[Esl - FB2 Apr] : A gift from Corrington
Bregir replied to Tezclatipoca's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice prison, Faladrin! I am enjoying the story, and will be looking forward to more. It is always cool when storylines span multiple builders! :)- 11 replies

I will mirror what others have said: A wonderfully lively scene, with a lot of great representations of different cargo type shown. Very well done! :) -
[SR-FB1] May '16 - The Barber-Surgeon of Saville
Bregir replied to Kwatchi's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice looking barber shop, Kwatchi. Another underrepresented craft in BoBS. Lots of nice details. I am a bit concerned with the... dark ceremonies the captain seems to be conducting... But at least they seem to work! :P -

I believe we have a question from the audience: "Fascinating! Most fascinating, señor da Pontelli! One wonders - have you made any considerations as to how it works? Why does it fly? What scientific principles are at work?" - Cooke- 42 replies

[COR - FB] "Golden Filly" 5F Schooner
Bregir replied to SilentWolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Erhm, I fear I am an accomplice in this highjacking.. :P Fascinating discussion! :D However, Kurigan - I have been unable (admittedly with limited research) to find any sources denoting anything as a brigantine or hermaphrodite brig which carries a gaff sail on the fore, but I would like to see your source. I still think gaff rig on the fore will make her a variation of a schooner. And a topsail schooner can possibly carry a full suite of square sails, it seems, which fits the current vessel. -
I believe we will have more casualties from suspense this bout, as Ska is very busy well into this week and perhaps the next with rl-stuff. So, have patience and may the force be with us! :)

[COR - FB] Captured Ship, El Bellos, 5LA
Bregir replied to SilentWolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I think I prefer this one of your two most recent vessels, although they are both very good! However, this one's hull is just more elegant, as is fitting for a light warship. The simple but effective tumblehome is very nice, and I like her stern. The bow could do with a bit more curvature, but generally, I really like it. The inclusion of stern davits is cool, as is the crew and the brickbuilt guns. As to rigging, my comments are the same as to the Filly(including the topsail on the mizzen), and I think in her current setup, this is also a hermaphrodite brig. However, with the size of the sails and placement of the mast, I would change the spanker sail on the foremast to a staysail, which I believe would make her a brigantine. Those are in the American, terminology, according to wikipedia, and the names would be slightly different in British terminology, but anyways... :P Overall, two very well executed vessels - Corrington can be proud to have them sailing under its flag! And I better correct myself here too. :) She is a topsail schooner if she carries gaff sails on both masts, and a hermaphrodite brig it is turned into a staysail. -
[COR - FB] "Golden Filly" 5F Schooner
Bregir replied to SilentWolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Sorry for this double post, but this talk of rigging types piqued my interest, and I had to study it a bit more. My conclusion? If she has gaff sails on both masts, she would be considered a schooner, as in this case, and as she also carries square sails on the fore, a topsail schooner. Taking away the boom and gaff on the fore (I.e. turning that sail into a staysail) would make her a hermaphrodite brig. :) -

Overall, very nice vessel, silentwolf. Both hull and rigging are very nice, and I particularly like how the proportions just seem right, in terms of mast height, size of sails, hull, cabin, etc. My only comment to rigging is that your topsail on the mainmast (the aftmost mast) is rather oddly shaped. I would check up on that if I were you - a few pictures should show you what I mean. However, aprt from that, this is absolutely excellent rigging. I think Kurigan is entirely right in his classification, and I believe this is the first hermaphrodite brig we see here. Very nice! And to Blackdeathgr: Well. For brigs, schoooners, etc., the foremost mast is called the fore-mast, and the second the main-mast. ;) It really is very simple - a third mast would be the mizzen. Distinction between these masts are in some cases necessary to discern the shiptype, for instance between a brig (fore- and mainmast) and a ketch. (Main and and mizzen.) -
I think the size and armament is easily sufficient for a 3A, perhaps even 4A. I like your alternative approach to ship building, and brick built guns are always a hit with me. :D On the other hand, I would suggest you experiment wit custom rigging to get better results. There is a nice tutorial on junk rigging somewhere on the pirates forum. Further, your hulls seem rather similar to me, and I would like to see you experiment more here. Lastly, the cabin here seems very bulky and blocky - could be more elegant if integrated into the hull. Lastly, may lt. Sulu live long and prosper, even if he goes where no minifig went before! ;)

