Yes! I would go with Guillermo del Toro for almost anything. I still wish we had gotten his version of the Hobbit instead of PJ's.

While you're probably right, it would not surprise me to see the Exo-Suit produced in similar numbers as the sets you mentioned. There is definitely interest and a market for it; mechas are probably the #1 thing that gets MOCed, yet are severely underrepresented in official sets. Those that are produced are very thematically tied-in as well (SH, Ninjago, Chima), so they don't fit in well with a generic setting or lend themselves to modding. On the other hand, because this one is pretty thematically generic, it probably won't have a lot of specialized parts or colors, plus the lack of license would mean a bigger margin on production, possibly spurring TLG to increase the number of sets produced. We can hope, anyway. If I like the final model, I would still try and snatch it up early, but I won't be surprised to see this set get a long run.

I can see some scenes from this "leaked" story coming throughout the movie, but no way is this the first twenty minutes.
-
I would say every tube is a separate part. If you cut one tube into two, how could they possibly still be one? When you dismantle the model, are they two pieces or one? I think the answer is pretty obvious. While I don't have a problem with modifying tube or string length, (unless, of course, contest rules prohibit it) I should point out that it's been more than five years. I have been collecting Technic sets for nearly 20 years and have never had the instructions ask that I cut a part.

I posted a similar reply but as a PM to legofreak86 (I don't want to drag the topic too far off ), except I had not considered the cosmic villains aspect, which makes a lot more sense in addition to what I already expected. I agree that Fox is the ones shooting themselves in the foot here (being uncooperative with Marvel), but I also believe Marvel is cutting off its nose to spite its face (cancelling anything FF related). At least that means we'll probably still be getting X-Men sets, although it may be a long time before any FF.

That's because it isn't part of the MCU, and they don't want to confuse people. Heck, some still can't figure out why Spidey and the X-Men don't just team up with the Avengers My guess is as the release gets closer, they will advertise the Marvel name while still driving home that this is a Disney movie.

I am guessing that photo editing is OK for removal of background, but are added effects also allowed (so long as it doesn't obscure/alter the model)?

I may be wrong on this, but as I understand it, Marvel and Fox's licencing agreement is how the agreement with Sony used to be: Sony owned the movie rights to Spider-Man, Marvel owned the merch rights, but they were required to share profits between the companies. So after each film release, they would come together and negotiate how big of a chunk they got of each other's pie. Obviously, given how frustrating and ineffective that would be, both studios got fed up with the process and so amended the contract to remove the profit-sharing requirement. Now Sony gets any money from the movie, distribution, etc. and Marvel gets everything from the merchandise. However, Fox's agreement is (I believe) still set up the old way, and so if Marvel put out movie-related toys and merch they have to cut a check to Fox. Reading some articles at Bleeding Cool and other sites, apparently the CEO of Marvel got tired of paying Fox, who was unwilling to renegotiate their contract the same way Sony had. So, Marvel decided to just cut them off--both X-Men and FF--in toys and other merchandise to avoid having to pay contractual royalties to them for selling toys based off its own characters. For the near future, my guess is we won't be seeing any FF sets, and probably only enough X-Men sets to fulfill any pre-existing contract Marvel/Disney already had with Lego, or they will make them decidedly un-movie-related. (I believe that comics are not part of the studios' agreement, but rumors have been swirling that Marvel might cancel its run of FF books anyway as a further move to make Fox's properties irrelevant. I have not heard the same for any X-Men books.)

Well, and LOTR. Either way, I don't think we'll be getting a TLM Batwing. Although I find this idea amusing: WB licensing Batman to Lego, who licenses it back to WB for TLM, and WB licenses it back to Lego once again for a Batman Lego Movie Lego Batman set.

WORLD CUP 2014 The Maracanã Stadium

Very impressive, not just in size but also accuracy. A little disappointed the pitch doesn't have the old Lego Sports baseplates though (not really) -
LEGO Ideas: 21110 Research Institute/Female Minifigure Set
rodiziorobs replied to just2good's topic in LEGO Town
I'm glad this one will be made, but even more so that they changed the name. "Female Minifigure Set" is really bland and uncreative, and practically screams "gender-ratio-balancing appeasement set." On the other hand, "Research Institute" ties the multiple vignettes together thematically--the astronomer, paleontologist, and chemist--by science rather than by the figs simply all being women. It also is more open-ended, allowing for further sets a la Minecraft if it sells well. But the best reason for me? A chance to get a bunch of neat little pieces and figs together in one set for under $20. On the other end of things, I wonder why Zelda didn't pass this time--of all projects to get this far, this one seemed most feasible. Plus, Nintendo recently stated that since their game and console sales were underwhelming, they were going to try and pursue licensing more actively. Evidently not. Maybe the fourth time will be the charm... -
Well, I liked him in the Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon...Of course those are my main exposure to him, so I haven't had my opinions colored too much. My experience here is the same, I liked Pym in the EMH (next to BTAS, probably the best SH cartoon ever), but Wasp was invariably better. However, then when I found out about how Pym is in the comics, my opinions changed a little. I think the Scott Lang approach for the film is probably the best angle to take. In Wright's defense, he was on board with Ant-Man before Marvel even had a sandbox. He first approached them about doing an Ant-Man movie back in 06. It seems like the sandbox kind of built itself around him, and maybe he was oblivious to what was going on? I doubt it; with the success of the movies, the establishment of a shared universe, and the Thor 2/ Patty Jenkins bit he had to have seen the inevitable creative friction mounting between his vision and Marvel's. The question is, why did he wait so long to drop out? I do agree with you, though; the movie's ability to tell a story alongside the rest of the MCU is more important than a director's particular voice. I don't think the film will not suffer from Wright's departure, except for the bad publicity and lack of time before filming. Hopefully, they postpone the release if needed, rather than rushing through post-prod to meet the deadline.

