Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Herky replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks Binary, appreciate the info on Diggy, sounds like he/she is legit then. Am guessing you are either in Champaign or Bloomington, been to both, am in St Louis...love college towns, Columbia MO has bars still very similar to what you say, and would like refer to those places as Bar and Grill since that is what they want. I personally think those big chains are not as good as the hometown mom and pop shops. Well, if Diggy is reliable, this is going to be one heck of a building, one week basically to go to find out. -

I would almost say that in the US if you want a real bar, you look for a place called Tavern...an older word but I don't think I have ever seen the whole food experience at a tavern, but then there is only one tavern I know of these days and it isn't even where I live. One of the downfalls of the bar movement to a food place with a bar as well has been the laws that now prohibit smoking. I am not a smoker and do not really care for it, but most bars used to allow it and now if you serve food you can't allow smoking in a lot of places. Most college and universities have outlawed smoking on campus too so college town bars/taverns are getting fewer too. You almost have to serve food to get by which means no smoking which cuts down on much other than the family atmosphere or college party too. -

I did not discredit him or her...I just asked if anyone knows if this is reliable information, interesting you went negative right away there. Personally I will pick it up either way, but the more info that comes out, the more I am confused at what a crazy building this will be...when's the last time you went to get a haircut, had a case for a detective and stopped in for a pint all in one building? Just seems odd to me is all I said. American bars...well in the last what, 20 years I would say, there is a movement away from the corner bar to the "experience" of a bar and grille, so now we have neighborhood food joints that have bars in them such as 54th St Bar and Grille, TGIF's, Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn, even Applebees or Outback grew out of the trend really. Usually decent food fair and beer but they can do mixed drinks too. You will see kids in these places quite often. A true just bar, hard to find anymore, one that serves alcohol only that is. Drinking age was 18 in many states for a long time until maybe the late 70's early 80's but you wouldn't take kids in there, lots of smoke, drinking and carousing. Now I have never been in a biker bar but that is kind of a different animal, Euro might have more insight there. See the US movie Road House for an extremely Hollywood view, but there are places like that. In short, the American bar is a far cry from an English pub or European bar, do not know much about Australia drinking establishments other than movies (we know how accurate that can be) but I would say it's more due to the drinking age than anything as to why kids don't appear in bars. No need to take a kid into a place where people are in various stages of drunkenness. That and maybe a bit of a holdover attitude from the temperance movement...it's funny, most folks I know drink a lot, (I don't) but they do not frequent bars. Folks in the US are interesting to say the least, lots of contradictions all over the place. -

Does anyone know how reliable this Diggydoes is? The more info we get, the more I scratch my head, bar now? I can't imagine TLG doing a full on bar...so we have a detective agency/barber shop/bar combo with an alley now. Not saying it couldn't happen, but it just sounds odd at this point. -

well there have been some great ideas here and great MOC's too, the Ideas site does have some great MOC's...I would say we are not the total audience, but if they wanted to take a good measure, this thread and site would be a great place to start to get an all around opinion from several countries/age ranges/wallets at once...good companies will listen to their customers -

sorry, but that sounds like the oddest 2 buildings/1 modular I would ever think of, a detective agency and a barber shop with a pool table in there somewhere with an alley...if you held a contest a year ago on the likelihood of the next modular, there is 1 in a billion chance anyone would put that combo together. Will certainly be interesting to see this thing hopefully next week. I am almost scared at this point, I don't even want to speculate on what they have created. I say put some shag carpeting in there somewhere, why not? quick question though, how many apartments does this make in the modular series? I think it is 5 or 6 now, which makes sense, have to give them places to live, but holding out hope we get a brownstone type of modular in the series for a real living space at least it's not another corner although I think next year might be, can't remember the pattern someone put out and too lazy to go back through all the pages to find it -

that's a pretty good set, I did talk to the folks at my local Lego Store, they did say Nov 15 and web only orders, sounds like Amazon has them early though -
having been in several (sometimes overseas they are the only place you can find American food and after a while where you ate nothing but the local cuisine, you just have a craving) this is pretty accurate and a very well built modular. I too like the iconic guitar on the outside façade and the stage is great and even the memorabilia case that you have in there. Very nice build!

I don't see why it wouldn't pass review other than the high piece count, the first modular, as I have stated, was an AFOL submission, nothing wrong with keeping that precedent going...there are some things that likely would inhibit it, but 0% chance, I would say more like 20% chance. They could easily put this out as the 2016 modular with tweaks. I supported the Starbucks even though I don't ever go there, I think the build is very nice, they could take Starbucks off and go generic with something else but keep the build style. There is always hope I guess even in the face of odds...in fact, I just quote Han Solo...Don't tell me the odds! -

maybe I am mistaken but I thought that review period was over, so the museum would be review 3 period which has none in it right now. Review 2 was the WallE, etc group...from what the video said there are 3 review periods each year, BBT and Birds made it out of Review 1 with Who being considered, then Review 2 was Wall*E, hubble, GB HQ, etc. Then review 3 is whatever hits 10K next...or am I just nuts? That is a distinct possibility. All I know is if the first modular was a fan created pre Lego Cuusoo/Ideas build and we get another in there, this should send a big message to TLG. -

