Just rechecked the build pictures: the two U-joints on either end of the grey axle in the right of the fifth image down aren't synced up correctly. You might want to fix this before moving on, @Ctan.

This does explain the green beams and elements in 42080... oh wait, no it doesn't.

This looks like a really cool build! I like Olav's style and I think I'd enjoy this... if I had the 50ft display case @Ctan obviously had the foresight to make room for.

Grum's Shed
Maaboo the Witch replied to grum64's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wow. Turns out 8258 is one of only three Technic sets to incorporate the polarity switch. -
The phrase "jumped the gun" is wholly inadequate for this topic. Seriously though, I'm interested to see how your solutions will work on the real model.

Well, at least I got us back on topic. Unless everyone was okay with the availability discussion? 'Cause I'd swim to Denmark right now to grab a 42081! Maybe throw in the forklift as well.

Neither do I. What's to stop their employees from going to Billund and obtaining these sets? TLG's logic is out the window here. Anyway, steering us back to 42082, it's really really big! Discuss.

PF components in general seem to smell like that, or so I've noticed; the remotes from 42065 and 42070 especially do. I guess it's because they're being made with a newer material, or at another production facility.

42042 battery box can go both directions. You mean 42055.

My reservations about 42082 are mainly centred on the functions. It clearly has a buttload of ABS to haul about and some of the functions look too slow or clumsy, like the jerky slewing. I mean, the speed of the outriggers! Fwah. There's a lot of hate for 42070 (a lot of which is justified, trust me) but its outriggers are so fleet and effective, with a slower motor to boot!

This set just isn't for me. It's ages of building for a few seconds of play. But there are loads of car nuts out there who'll love it. I'll wait for 42081. Great review! Always a pleasure to read.

Thing is, TLG were so preoccupied with the fact that they can that they didn't stop to think whether or not they should...

It doesn't do much more in effect than 8270, and yet it's the biggest Technic set ever. TLG could have picked something more off-the-wall like the BWE. At least the B-model is something new.

Notably, the music on the 42082 video is a piece called "Redwood Trail" rather than the usual Technic soundtrack for this year.

And here's the rub: why make it so big? The BWE is understandable as it does a whole hell of a lot, but a model like this - much less so. I like all the extra features and build techniques but 42082 just seems huge for the sake of huge. I'm not denying that it's mighty impressive, though.
