[MOC] Mini Demolition Excavator
D3K replied to D3K's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks everyone, I'm glad you liked it! As promised, here is the LDD file, if anyone wants to build it (or just have a look at how it's put together) It measures in at 610 pieces +/- two track links (getting them just right is not an easy task) I have grouped the chassis and superstructure separately for ease of viewing. There should also be a small rubber band between the two red parts on the claw. The red parts in question should of course be black- 11 replies

Hi! After completing my Swingloader Mk III, I haven't had a lot of time to build something big, so I tried my hands on something small instead. I made this a couple of days ago, trying to get a lot of technical (albeit simple) features into a small package! I tried to make it a scale comparable to that of this years' constructon crew set, and here it is next to that set's excavator Most of the features are explained in the next picture, except the second stage of the dipper, which is lifted manually. Here is an underside shot, showing the track extending mechanism. Not the sturdiest of designs, but more than enough. Higher resolution images can be found in my Bricksafe folder I will be making an LDD file, if anyone is interested.. Lastly, I actually made a video BEFORE making the topic, so here you go, showing all features (I think)

MOC Sharing Dilemma
D3K replied to Cumulonimbus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think it should be up to the individual to what extent he or she want's to share a design of their own.. while some share detailed pictures, some go the extra mile and spend hours making instructions (whether it be to sell or give away), some might not even want to show a picture of their work.. While making a never before seen solution to a problem, one might feel a form of "ownership" over said solution, and maybe one won't be willing to share it with anyone.. luckily, most times in these forums at least, solutions are shared, and that is IMO one of the great things about this hobby; the exchange of experiences and ideas. We have seen Chinese websites selling other peoples' instructions (even those that are initially made free to the public), and of ourse it shouldn't be that way, but I guess it's inevitable.. And there are far worse things beeing copied in China than some simple MOC instructions, to put it mildly!! I would like to say this though; while you get a nice feeling of success for coming up with a solution or design in a MOC, that feeling is multiplied tenfold when other people can try your design, agree with you on it's ingenuity, or maybe suggest a solution to that one, tiny detail you felt was wrong in your design but couldn't quite figure out! -

Pretty brilliant! Like you say, making something negligible is not making something go away! -
Large Technic Sets
D3K replied to Phantom59's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
If you think of width, or actual floorspace taken up by a single model, I think it could very well be 42025.. If you think of height, then probably 42009, with extended boom.. Length? Maybe 8285 B-model ? -
All of them looking fantastic, would love to see them built in real bricks!

Sarcasm related to LEGO Technic
D3K replied to PhyBuilder's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I second that! I also never get out of bed in the middle of the night, pull out my big box of Technic, and try to realize an idea I just had semi conciously when trying to sleep! -
My experience at Brick Slopes 2014

Looks like a nice event! Great that you shared your pictures! And I agree; that helicarrier looks awesome! -
I'm pretty sure that if someone on the forum is in posession of some news worth sharing, they would do so in this very topic EDIT: And there is still a dedicated 42030 topic where I think it would be less frowned upon if you want to continue asking "any news yet?" Like Error404 says in the post below, everytime someone posts something useless in this topic and it lights up on top of the forum, we all think there are some actual news..

I think moderator has to do it..? by the way I caught a glimpse of the entire vehicle before the picture was swapped with just one of just the wheel, would love to see some more details!

Please delete one of the two indentical topics, or merge this one with this one Also, wela, I would consider using a picture upload site, like bricksafe.com... or you'll soon end up asking "why can't I upload more pictures to Eurobricks?" On topic: the design looks interesting

D3K replied to gsia17's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Looks great! I like the motors setup! Was literally just watching (as in, there is a commercial break now) a show where someone goes into the Nevada Desert to drive one of these, and I thought it would be a cool MOC to build in the future! -
The 42009 is a great starting point, I would say! Depending on what kind of MOCs you want to eventually build, there are a lot of nice sets. Personally I would recommend 8043 if you can still get it at a reasonable price, as it has the PF stuff, tracks, LA's, and seeing as the 42009 is yellow, it brings more parts that will come to good use in your MOCs. I am personally at a point now where I think I have most of the parts I'll ever need, as I usually only keep a single MOC built at a time. The only things I'd buy are specialized parts and the occational newly released useful parts. But in the beginning, if you start to build a MOC, and see that you for example need some new wheels, some technical parts (gears etc), and more parts of a given colour, I would try to find a set that has many of those features, compared to just buying the exact parts you need

Technic in 'Non-Toy' Applications
D3K replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I made a holder for my phone, mountable on a starndard tripod quick detatch mount, very useful for both photos and video I also made a foldable stand for my girlfriend's iPad, to use before I bought her a smartcover. It works great, and folds flat just two studs thick I also know Sariel made several Technic GoPro adaptors EDIT: The tripod phone mount: -

[Help] Teaser and Hood Problems
D3K replied to unimog123's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Irecently made a very effective pushrod suspension for small to medium sized cars, exactly to get a lover profile hood, give me a minute or two, and I'll make a quick LDD of it if you are interested EDIT: This is exactly the way I have it in a MOC now, just to show the actual suspension setup. While this works perfect for my MOC (small racecar), it migh not be ideal for other vehicles. But it can easily be modified by changing the width of the axle, changing the length of the 2L red half liftarms (to allow more or less travel, etc), and of course by using different strengths and lenghts of shocks. Like I said, the main advantage of this idea, is that it fits underneath a relatively low profile bonnet!