I emphatically agree with BirdofPrey, Chicago's Field Museum, which to me is the quintessential museum of natural history (haven't been to NYC) is not exactly colorful, so I like the whole thing the way it is. I even like the back wall in the pics at Field Museum adds color with large banners that get draped down the front. A museum is not really supposed to be colorful, even the art institutes I see are drab outside...so this where OTW's architecture comment comes in I guess. But there are not sets that blend the two lines of architecture and modular. I would hate to see much changed by TLG on this build and honestly, if it hits 10K and there are no others that do in this review, it seems to be a travesty if something is not made. Jamie, Astrid, whomever...get on the net and check some of these out, make it! -

feel free to slap my hand if this is out of turn, but I was looking at Lego Ideas today and see the History Museum is less than 1000 away from 10K needed with 174 days left https://ideas.lego.com/projects/46720 If anything I hope TLG takes notice of this modular and spins it in the next few offerings as an official set, in any case, it is currently the most supported Idea on the site -
I personally think if you spend that much in a year, there should be some kind of exclusive set that you are given. $30-$50 range, heck you have to spend $5K to get an invite, a 1% of the cost set wouldn't be too much to ask. They could do a 40000XX set for you. If you choose to resell it, then fine, but I think the high rollers should get a special treatment, seems very anticlimactic if you just get the same treatment this year as last, especially if you already bought all the big stuff, there is nothing really left for you to get unless you are going the Christmas/Hanukkah present route.

ok, thanks, I think that is where I went haywire, if I recall correctly, the one last year was on that Black Friday, not the week before, so if you are an invitee and have to work, you are screwed that day or have to take it off, while most folks are off on black Friday. Doesn't much matter to me since I do not have the invite, but it's interesting they have it on the calendar. Clears it up at least, what would stink is that black Friday was 3X points last year and if you got the invite and go the 22nd, then you would miss out on the points. I am good with not having the invite personally. oh and OTW, maybe they will have a special accessory pack, 1000 small items that could or could not fit into a modular that you may or may not need, but will cost a lot for no reason to help you with the interior of you special GE

but is that the 22nd one or 29th? are there 2? maybe I am all mixed up...are they doing 2 of them? Seems really dumb to print it on the calendar for all VIP's if just an invite to the high rollers. I would love to be a high roller, but confined on income somewhat, and storage.

I just watched The Maltese Falcon a couple of weeks ago...very interesting movie as I had not seen it before, would never fly by today's standards as a movie, way too chauvinistic and honestly not a great plot. However, as a building for a modular, I can easily see this being done or the Sherlock Holmes style, which I prefer. If they do SH, they need to do Holmes, Watson and Mrs Hudson in minifig form, plus Toby. You don't have to call them by these names but the characters would be referenced by generic minifigs. Still waiting though, who knows. -
OK now I am confused, I did not get an invite for the 22nd but the calendar says for all VIPs to come in so it seems open to all, I did get to go to the Black Friday last year and was disappointed...but how would the 22nd be the exact same thing they will do a week later? Or did I misunderstand what you meant?
-
Monster Fighters! I think they can do a lot more with this and everyone loved the HH so why not keep it going more?

the word I got was this was a mini black Friday event, but without any discounts or anything...so to me, this is just another day at the Lego store, if they said ok, 3x points or something I would be intrigued. I am stopping by this weekend and will see if they can give me any more info to post here for you
-
don't forget that invite that is shown is for a UK store, not a USA store...there seem to be 2 events as well, the Nov calendar shows a VIP event on the 22nd, then there is the regular black Friday event held in the US The explanation that Shay gave was almost the exact same one that I got last year on how to get invited. Our local store though, you had to have spent around $6000 to get an invite and I got lucky as the store manager gave me hers. The event was, as stated, meh...got the same stuff I would have gotten later in the day. I have no idea what the event on the 22nd is though, calendar just says: "VIPs visit the LEGO store for special holiday offers!"
-
are you talking about the Nov 22 one or the black Friday event they have every year? Luckily the store employees at my local store already know all about both, did you talk to the manager? It's their job to make sure all the employees have been communicated to about it. Good luck, last year was disappointing to be honest.

Hmm...I was hoping for a bakery shop, get my sweet tooth on, I suppose if it is a big bus station, it might have room for all. -

Well I don't mean to be a jerk, and hopefully wasn't too much of one, but I do not understand why people keep asking the same questions over and over, I get that with my kids as is, so wondering why, when we have a forum that provides information, that people do not take advantage of it. When I was new to the site, I went into each thread and read a bunch before I started posting. Again, not trying to be a jerk, but folks, don't be so lazy, take the time to use the site and read the info that is provided. March 5 eh? Hmmm...just 10 more days seems better for a retirement, at least it did for the Romans. -

What? Didn't you all see the press release? Seriously, look at the last what, 15-20 pages of this thread, we have discussed this ad nauseum, no, OTW does not know the date of retirement, his was a facetious way answering. No one knows when the next modular is retiring, but the bottom line is if you want one that is 2 or 3 years old, you better think about picking it up, Town Hall has gone on a tear recently for being available/unavailable, and now leans more towards the un part of that. I would say the only guarantee to be in stock is PR and PC at this point, and good luck finding the others, if you have the money and want it, then get it. We need to end all the speculation over and over on this thread cause we just keep going in circles. If you are new to the thread, please go back a few pages and read, if you have been posting for a while, well you know the drill. We just need to update on availability and what's coming next and what we would like to see. -

Shop@Home in US now has all the sets listed, Nov 15 for release date.
