New member, need some tricks of the trade.
Matteo1130 replied to AllezLesBleusPX's topic in LEGO Pirates
First: welcome here, nice to hear you!! Second: Uhm.. are you sure? Even in a minifig illusion scale this would be a colossal MOC. I tried myself to make a big MOC for the first attempt and the result is: a MOC that hold still at 2/3 from completion from a long time. In the meanwhile I've made lots of little side-projects. My suggestion is to start with something little, you can finish in a short time and with a little amount of pieces. This way you may gratify yourself with a completed project then walk into something harder, and so on... BUT I'm not the one with the best MOCs in here, neither the one with the highest number, so this is just a suggestion; other MOCers may find it wrong. Enough said, good work and have fun! Edit: little is different from simple. In a little thing you may add lots and lots of details. -
Brethren of the Brick Seas?
Matteo1130 replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I don't even know what this is -
Apparently this MOC comes just in time, considering the post I wrote elsewhere: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=98453 In your shoes I would try a "flint's walrus" images search Maybe with a balcony on the stern and opening part of the weather deck...

Modern Pirate TV Series - Black Sails & Crossbones

For what I've seen the Walrus (Flint's ship) has an old fashion look, half frigate and half galleon. This is a moc I woul really like to see! -
Modern Pirate TV Series - Black Sails & Crossbones
Matteo1130 replied to Matteo1130's topic in LEGO Pirates
I miht have been misunderstood in my last post. What I meant is that in a few months tv screens in the world shown two different pirates themed series from two different producers and a major group is working on another film of a succes branded pirates theme. This means the public strongly loves pirates thesedays and hopefully TLG may ride this trend. It would be great some re-release or support of current projects such as the haven guard or so. -
When I say "playable" I didn't intend her as a toy: me and a few friends are working on a rule system to play with napoleonic era ships :) Nice to build them, but nicier to command them against other players!!

The ship, as is, looks pretty much like an early 700 frigate. To turn her into a galleon there is a lot of work to be done.. first you have to separate bowcastle and sterncastle by demolishing the middle part of the weather deck., then the overall look has to be rounded, bowsprit pointing higher and possibly with a crows nest. To me she's beautiful just the way she is, like a frigate..

Love the playability! Very lego-ish. She's just a few short/tall (to me), but this is simply adjustable by changing into darker tone the lower lines of tiles in the hull, and rising a couple bricks the seacutter, this will rise also the hedarails and the overall look will gain. Edit: About the ship type, the royal navy classification says "ship", because of the three square rigged masts, but not "frigate" because of the few guns to be a warship (then an HMS). First you have to know, lego don't necessary deserve realism, but if you WANT it you may simple call her "Elisa" as a merchant ship armed for defense, or reduce the number of masts from three to two and make her a "Brig" with a realistic armory :) To me? This is perfect as "HMS Elisa" because, I like realism, but I like more the LEGO style.

Modern Pirate TV Series - Black Sails & Crossbones
Matteo1130 replied to Matteo1130's topic in LEGO Pirates
This could not be a problem outside US/UK, because of the others languages version. By the way we loose all the peculiarity and accents wich says "I'm from that place and ,you know, my peaple used to be like this and/or we are part of that subculture". To the "crossbones" series, I can't wait to see her too, hungry for pirates theme Hope a couple TV Series and rumors about POTC V will make TLG thinking about releasing new sets, or according with EB the production of the "haven guard" project!! I'm definitively interested in little pirates sets.. -

Ambassador Project - Haven Guard Flag & Torso Designs
Matteo1130 replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
Your comment on the 2 x 2 flag is really clever,I didn't thought about it. By the way I'm absolutely sure of the reason of my vote, not just for the look :) -
Determine the Haven Guard Flag - VOTE NOW!
Matteo1130 replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
I don't know if I could vote or not... but this is (to me) the best flag for a lot of reasons: White background with the two thin dk orange lines and the muskeet pattern. -
Modern Pirate TV Series - Black Sails & Crossbones
Matteo1130 replied to Matteo1130's topic in LEGO Pirates
I see.. now I've just to wait until september. Since we're talking about this: is there any other tv serie that worth to be watched? (The only I already know is Hornblower) Edit: yes, the series is called "Black Sails" and not "Black Flag" (my mistake), but I can't change topic title, sorry. -
AXN channel will show the next month the "black sails" TV series, apparently based on a pirate theme... anyone seen it? Hope it could come somehow inspirating for MOCs!Official website | Pilot on YouTube http://youtu.be/ZFWAb5GAbzU

Everything is spectacular. I just rather small hulls for brigs.. but this is absolutely IMHO. Excellent work!

I'm finding myself in a "galleon" period.. This is really well made!

The more I look it, the more I like it. In case you'll make a tutorial with this building technique, I'm interested!

Just for reference: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/362883 I compared 3 studs as 1meter, as a minifig is slightly shorter than 6 studs.. this way, even if I placed 28 guns on the main gundeck, according to some wikipedia reference, the overall size is of a 10~12brig. The discussion you linked is absolutely helpful!! :) ...and I have also to agree about the falcon's comment... Edit. I finally found all of the photos I made inside and outside the replica galleon Neptune from Polanski's pirates. It would be nice to learn how to use ldd and try something...

I'm not sure about leaving prefab hulls. It could be ok in a minifig scale, but this also requires brickbuilt bow and stern. In a minifig illusion scale the using of prefabs recalls a nice LEGOish genuine design that could be ruined by mixing bow/stern/mids with brickbuilt sections, imho. About the minifig scale: it is hard to measure it. For example I'm making a frigate 24 studs wide and 8 mids long, it's mostly half the size of the pretended minifig scale, but looks oversized the same, due to the sproportion in the minifig look. Excuse me for the poor english..
-
I see. It would be too nice :) Hope it will be possible in the future, I don't think I will ever make a copy from this ship, since I rather other periods ships.. but this moc deserves a better look!
-
Excuse me for this question but my english is not that good... ldd means I could see the building project of this ship?! This would be great.. (just in case.. how?)
-
Wow. Great ship and great diorama. Love all of it!
-
@KB: the (beautiful) diorama is far from what I was searching, because there are so much baseplates.. but you helped me very much suggesting those shops and places. @Sebeus: horry's colony could be a great start, I may just build similar buildings separately and connect them with technic pins.. this way with the same mocs it's possible to alternate different patterns to reproduce different villages. P.S. the "top" would be the sharing of those instructions, so any member could reproduce those villages and, since I'm working on comic purpose, any member could write on the same comic if inspired!
-
Hi all, hope I'm writing in the right section! I'm trying to build somekind of a modular village/harbor to be used with prefab hull ships for play/display/comics. I know there are some beautiful land based MOCs in this forum, but they're really different from what I'm trying, because they're huge, complex and too detailed. I would like to mix old school/few pieces design with some new building technique... like old official LEGO sets, but slightly less "naif", like a lot of mini-sets designed for AFOLs instead of kids, to be connected to make different villages. To make an example: a house could not have more than three walls (enough in the lego world!), stereotyped rooms ecc.. or a shop may have the classic red/blue slope tent What I would like is suggestions about the "kits" I need. Dock sections? a simple tavern? a fish shop? a little guard's station and.. what else? Thanks for reading!
