Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Herky replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
see that is how it got started, we all were trying to one up each other with our fantastical ideas for modular, mine just happened to be a florist with a full greenhouse. After seeing some of the great MOC's out there, I know it can be done, actually I think it could have a basement to it and power functions, the plants could have a rotating sprayer for water and the basement could be done by building the main floor higher and a crawl space in there where the water tanks would be. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

LOL, sorry folks, that was just a reply to some other fantastical rumors that were floating about. I made up the florist thing...Lego is NOT going to put out a 5500 piece set. I had imagined it could be cool though to have a florist with a greenhouse out back. It could be done and could be really cool, but there is no kiddie story in that type of a building so I have to discount it now. Amusement hall, sure, kiddie story would work, could fit in with the modular theme or the fairground theme or bridge the two. I am holding out hope for a museum since they put the kibosh on the wonderful Ideas submission. -
I like this too, the outside reminds me of an old Woolworths in my hometown or maybe an ice cream shop, but your interior was quite good as well. Very nice job.

October, they only do it in March and October, so you have a bit of a wait...sometimes they will do double points on a certain theme though
-
great job, makes me wonder how hard Lego is really trying with their Architecture line...so many good things they could produce like this, but they have so few offerings during the year. I would buy any of these.

Right, I almost posted this there, but this is a specific thread for this round of selections only, each round used to have its own thread as well so see nothing wrong with a separate thread, but if the admins combine, so be it...and just to say, the maze is going to be produced. I think that is a good set based on what can happen with a creative Lego build, but I felt the piano was good as well, the licensed ideas were excellent, but feel the licenses would likely be what would cross those off the list, although JP is already there, so who knows. As a modular fan, I really liked the museum. SDCC is coming up so let's hope they do announce the release dates of BBT, Dr Who and Wall*E then

Wasn't Big Bang Theory supposed to come out? I don't even remember what the other 2 were...

Won't spoil it, but not surprised at some decisions...was surprised at the one they chose though.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Herky replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
personally and selfishly, I am still hoping they go with the Museum that reached 10k votes on Ideas...it is highly unlikely though due to all the reasons that have been posted before...I can't see a hotel either until they get through with all of the municipal buildings that need to be done. A library maybe...always fun to discuss and speculate. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Wow, that B&N bookstore is right up my alley, special techniques to build aren't really needed if you can produce a great building. I am too old to worry about these stories and techniques and all that. I supported it, way better than our current offering of DO if you ask me, better colors, better inside, you can get your hands inside to do it right. It's a bookstore for goodness sake, it's not supposed to be some fancy creation and it has both the possibility of a story for TLG to sell to those who want and a good build for the rest of us who want to stick to tradition. Anyone could switch out the colors I guess. ScotNick, not sure why you would be upset, all you did with your train was redo the Emerald Night train slightly, you did exactly what you accuse this guy did...and for the record, I like your train and supported it as well. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Herky replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Kitty, despite OTW's silliness, he actually would go for an Art Nouveau building, as would I. You just have to remember we are never to be taken seriously, just sometimes poke fun at things. I took a look at the new sets that are coming and if there was a way to make the Friends hotel in a cool manner, I do not see why it wouldn't sell as a modular. Same with the Scooby Doo mansion. The main point OTW and many others of us have made and will continue to make is that the Modular series with its price point and piece count as an expert is traditionally thought of as an AFOL build. The problem then becomes that we get kiddie oriented stories to go with them to put whimsy into the creation, something that for us, being more serious about the hobby, find a bit deplorable. I want cool buildings...and while the last 2 offerings could be considered good to some, there are those of us who do not need the silliness that accompanied the PR and now DO from the story and whimsy point of view. I could care less what color you give me, look at the nice places in Miami that are Art Deco and such with the colors, but don't give me an AFOL build aimed at a 9 year old. I guess it could really be me, I need to adjust my outlook as maybe 9 year olds is really the target audience, but the line was never designed or considered for anything but AFOL when it started with Market Street. That guy who created it did so for the adult audience. To that end, I have come to the conclusion to purchase what I want and like, and stop being a completest in any line. As to what is a modular, I would consider them to be the creator line of buildings that do connect, hit the 1000+ piece count and started with Market Street through the current Detective Office building. Hope you all have a great day! PS, here is a link to an article that I saw today: http://www.popsugar.com/moms/Best-New-Lego-Sets-2015-36885531?stream_view=1#photo-36885534 Interesting choices. -
Interesting that TLG would do Year of the Sheep instead of Year of the Ram...my relatives in Taiwan and those Chinese I know here never call it Year of the Sheep...it's always Ram. Would be interested to hear from others in the Chinese culture what they think. I believe I read this is technically the Year of the Green Yang, but Yang can be interpreted differently. I don't think it is a big deal since a Ram is the male alpha sheep, although I have also heard some say in English Year of the Goat. I guess you would have to go back to the ancient Chinese writings to get the definitive on it.

