The Empire of Corrington: Sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
We will have to get a MOD to make a thread for us, I don't have those powers. Some sort of fair system will be worked out when judging, I just realized that only Kabel and I have judging experience from GOH, but we will probably bring some of that style judging here. Glad to hear about Arlinsport's many new ventures coming in this month! We started with the smallest Sea of Storms port, but we are quickly growing. Are there any complaints about us moving three platoons of our regiment to Port Raleigh this month? There are no forts there for protection, and Arlinsport does have two large NPC forts guarding it. (On another note, anyone who MOCs these forts will get the right to name them) And we did not do this last month, but we could load the other six platoons onto the warships to give us greater crew values. The rule is as follows: Troops can be put on ships as marines to compliment the crew number of a vessel. However, Royal forces will NOT be put on privately owned vessels, unless they belong to a trade company. The maximum allowed troops on one ship is determined by the crew value of the troops. A vessel’s crew size can be doubled if enough troops are available. For example, a heavy sloop could have two platoons added to it to extend its crew value to 9, it could not add another platoon because its original crew value is 5, and 5 doubled is only 10. An extra platoon gives 2 more crew value, and would exceed 10 by 1 value point. Finally, I wanted to talk about the importance of expansion (and this is for all factions) Not only do more ports mean more income for the faction, but in phase two of the MRCA, the wealth traded at a port will probably help increase the "bank" of the settlement and the nation's trade values. It is in the best interest of the faction to expand and control more territory, but also have successful trade ports that are visited by many traders. It may get a little repetitive to see so many houses and shops, but remember the other great thing about BoBS is that there is a common story weaved through all of these builds. So, maybe you are finished building houses for a while, but need background for a story line you want to write. You can always license / free build and report your background buildings! So there is many ways to increase the value of settlements, even if you are tired of building businesses. Bottom line, even if you don't want to play EGS or MRCA, just registering your free build in a location will make that location grow for your team, and earn your faction points. Please everyone remember this! Also with wealth comes FIPs for your faction, after challenge two it will become a little more clear what you can buy with FIPs (you will want to hold on to some too!) but to give a hint of one of the possibilities, perhaps your nation will be able to use them to mount a large voyage of discovery into uncharted waters that will allow your faction first dibs on everything they find.- 897 replies

He is referring to the "income" column, which is actually next months income and not anything that was added in your totals. I think this is all your business. As Maxim said, it would also depend on who caught the enemy. Technically escorts can fight together as packs as well, although that is a little more complicated. (CB4 if you are reading this, I forgot to mention that in our discussion) If a royal ship, one who is not charging a fee catches the ship, I would think that they would not share the prize with the merchants, since they are inherently benefiting from free protection. Privately owned escorts should negotiate with their convoys, but in the rules it is the escort who captured the vessel who has the game license awarded to them.

Right, but each company - trade or not - that wants to have its own account does have to register it so that the books are kept for that entity as well. We do reserve the right to decline a company's account -- especially if it is just one or two people.

I will be slow this month, not sure I will get challenge entries in (I can't win, but I can add to our score). My father-in-law had a heart attack two days ago, so life is pretty hectic, and I will be out of town for a conference the 17th-25th, all of this makes building pretty impossible. Anyone is welcome to build in Port Raleigh, the town has a Bahamas mixed with New Orleans feel in my mind. IF we win the challenge, then we get two(!) islands. So keep working on those challenge builds if you have not.- 897 replies

This is something for the adjudication form. The trade company benefits were not calculated this month due to oversight, but those wishing to collect them, must fill out the form. Also, all DBs round down except when paying the bank, where it rounds up. To Milo, the trade companies may be granted bonuses for certain types of industry and commerce. Right now only Eslandola has official trade companies that own monopolies. Any nation can have a trade company, and if the company grows large enough, it is possible that a monopoly or something similar will be granted to it as well.

Coyle Shipping Co. February MRCA Escorted Trade runs
SkaForHire replied to Mike S's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
It looks like most of Corrington is in agreement, and the Queen gives her blessing, to add Paridisio to the official Naval Rolls for our Fleet in the Eastern Waters. The Lords of the Naval board have instructed the captains of the four royal ships to follow the routes chosen by Coyle Shipping Company this month. -
[ESL-FB2] The Mine Is Mine
SkaForHire replied to Captain Braunsfeld's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Although I would say that it is not just SKA that tells you, but all leaders will be able to quickly roll a mine result if need be, because we will all have the master list of possibilities in our forum. It is just that Ska hasn't written it yet. To the MOC, great job! It is very convincing!- 19 replies

Coyle Shipping Co. February MRCA Escorted Trade runs
SkaForHire replied to Mike S's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I imagine within a year there will be some pretty famous trade routes, with some pretty infamous characters trying to disrupt them. -
Yeahhhh.... well, I am going to have to find a way for you guys to report monopolies and other oddities so that those are reflected.