Defining the Haven Guard (or whatever their name turns out to be)
rodiziorobs replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
My votes: Haven Guard: I don't think 'colonial' fits. Haven isn't my favorite, but I can't think of anything better, and I do like that it is decidedly neutral. Green: although I would like to see the blue trim in silver instead. While orange would not be a bad color for the figs, I think a green insignia/flag/sail emblem would look better than orange, so I would say green overall. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 12 Rumours and Discussion
rodiziorobs replied to Rufus's topic in Special LEGO Themes
My guess is that this is a non-licensed attempt to capitalize on the Hunger Games, and the tranq gun would negate that. Probably, the tranq dart was an afterthought to make the character different enough to avoid copyright issues, along the tacked on 'Dino Hunter' title. I don't mind; this, the Warrior Goddess, and the Hun (still waiting on pictures) figs are for-sure buys for me, in multiples if I can swing it.- 1,109 replies

Although you're probably right for this example, its not always the case. I had roommates from the south, one would ask for a Coke from the fridge, and the other would ask what kind. The response? "Orange." Not to mention the only pop/soda/soft drink we had in the fridge was the generic store brand anyway. What this has to do with Lego I'm not sure Sorry mods!
-
My 5-yr old son knows and understands the difference between Lego and other brands. When we go to the store, he is excited to see everything on the Lego aisle, but doesn't even bat an eye when we go past the Megabloks and Kre-o. I swear I did not teach him to do this. He even has a little off-brand race car set that a well-intentioned aunt gave him, which he stores in the same box as his Lego. When he mixes up all his sets to build something new (something which drives his mother crazy, but doesn't bother me), he deliberately puts that car aside to make sure he doesn't accidentally mix it in as well. I on the other hand make an exception for Tyco super blocks. I don't have a ton of them (and I am careful not to use any when building for a contest), but I feel like they are every bit as good in quality as Lego. (Apparently TLG thought so, as well, which is why Tyco was forced to stop making them about 20 years ago.)

Winter Village Sets - Rumours and Discussion
rodiziorobs replied to Gearslover01's topic in LEGO Town
I find it interesting that practically everything said about this set has to do with the reindeer. I have a hard time thinking that the designer went in planning on brickbuilt reindeer. More likely IMO, they pitched a request for a new mold at TLG, who regretfully had to turn the request down because of all of the reasons Faefrost has demonstrated. I think TLG would liked to have had a new mold, but couldn't justify it financially. Apart from the reindeer, the more I look at the house, the less I like it. It's not terrible, but kind of -meh-. I may still pick this set up, though. If I can justify it financially. -
The title doesn't exactly thrill me, but it's not terrible either. What worries me more is that they already went from a working title to an "official" title...but haven't started filming yet. The rumors of rewrites are none too inspiring either. But the worst is David Goyer's recent statements where he reveals his ignorance about comics, and women, etc, and this is the guy who is bringing Wonder Woman to the screen? I want to look forward to BvS:DoJ (what a mouthful), but WB isn't helping much.

Ambassador Project - Defining the Factions
rodiziorobs replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
Orange with blue detail looks fantastic, but the suggestion of green with gold I think would be equally good. While I'm still not totally sold on the distinction between Smugglers and Merchants resting on garish versus earthy colors, it is the simplest answer. I do like The_Cook's mention of a Robin Hood-type conflict-maybe the garish colors represent only the (corrupt) East Brick Trading Co (not necessarily allmerchants), and the smugglers are the Robin Hood type? That could lead to a fun set where the smugglers' leader could disguise himself as part of the EBTC. Sorry, I am getting ahead of myself. Again. -
Ambassador Project - Defining the Factions
rodiziorobs replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
I like this whole idea (esp. the Octan in-joke, even though the name itself is a little impractical), except for the prohibition/rumrunning. While historically realistic, I have a problem with the smugglers--who, as stand-in Pirates, would be the characters kids would play with most--being all about sneaking alcohol. That being said, the crackers idea isn't cutting it either. I don't know, maybe it is the whole concept of smugglers that seems to be holding things up. I mean, Pirates are a crude bunch of criminals, but since they are so obvious about everything, you (i.e. LEGO) can play off of the flamboyant stereotypes when designing sets, story, and minifigs. Since smugglers are by definition more secretive and hidden, it makes it hard to have them as a separate faction whose characters and story are easily identified to kids. There becomes this need to explain what they do and why they are criminals, but without the fun factor of "a pirate's life for me, yo ho!" As other posters have mentioned, iincluding Brig. Brick above, they would need essentially the same color scheme as the merchants, so at what point are they a discernible faction? I suppose if there were some type of Clue thing going on (where you had to deduce which figs were smugglers), that could justify it, but that would need some other sort of media--video game or tv show--to make it work, which is already outside the bounds of this project's scope. -
Good to know! I was going to make a trip up to Murray this weekend, but maybe I'll wait a week so I can pick up a GOTG sets. In the meantime, I'll have to convince my wife to let me spend more than anticipated...

Review Review: 70816 Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!
rodiziorobs replied to Rufus's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Fantastic review! I honestly don't expect to get this set-partly because to me CS is just another theme, but mostly because my Lego budget is already strained with so many other must-have sets this year! But even though I don't plan to buy it, I kept reading because this is such a well-written review; not only thorough and organized, but well worded and thought out. If you hadn't already earned the set in the speed contest, you would have for sure earned it now. Thank you, I look forward to future reviews!- 228 replies
