[MOC] Iveco Skip Loader
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I tried all the options for this and the DuraStar. The 5.5 axles leave only 1/2 stud to hold the outside tires. Using the part you listed and two 1/2 bushes works, but the wheels are pretty wobbly since they are only supported by one stud. And at times still pulls out from the diff. And since the diff is not fully braced you get skipping with the bevel gear. Playability drops which is not the best solution just for a differential. I'll keep working on finding a solution for this scale, but this is the best I have found. I encourage others to find a better option as well. There are lots of applications for a good solution here. @tom1 I tend to make instructions for most of my MOCs, but when I am ready to take them apart. So it may take a little time before they are ready.- 23 replies

Technic General Discussion

Nope. But I'll start checking daily now. If I remember from the Chiron and Leibherr, the new parts became available a couple days later. -
[MOC] Iveco Skip Loader
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks all for your praise. @grego18f @I_Igor a differential will fit, but nothing keeps the axles from coming out of the differential while driving. Using two axles with stops keep both tires on both sides firmly connected to the truck.- 23 replies

My post from The Pub. I saw this morning that Bricklink.com was acquired by TLG, and my mouth hit the floor. While many of us can list the set that brought us out of the dark ages, for me, it was Bricklink, so I am a little apprehensive about this change. Bricklink has opened up this hobby to me, and has allowed me to do a number of MOCs. I hope moving forward, this acquisition will will not be too disruptive to element acquisition.. I will say, that in the last two years, I have bought more pieces directly from TLG as their Replacement Bricks site gets better. While there are some organizations issues that Bricklink does better, maybe this change will help them provide improved access to new and used elements.

42108 - Mobile Crane
Thirdwigg replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's my guess too. It seems the ratchet is to keep it from sliding back down since I cannot see a worm gear for extension. It seems like an odd workaround, but I guess it would work. -

Looks great. I also can't believe we are seeing a Technic structure in 4 studs wide. I love the weirdness of that. -
Lego 42098 Car Transporter Mods
Thirdwigg replied to SNIPE's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@johnnym yeah the doors were one of those time I found myself saying "come on LEGO, this is too easy not to include in the set." -
Great job, and a fine entry to the contest. You did a great job keeping the spirit of 8081, while taking it to a new place. I love the roof rack, and the interior detailing. The removable front gives a great view of the mechanicals, and the gold bars work great as an engine cover.

Lego 42098 Car Transporter Mods
Thirdwigg replied to SNIPE's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
My attempt at a MOD for this little car. Features steering, opening doors, rear suspension, and some simple bodywork changes. Enjoy. -
@steph77 I'll get instructions up for this at some point, but the stepper will not be in version 1.0. Maybe I'll add one in later, and see if there is a good way to make it look OK. Glad you like the design.
-
@Rudivdk, I think I found a good solution. Let me know what you think. Ok, I am about done. The rear bumper and lights are final and set. The bodywork is all placed and adequately reinforced. But I keep second guessing the front headlights and the panels above them. So what's your vote? Top or bottom, or some other option?
-
Looks great @johnnym. I am glad my axles were helpful in your modification. I like the slant back version of your truck, but the heads of the rear seat occupants may be a little uncomfortable.

Not much as changed since the last post, but the hard points within the chassis have all be finalized. The final version should come together pretty quickly now. The seats and dashboard are now final. Below you can see the changeover gear (tan) for the four speed gearbox. It's not flashy or groundbreaking, but as noted above, it keeps the body work how I wanted. It is easily accessed from the open hood/bonnet or under the car (when it's flying). One part I do not like is the front bumper being supported by only two liftarms. It's still a little wobbly, so I will try to stiffen that up.
-
Nope. Particularly with cars, after I nail down the internal features and a general chassis, I place the external panels and bodywork generally where I want it as I go. Since the exterior is the hardest part for me, I don't trust myself to finalize all the internal structure for the external parts as this may change. So the inside ends up being a mess when the MOC gets close to completion. When I am satisfied with the body work, I will start over to rebuild the chassis in the best way that has all the parts for the body work needed. The mess MOC stays to the side as a template, while final MOC gets finished in a comprehensive way.

[MOC] Claas Atos
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have completed instructions for this tractor. You may find the album here. I guess it took me a while to disassemble it because I was having so much fun playing with it. Enjoy. -
Hmm, right after a bump comment, but I have finally completed instructions for this helicopter. If you want to build it, or if they are helpful for ideas, you may find the gallery here.

For no other reason than I think they look funny. I get their application, and they are a neat use of parts, but I still love the look and function of the piston, crankshaft, and connecting arm parts.
-
Fear not @Lipko, shifter flaps did not make the final cut. Not on the steering wheel, and not under the front hood as I was working on. While a changeover would fit ahead of the front axle, and having a mechanism to actuate with a finger took too much away from the look of the car. I have settled on a simple gear that you may access by opening the hood. It keeps the lines clean, and you can still change the gears well. @johnnym The 3T car was 1657 parts, and this should be a little less than that. Maybe 1300 or so. Glad you like it so far @TechnicRCRacer Sorry I don't have something more current as both cars are in a period of transition, but here is a photo that will give you a good idea of some of the design progression. I'm still not sold on the taillights, and the area over the side windows, but I'll get there soon.
-
I am back to this project. The frame is about done, and I have finalized the bodywork. Here is the rolling chassis.
-
Finally made a front counterweight. I think it's only OK. Also made the power harrow for my Atos to fit, and it looks a little better on this tractor. I have modified the harrow a little bit for the three point hitch of this tractor, and the changes will allow for a seeder to be added to this harrow. I'm not done with this MOC yet. Furrow is coming next... Also a couple of trailers.

Thirdwigg's MOCs
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I lot of projects are coming to completion in Thirdwiggville lately. Here is the Porsche 911RS 964. Heavily influenced by @paaves two 911 versions. In little Porsche 911 in the scale of LEGO 42098. Features: -Steering -Flat 6 Engine -Opening Hood, Doors, and Trunk When it sits next to the car from 42098, it looks a little out of scale, but it's really close.