Coyle Shipping Co. February MRCA Escorted Trade runs
SkaForHire replied to Mike S's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I am just going to put this here. This month, and going forward, after Mike, or whoever, sets up a thread like this to establish how a convoy will work, they can create the convoy in the form, give it a name, and all other ships traveling with the convoy just have to use that convoy's name in the MRCA form where it will say "name of convoy you are participating in" This should prevent any mixups. The EB thread with the convoys will serve as the final say on who is traveling with who. -
Not published in the newspaper. but those people's totals were updated.

Sea Rats: Sign-up and Discussion

One little correction to what I said earlier, Forts are different than other properties, like ships, these licenses are full price for everyone, and cannot be discounted by faction. -
If you really want to give it a shot, be my guest. I guess we can take this to a PM instead of here then.

Newspapers are notorious liars in this era... so it does not surprise me that they exaggerated the fate of the Appleseed. -

[ESL - MRCA End] : The end of the Appleseed
SkaForHire replied to Tezclatipoca's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Hold off on the registering the build until I fix the free build form to include a spot that says "MRCA build" I will let everyone know when it is fixed. It does not count against your free build limit. Really cool scene! I love the floating captain! -
I almost put "per ship" in there when I wrote it, but I think that is a balancing issue. Those who have enough money to own more ships would get more chances to MOC them. But.. .on the other end, since this is sort of a consolation prize for those who did not do well, I think it is merited. I think I would open it up and say that ANY builder that did not participate can MOC at least ANY ONE action, then those builders with ships can MOC once per ship. That way, at least everyone has access to the first 10DBs. This is not an official rule, until leadership talks about it though. I think the issue of quality may come into play also, so perhaps these MOCs will need approvals. Currently yes, I will probably create a special form for this, but if I don't be the end of month, you would just fill out another license form and then mail me saying that you are just upgrading so that I don't deduct the full price. (I assume I will be the one tallying next month) But, there are twice as many, or more, gazelle than cheatahs. The NPC traders were more than the PC traders this month. I did not include NPC on NPC stats in the account, it just was not important. It would be impossible, without a program, to run even more - it was a four hour calculation as it was. Then there is the write up that takes time. If I had a program where I could test tweaking numbers and rates, then it would be easier to make sweeping changes. On top of this, it is a game simulation, in simulations meant to be fun, you often see exaggeration of real life elements -- in this case the chance that a pirate takes a ship is greater. But, remember, the very small lost at sea game mechanic (10% then a 30% role) is MUCH smaller than real numbers of this age. Getting lost at sea was much more common than pirate attack, but is way less fun in a game situation than knowing you got attacked by pirates.

The merchant ships already have a low chance of meeting a pirate -- only 30%, and then the pirate has to catch them. If we brought those numbers down any further, there really wouldn't be a point in predator cruises. It would get rid of part of the game altogether.

The viper and white skull were the escorts, they were listed in the article, it may not have been clear that they were the actual escorts though. To your final points, again, this was more determined by the luck of the rolls. The ship that took the entire Sea Rats flotilla was the same level as the escorts. None of the larger NPC pirates were able to capture anything. Its luck mostly that made this turn out this way. An example of a single ship making a successful run, the Little Hermes made it through without an escort. (Although it stated it had one, the route for its escort was never set) On the current "normal setting" chart, there is only a 30% chance that a ship is intercepted. Then there is a "to catch" roll-off between to two ships, where speed comes in. Both of these rolls have to come up in favor of the predator before they even get to shoot. Once they shoot, there is a chance that nothing happens and they break off, a chance one side overwhelmingly wins, and a chance that there is a boarding action. If the latter, then the crews face off, and only after another successful roll, is the ship taken. I understand that the MRCA is a story driver, and I think people can make a go at it in many different ways. It is dangerous, but so was the Golden Age of Piracy. Escorted ships had a better chance to survive.

There were d3 traders as well in each zone +1 for every PC predator. \ The Sea Rat convoy was escorted (although not correctly written as so in most of the webforms). It really was catastrophic rolls for the Sea Rats that unfortunately doomed the convoy. And on the other end, the fleet of raiders missed their prey in speed rolls and lucky rolls to avoid intercept. It just wasn't a good month for the Sea Rats. On another note, the dice fell in favor of the royal warships this time, it could have went either way, there were actually two more large pirates that fought the royal warships, one was even boarded, but they ended up in a break off action each time. I didn't report all action in the newspaper thread. There was a lot of "outran a pirate" as a result, especially in the Corrington convoy that stretched 7 zones. The seas are difficult, but they are somewhat high return, even for a small ship willing to make a long run. This is one of the reasons that property is a good investment. It is much harder to lose value.

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Welcome Tokru! Over our long four years, we have had a few people start characters and towns that have been more Greco-Roman, but they have not stuck around through the long haul. There is one really beautiful MOC I am thinking of with a town scene on a hill side that was very reminiscent of Greece... OF course, with thousands of MOCs, I am not where to find it! We would welcome more Greek / Roman builds as we move forward! -
