The engine and tender both have a good look to them. I particularly like the "curved everywhere" on the tender, and the yellow stripe adds a nice touch. The locomotive is very clean too, a good looker. Should you improve it? Only if you want to. It is odd to see a locomotive with its own coal bunker also pull a tender. As a train head I would think either go without the tender or go without the coal bunker. If you went without the tender I bet you could make a nice self-contained engine with a circuit cube bluetooth motor set. If you modified the locomotive to eliminate the on-board coal bunker, by the end of that endeavor it would be a completely different build. So nothing wrong keeping it as is. Well... okay... there is one thing, the gap between the engine and tender seems too large. What if you moved the cab back 1 stud (without changing the cab or coal bunker) so that it is above the buffer beam; then extend the tender 1 stud forward and 1 stud back just to make the gaps smaller. Oh, and clever trick using a rocker for the connecting rods instead of a piston

Union Pacific FEF-3 #844: The Living Legend
zephyr1934 replied to AbleChristopher's topic in LEGO Train Tech
That's some amazing work, the 844 looks great! All sorts of clever solutions abound. You hint at working magic on the centipede tender, very curious what you did. Congrats on a fantastic build!- 39 replies

Indeed, good deal for buyers but it doesn't speak well of the OE set or the prospect of any more AFOL trains coming soon. On sale during peak shopping 1 yr after release suggests lackluster sales.

That's the pits! Seriously though, the pits turned out well (that pun was unintended). I've seen real service pits that aren't much deeper than the ones in your model (rails at shoulder height) so you're safely prototypical (grin). Great little improvements abound.

I like the way you are mixing very 80's parts and aesthetics with modern parts and aesthetics. Actually, that part's predecessor only came in red and green There are two variants, the other has a higher hole in front..

Great work, as a kid I drooled over the 12v system, the height of functionality and train availability. While the MOC's are wonderful, probably my favorite bit is your avatar and the corresponding artwork at the top of your first post (which you already hinted that the MOC will be coming soon). The stylizing of the of the artwork is great.

Looking good. FWIW, BBB offers x-small wheels, which I think are one plate smaller in diameter than the normal train wheels.

Amazing work! So many great details both from back in the day and from the modern era. And who doesn't enjoy a train "almost colliding" with its rear as it goes through a crossover (grin)

If you ask around someone you know might have an old iphone 8 or similar obsolete android phone that no longer has a sim that you could leave plugged in and hidden in the display

so far we are only talking about existing trains. I'd think the 2025 thread should start either at the hints of future trains or come Jan 1 if we are still talking existing trains.

MOCs: Models of trains running in Hungary

First things first, you really should marry that girlfriend of yours. I doubt you could find a better woman. Meanwhile, the station looks amazing (even if I say that with every iteration, it's still true). But it is true on so many levels- the detailing in the lego building, the detailing in the operational sense, and the details in the details (e.g., the storage yard with the partially removed switches). -
Even if the rumors are accurate about Lego's current plans, Lego can change plans, e.g., I think the tree house was slated to be discontinued a few years ago but it is still in the Idea's line up. Some disappear quickly others stick around for years, presumably it all depends on how well they sell.

According to the reliable insider in my club, the train station and freight train (60335 and 60336) are scheduled to be discontinued at the end of this calendar year and the passenger train (60337) and Orient Express (21344) are scheduled to be discontinued at the end of 2025. All rumors but I'd give them greater than 50% probability of being true.

Top notch work, as always. And the rendered garbage train looks just like the real things except that your walls are a lot cleaner (grin)

Oh, the old Algoma Central is it? A great choice of roads to build (I've never been there but it always looks amazing in the photos). I have seen the Ski Train cars though, they've got the unusual disc brakes on the outside of the trucks, but that should make it easier for you to do custom wheels since you don't need a truck frame on the outside. Doing that with either standard technic axle train wheels or roller bearing wheels, you could replace the 6x28 train base with a single layer of normal plates and lower the top of the cars by one plate. The build looks good. Snotted cheese bricks can also give a nice F40 nose in 6 wide, but then that messes up the striping (you can't have it all). Is the dark gray underframe critical to the locomotive? If not, that might be a spot to shorten the height. As it stands, the cars look well proportioned for keeping them to the train bases. I like the steps, I wonder though, what would the cars look like if you lowered the door window by one plate?

TRAIN TECH Help, General Questions & Talk to the Staff
zephyr1934 replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
In the name of full disclosure, in some sets Lego does specify to cut their hose down to size and I've heard some lego purists say they would never use 3rd party hosing. Disclaimers aside, the following thread holds answers, enter the dark side at your own risk (insert evil laughter here)- 578 replies

[MOC] Northern Pacific A4 4-8-4 #2678
zephyr1934 replied to thesnoqualmieroute's topic in LEGO Train Tech
The LDraw parts themselves are actually on brickshelf and can be found here. You will need to download the entire s-folder and the individual rods you want. All of the files are actually text files even though the extension is .dat. When you click on one of the .dat files in your browser it might display the text file rather than download it. That's fine, once open just save "the page" from your browser or copy/paste the text into a new text file. Just make sure you keep the original name including the .dat extension. Then if you use Stud.io, see the installation instructions here. -

Indeed, I've done out to 31.5 studs long rods. I don't think I got a picture of that one, but here's a 27 stud long rod If you want to talk custom rods just drop me a comment on trainedbricks.com, just keep in mind that it could take several weeks to do a custom rod. -
