure values, give or take 1 psi. Could it be that's the max pressure of your pump/valve? I'm just wondering because the guy in the toy fair video said these new cylinders are smoother in operation. This got me thinking that they upgraded the seal material. Did you also test the new pump to see what pressure that could make?
  13. TechnicBRICKS is now streaming the 42042 crane live build.
  14. Maybe, but it's not a toy just for kids
  15. Yeah, I always preferred the faster spinning engines. You can lower them as slow as you like by only partially opening the valve. In the video he just opened the valve wide open quite quickly. So it does take a little more skill to operate pneumatics properly, which for me is part of the fun .
  16. Air pressure is built up using the pump, that blue cylinder thingy. It contains the one way valves needed to create pressure. And yes there is a way to lower the boom slowly. If you watch the video closely you'll see that he quickly moves the lever all the way to it's extreme position, letting all the air out quickly. However if you move the lever slowly you will eventually hear air slowly start to release. Stop the valve in that position, where you hear air slowly being released and the arm will lower slowly. The valves are proportional in that respect.
  17. My first thing will be to upgrade the compressor for even more POWAH! It's clear that one pump works just fine but with 2 or 3 or 4 pumps working out of phase (for smoothness and less strain on the motor) this thing is gonna be a beast!
  18. You'll need hoses, pump and valve to operate the pneumatic. If you just want to hold the boom in place the pneumatic won't have enough friction to do that.
  19. Great review Sariel. I am very pleased with how well the pneumatics appear to work. DANG IT! How am I going to wait till Christmas? That has always been the day I build the big flagship for the first time. I.....can't......wait.....that......long......AAARRRGGGHHH!
  20. Absolutely fantastic I cannot wait to get this set. Great photos as well . P.S. thanks for the name dropping . It's hard being right all the time
  21. Most likely video: 42043 scoop drops treats in front of the rat...erm...I mean rodent...I mean hamster! Best video: 42043 scoop drops....I mean gently places hamster in it's bed full of treats! Wonder if a tiny hamster would fit in there, probably not. Very much looking forward to the review by the small hairy critter!
  22. What? You don't agree with me?! My whole world has just been turned upside down! I was actually hoping to avoid such a lengthy discussion, just wanted to show my appreciation for the direction TLG chose with this model
  23. I think I can get a good sleep during the build. He'll still be building it when I wake up I really like the crane. I like that they took the time to motorise the super structure rotation. Would have been nice to be able to steer the tracks but I prefer that it is NOT RC. I prefer a more "hands on" model, RC does nothing except make it more expensive.
