lego is not meant to be played outside - or have you ever seen an advertisment of TLG outside? In contrary: often lego warns that the parts are not usebale or sufficiant for by played outside... And inside your sunlight argument is completely useless. Also the range: For playling around with the reachable (and by TLG for their official models intended!) speed IR satisfies. real RC eats batteries at breakfast and is mostly a toy for adults. Do not expect lego to make such a long-term and important design decision for adults - they have to be done for their target audience: kids kids and again kids - for them the current IR-system is quite perfect. I can really imagine the bunch of complaints at amazon from parents who moan that a battery pack lasts just 30 min when a model would be provided with real RC components... it has happend e.g. for models like 8366... this one and its "colleagues" were really no bestsellers and moneymakers.... Just my 2 ct. i agree completely - very well spoken... nothing prevents talented builders to design such (btw: really admirable and sometimes really outstanding) MOCs but TLG would be really foolish if they would release something like this...

One recommendation to the 8466 vs 8458 question. With no doubt the 4x4 is by far the more interesting set. For a formula one i would either buy 8461 ( which is 99% identical but has the modern panels and has therefore smoother lines) or the 8674 Ferrari which is acomplete different build because completely studdless ( and it is designed by one of my favorite designer/builder ever: nat Kuipers) Recommend. to 8466: you MUST apply Designer Han's steering MOD (very simple and cheap but nevertheless essential for good steering or better playability Performance) and you must replace the shocks with the harder ones from the Unimog 8110 because the original ones are way to weak at least ob the front axle (BTW. Han's MOD is Not a full redesign but just a quite simple but Important mod on the front axle - it needs about a hand Full of extra parts and enhances also the suspension geometry)

Many many thanks for offering this very high quality BI! Awesome model -
I second the HoF vote! I followed your WIP thread in the german forum. Very impressive final result which easily belongs to the Top 5 Real supercars i have ever seen because a perfect symbiosis of function and form. You have admirable building skills! May i ask you if it is possible to share the LDD?

Technic General Discussion

8461 yes 8674 no: 8641 is the really 99,9% the same as 8458 just with the new panels (BTW: therefore i like the williams more because IMHO the old panels make the 8458 looking too jagged) But 8674 is a complete New and complete studdless design whereas 8458 and 8461 have an internal structure made with studded beams. The Ferrari has also other freatures whereas the older ones are really identical. IMHO the Suspension of the Mercedes and the Williams is too weak (front) whereas the ferrari suspension works a little bit better at the front axle So my favorites are the Williams and the Ferrari. I have cannibalized the 8458 for the ninja supercar of nat Kuipers which is made of the two sets 8466+8458.... -
here is mine (as described in the linked postings it is strongly inspired by the solutions of eurobricks members barman and tripletschiee): http://www.eurobrick...75#entry1939279 here the detail photo pics: http://bricksafe.com...ide tilting bed do not know if it is the best possible way (probably not), but here is again mine: and if you want RC + tipping bed you have probably not another chance - at least you can not apply the typical approach shown in this thread... anyway, here is my approach... decide for yourself if it can satisfy your needs... posting: http://www.eurobrick...00#entry1970587 (and some before) pics: http://bricksafe.com.../Remote Control