Appreciate that Rick wants us to talk about the 2 new sets in the licensed forum, but then you get into cross informational...sure the 2 new ones are licensed properties but the previous Birds was not. So either Lego Ideas needs to find a home, which I thought was here in Special Themes, or move to a new overall Theme, who knows, let them figure it out. So to move past the new offerings and get back to discussion, interested to hear thoughts on what AFOL's think about the process that TLG uses to determine what they will make? I get the rules are clear on what can be offered, but I guess I am still confused why only 1 set gets made out of the submissions. When you have people get 10K votes, and then 8 make it, that's easy math, 80K people would like to see those sets made. I am not sure what TLG's cutoff is but we know they have made sets with a ceiling of 10K pieces before such as the Billund Airport, Marina Bay Sands and I think there is one other. I believe the first Lego Cuusoo was a set amount of 10K sets as well. I get they have a helicarrier coming out already, and others, it just seems if you get the votes, it is unlikely that unless your piece count is small, you will never have a chance to have your creation see the light of day. The new Pleyworld concept is very intriguing, I think that is really the wave of the future if you want to get your project made into a real set. Any thoughts?

I wish TLG would expand the Birds set, why stop at 3? They did a special edition for their employees but the cost on ebay is crazy. Also, fine to do Wall E but why not just add Eve in there too? I hope WallE comes with a plant.
-
I have to doubt any set but the piano from the next offering will get through, TLG isn't interested in making good fan sets anymore. I like the WallE, thought it was well done, liked Dr Who, also well done, maybe I get them, maybe not. My point is more that there is more than 1 that was worthy, to just limit to 1? I am stopping any support of Lego Ideas offerings cause why go through that process to get the 10K votes only to see it turned down? If I was the losing folks, I would get it over to Pleyworld.
-
Wall E and Dr Who from last time made the cut...I think Lego Ideas is certainly going downhill, what a lame decision to do 1 only out of several good offerings. I really like the Pleyworld concept better where if you get 500 votes and it is viable, Pleyworld will make it and you can get it. TLG is quickly losing my support, sheesh, get with it folks, it isn't that hard.

March's Double VIP- What are you buying?
Herky replied to TheFuzz's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Agree, was wondering the exact times for the 2x points, if you are going to spend big, might as well do it then. -
very nice little Louvre set...my main issue with it, of course that it is too small, hahaha, yes almost all my complaints are that the Architecture line is too small, but I would love to see it at least half again as big. This is a nice looking set, will get this one first day. Thanks for the link, guess it is time for 2016 discussion now though since we know that is it for 2015.

There is a really cool Arch in our Science Center here that Adam Reed Tucker did, it is about 2 feet tall at its keystone, it's a very nice rendition and likely a good $200 set if they produced it. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BRjDC0yv3LM/UEbKbheecsI/AAAAAAAAAFE/-oe8G39rq1c/s320/Image08292012151946.jpg pic on the arch, I have pics but photobucket doesn't work well with this site Here is another set I would love to see:

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Herky replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
DD, I think a lot of folks feel that those have no chance to pass through, esp the museum, but I am still hopeful. Moebius, this is why I haven't bought the PR or DO yet, didn't want to build them and just twiddle thumbs...so I got the R2 before it retired, that was a fun build and if you like Star Wars, I really think they nailed it. I do plan to get the PR this year and then maybe DO late in the year so it feels like 2 modular buildings in the same year. I think TLG is already in the final stages of the next modular design and build, but haven't started producing it yet, I am guessing they gear up the factories in the 4th Q to have plenty of sets on hand for that January release but they need to retire the next one first to move to that production. I know a guy who said at Hallmark they are always doing the ornaments 2 years ahead of time so this summer they are working on 2017 ornaments since the 2016 designs are in the can and they will get them in production now for their July sale. I have to think TLG does something similar, that all sets are designed at least a year ahead and then production runs 6 months out to sale date. Would be interesting to know though, but I doubt we ever will. -
holy moly, that totally sucks...what's the point of continuing this line if they aren't going to devote time and resources to it...The LM was small and while I like it, I expected better. I will get Flatiron but not excited about it. And a last set at the same price as Flatiron doesn't instill a huge yippee from me...although I will through out that maybe it is 2 small $24.99 sets? I know that doesn't add up, but one could do math to break it down, just didn't want to. Really doesn't matter, just disappointed once again in TLG's lack of attention to an AFOL line, they are too busy building Frozen sets I guess.

I would think there is a market for it as others have said, especially at Christmas with nativity scenes and Easter with certain sets, but you can do the other items mentioned and they would likely sell as well. As a Christian, I would buy a Lego nativity if it was priced decently. I get the advent calendar, which is religious based from the 19th century protestant traditions so TLG does make that. There are actually a lot of fun religious based sets that could work, an ark, a minifig of Jonah and a large fish, Moses and the tablets...you could have fun with an ark of the covenant and then throw in some Indiana Jones too. (you have to have fun with it right?) I have always been surprised that a company like McFarlane hasn't tackled religious figures...it's a decent concept, you just have to be able to make it viable.

Anyone know when Flatiron will be in stores? Any rumors at all for any other sets in 2015?

I have to agree with your review, you nailed it, the only thing I chuckled about was playability. I guess some folks would "fly" them but I feel these are more meant to be built and then displayed and appreciated. The only thing I wasn't thrilled about was the base where the "stick" on the birds go, putting it through the 2 holes vs a more solid connection seemed like they will fall out at times. The only other part was the hummingbird flower, same thing, if you touch it, it falls. Thanks for posting your review.
