The Flying Monkey (2nd post attempt)
Matteo1130 replied to Captain Braunsfeld's topic in Pirate MOCs
Nice and fun! wich brick did you use for the cannon? -
Nice, complete and fully playable! The only suggestion I would make is to remove the last lateen mast.

@Admiral Croissant: you're right. Checking again the Victory and the Grand Turk replica, in some pictures planks are looking very clear and I thought it was a sort of ruined white varnish (because of the color of internal sides and roof); my fault. This month I've to go to the marine museum in Genova, hope to collect as many information as possible there; unfortunately the Vespucci is sailing right now and I've to wait to see Her.. I'm starting bricklinking a reddish brown weather deck by the way...
-
Thanks Sebeus for your suggestion! According to my building instructions, I could make it these colors: white, red, reddish brown, black or grey. Tan is possible, with a lot of luck in finding pieces, but really expensive. Reddish brown may be the best choice.. but only if using a white gunline (or the moc would look too dark).
-
Hi all! I'm bricklinking a ship with a "classic" scheme: brown hull, black sides with a colored line for the guns. The gundeck is uncovered. I've seen a lot of white gundecks, but only in covered ones, could it be realistic a white uncevered gundeck? For example a white deck with dark red (or reddish brown) gunline on black sides? I'm asking it because, according with O'Brian's books, sailors were "sanding" with stones the deck every day, so I didn't know if a varnished top deck could be realistic.
-
I failed to read this before.. for old hull pieces I use an old "leo cad" version, they're available there and it's simple to use. I also made a cannon design time ago using that software, but it seems have been deleted from this forum.. so I can't show how a moc looks like, but it's very similar to this ship :)
-
Looking at some google images I think the shape in the stern is perfect "as is". The straight part near the stern may be adjusted by adding another gunport and changing the color of the gunline. The bow protrudes a bit with the hornet figurhead, but in the picture with the minifig is OK, 7-8 studs out of the hull. In this particular ship may look fine an headrailing "the perfectionist style". The only thing I don't like is the red color of the deck.. was it realistic?
-
This is a very nice corvette, does it have any internals? edit: was it right that color scheme? :)
-
Wow.. clean and very elegant.

I think nuestra senora is great.. but this galleon is great too, in a different way. It's a good thing to see different styles in this brick sea ;) In this I love the overall finish of the bow, details on the deck, crow's nest in the bowsprit. The only thing I would change are just cosmetics: on the bow there are no access to the bowsprit from gundeck, for example here: http://www.mocpages....434/13718035921 I tried (inspired by Sebeus's small ships) to make a couple minifig illusion accesses and I think they could look great on this galleon too...even if, I have to say, I don't know if that could be historically correct.
-
Yes, it is an optical illusion: the back is specaular to the front except por the missing gundeck.. it will be with the same shape :) the lasts 6 studs look straighter because they stop decreasing in width, but increases in tallness.. I'm planning to place here the side galleries of the stern.
-
New pictures/upgrades: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/362883 I think the legth/width is ok, the back part may look thin because of the lack of the gundeck and sides.. and the overall length may increase depending on the shape of the stern.
-
Understood, I'll try to make this: This evening I'll try to finish the central (the largest) part of this moc and get a couple pictures of the gundeck section in that point, so we could see if the illusion in proportions is acceptable. Hope to make a picture like "the eyes of a minifig" looking from the main mast to the bow.. but I'm not much as a photographer.
-
I think the lenght is ok, to make any example: a frigate with 5 midsections is about 66 studs long and generally 18 studs wide. 8 mids give a lenght of 90 studs, I made a 22 studs width, but the particular design of the sides makes them protrude another stud each side. Now, 66/18=3,7 and 90/24=3,75 so the proportions are nearly the same (birdseye). Considering the sideview, my gunline is accessible by folding the sides and is tall enough for a standing minifig, even if wearing an hat.. but this makes the hull very high and I had to make it longer to mantain proportions, when it was 7 mids long the ship looked very short (sidewiew) and very fat (birdseye).
-
Wow, are you using them for a strategy game?
-
It was my first page on mocpages, so the staff had to verify the contents.. it tooks just a few hours. The midsections are 8, for 14 gunports each side, building the stern is something I didn't already started; the stern is the most important detail to give a ship her look, so I can't take a decision between a '700 look, like ships from EB Pirates or a much modern look "Vesta style".

The new bow: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/362883 Edit: (once public)
-
Yes, the bowsprit on your pictures seems "floating", in a ship it would sink into the bow. You may try to build a bowcastle and hide the bowsprit connection into it.. Edit: Don't be afraid to rebuild :) My main project is a WIP since September 2009, I can't say how many times I've completely destroyed and rebuilt it from a 5 small midsection hull into a 8 large midsections.. have fun!

@Sebeus: I can't wait for your tutorial!! @Milo: welcome! First I have to make my compliments with you, because you already have a ship made by your own (I don't), second I would like to make some basic tip: look at the master index (moc, sorted by type) and you'll get some interesting idea how to make a realistic look saving money, because you need a lot of pieces to create, but a lot less if you have some idea of the final shape. This doesn't mean you have to copy 100%, but you might like the bow from a ship, the stern from another or the sides ecc.. Looking at your moc: Looking at the shape you made I think you may change it in a beliavable galleon in a few steps: lowering the stern you can use those pieces to rise the sides and the gunline at least a couple bricks, You may also put the center mast in the place of the foremast, the backmast is good looking in that place and place the actual thin foremast on the stern. By this way, with the center and the foremast square rigged and the backmast with a lateen triangular sail you have an historically correct galleon. Obviously: IMHO. But you have a GOOOOOD start here

Nice overall shape, I love the way you made an USC style keeping the minifig illusion scale. The basement is GREAT, I mean: somebody (me too) starts considering the work "finished" by finishing the hull of the ship, but a so detailed basement means you had cure on the entire creation. My favourite part is the headrails attachment idea: the brickbuilt part; I absolutely love also the "Perfectionist's" style because the way it looks, but I still rather bricks (but this is an IMHO).

Best creation since now IMHO.

I like the way he made the sails and the door, the brickbuilt midsection is a nice feature to make the full grey hulls longer, but in that case I'd go for the 50950 piece :) Great work by the way!

I also rather playability than historic perfection. Having space to move minifig inside is a nice feature, but IMHO this makes the ship a few too high considering its lenght. You may save playability and realism lowering a few the tallness of the gundeck, I guess it wasn't unusual for a ship to have a gundeck a bit lower than a standing person... Nice work by the way! Edit. comments are for the actual picture, in case you want to make her longer, like in the LDD, all I may say is "great work"!

Wow, great job! This MOC looks made by an expert!! Nice overall lines, I like the way you made the rigging support on the mast and the sails