Top 14 of 2014
Kumbbl replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
He is surely One of the most talented builder i know. Especially the mobile crane with its 4 section Boom (at this scale!) is incredible but also the dump truck is outstanding... I would die for BI of this mobile crane... Back to topic: always Hard to compile a bestof list... This One is a Good list and i'm sure the OP has thought about it a lot... But of course every other builder will miss some other highlights. I for myself would indeed add the F40 but also the kenworth Truck of juergen - to mention only two missing expamples. The Ferrari Spider of brunoj would be another candidate, at least for the shortlist... -
Just finished this ultimate mobile crane: Juergen: kudos to you for this awesome model   - IMHO it's more a MOC than a MOD... and it is very well designed, you have admirable building and designing skills - i had really much fun when building it - the resulting model works like a charm and performs very well - the XL has no problems to drive this heavy model. Great playability (in contrary to the original crane which has mediocre playability). Cause of the plethora of additional PF-stuff it is a very expensive MOD but IMHO it is worth every cent. Strong recommendation for all owners of the 42009 Nevertheless i have applied some small MODs to this MOD: 1. (the most prominent one): i have replaced RC-ing of the outriggers by two PF-switches: I did this mostly to save one receiver and one sender (which are more important for other cool MOCs ;-). And IMHO this fits better the real live usage, because normally the crane driver operates the outriggers with a cable remote control...you think this is a contradiction? no, IMO it isn't: The lego RC is the replacement for the driver in the crane cabins whereas the lego PF-switches simulates the outrigger cable remote control of the real machine. Anyway: the two switches are very easy to integrate - just one important remark: on the pic above you see that the switches are in a row with the receiver (in the backward direction); this is important because otherwise (if they would be in a row in the frontward direction) they would be one stud longer backward than the receiver and would therefore prevent the crane from endless slewing! for this see also 4. below 2. slightly longer engine bay so the receiver, the switches and the cables are better "hidden": 3. fix for the part-collision problem described some postings above: In the original design this yellow pin connector collides with the DBG 24th gear which drives the LAs. IMHO this is an illegal design. my fix above eliminates the problem - at least there is no parts collision anymore (but i assume the design would still be judged illegal by lego) - aynway: now it works. 4. i have mounted the crane one stud backward - this can be done very easily: This ensures that the crane can not touch the cables at the receiver and the switches of the truck when slewing more >= 180 degree. This is already useful with the original 2 receiver design of the truck but with my switches replacement it is essential because the cables of the switches needs slightly more space... anyway: it has no costs, it is easy and it has no disadvantages. 5. adding some more support for the heavy crane and its mounting plate: 6. some small fixes: - better bracing og the orange L-motor for boom extraction: 7. fixing a bug: That's it. All of these MODs a very small and light. But nevertheless they slightly improve an already excellent model. (all pics can be found in my bricksafe folder: http://bricksafe.com... RC mobile crae) Conclusion: Thank you Juergen for this awesome MOD which hauls up the crane to another and much higher level. And also thank you for the perfect instructions which gives you a very enjoyable building experience.

i like your experiment - IMHO this approach increases usabilty and builability by lxf-fle enormously (because the auto. generated step-by-step-BI by LDD of a full model are in 99% crap)... now quite as easy as if build from professional pdf instructions... i would highly appreciate this approach if it is not too much effort for you... thanks a lot!

i have build and tested both alternatives: a) steering with M-motor in cabin: advantage: slightly more suspension travel + working steering wheel (which is driven by the same m-motor) --> this is the solution i have finally used b) steering with servo-motor on the front axle: advantage: simpler design, disadvantage: no working steering wheel possible, slightly less suspension travel from a single steering viewpoint both versions work great - overall i prefer a (M-Motor in the cabin)

Flagships: The good and the not so
Kumbbl replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes it seems so. How good they could be can be seen at some awesome c-models as e.g.: Tow Truck of 8258 by MrTekneex Truck of 42009 by MrTekneex Hot Rod of 42000 by Nat Kuipers All of them are way better models than the official b-models... For the first and the third there exist BI - strong recommendation because they are very enjoying builds and great designs... -

Kumbbl replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Your mentioned 8880 Set has IMHO One of the best B-models. A really well designed and cute Indy racecar...Same fir the 8485 , the t-Rex is even better than the a-model... The Buggy of 8479 is Not huge, has Not many functions, Not many parts, no complex geartrains but nevertheless it is One of my favorite b-models... The b-model of the 9397 logging Truck is also very very good... -
IMHO the best place for battery is inside the cabin - but it requires the Lipo-Battery 8878 (rsp. the 88000 AAA Box)! it fixes the left-lean-problem and has in addition the advantage, that you can implement a tilting bed, which is a very nifty addon to the unimog. Placing the battery at the bed prevents from tilting the bed.... Here you can find more informations about my Unimog RC approach: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=57543&st=1700#entry1970587 http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=57543&st=1700#entry1964626 detailed pics for all MODS: http://bricksafe.com/pages/Kumbbl/MODs/8110%20Unimog

[REVIEW] 42025 Cargo Plane

Sorry, no offense at all but i can Not believe this 2 hours. Maybe if you have carefully presorted ALL parts, then MAYBE. But unsorted fresh from the bags, i highly doubt that it is possible to build this model in just 2 hours...