And yet another great vessel from the duke! :) And this time with a story and description, something I have missed abit on your other vessels. I like the look of that wreck, and using it for target practise is a great idea. Photography does seem to be your nemesis, but I am sure that will improve in time. Perfect size for a class 4A, and probably the upper limit for size of a single masted vessel. I do agree with Garmadon that for a vessel this size, the bowsprit does seem unnaturally long. Your example is a smaller cutter, I think, and not entirely suitable for a large cutter like yours. My comments to the rigging are similar to your 3A, so I will not repeat myself, apart from saying that it is generally looking very good.
-
As to photography, I would suggest a tripod and longer exposure, if that is possible with the camera you use. Alternatively, better natural light would probably help. :) This is a nice looking cutter, and I think both hull and rigging turned out very well. I really like the brickbuilt guns, and they are much better to scale than than the Lego guns! My only suggestion is to change the balance between the main course and topsail (lower and upper square sail). They should probably be of approximately the same size, and normally they wouldn't overlap. And again, bringing the spankersail into the mast would also be more realistic, moving the maintop (the platform) up to above the gaff. All in all, another fine vessel. Keep,it up! :)

Nice looking fort, Dukesc. It has a lovely classic feel with those colours, but without the simplistic official set touch. I particularly like the sloped walls and the colour scheme. If possible, throwing in some dark red brick bricks to complement the printed peeling off plastering could be an idea for additional detailing. Well done.
-
Nice little sloop, Dukesc. I like the look of the materials you use for the sails - what is it? The two part bowsprit is nice too, as is the hull shape. A few comments on rigging. Both sails seem to be carried rather high, and I would suggest trying to bring them both down in future sloop-builds. Especially the boom of the mainsail looks like it should be lowered for a better handling vessel. I can see how that is hard to achieve as those hulls tend to lead to rather high sterns, but if the stern could be lowered so that the boom could be brought down to just above the helmsman, I think that would make her look more harmonic. Further, the front of the sail should be brought all the way in to the mast. Hope it is useful - what you have here is already very good. Well done!
-
A very fine little lateen rigged vessel. I really like the long lateen yard and the size of the sail - it looks both realistic and highly elegant. I think this is my favorite amongst all the vessels built on these old hulls without center pieces. Normally they look too tall and chunky, but this one is very harmonius. Perhaps it is the slightly cartoonish character of its lines, but anyways, it works, and she looks very sleek and fast. My only wish is to have a bit more story to your builds, and perhaps some improvements in photography. Well done!

The "Spirit of Eslandola" (sequel to "it flyeth")
Bregir replied to Captain Braunsfeld's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
It seems to me that the artist's rendition underestimates the size of those ballons, unless of course phlogiston has much more carrying power than I ever thought possible! It is amazing how swiftly your findings are developing, and spreading, and some day flying might perhaps not be limited to the select few! ;)- 18 replies

[OL-CF-A] Ceremony at the General Breshaun Monument
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Breshaun must be a very stately place with those parks and squares! Very good looking monument, and a nice scene to surround it. The base shape is innovative, although it does leave one wondering, what might be in the parts left out! :) -

[COR-FB2 May] Castle Wolfstone on Corrington´s North Coast
Bregir replied to Brickwolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
While a very simple castle build, it does a great job, together with the story, to convey drama! I imagine it being in some vaults or hallways deep in the castle. I like the small shrine with the flags too. -
Just chipping in to say that interior shots and story does a lot for a build. Actually, this is a,great A/B test to indicate how much that means! ;) Nice story, which I will be looking forward to follow further. And the interior is great, particularly the mess. That stack of papers in the attic is perfect, although he must be a detective to,find his way around all that mess! :P
-
I never knew either that vineyards cold take this form, so this build is both educational and well executed. Fascinating!
-
Nice longhouse, Silentwolf. It is nice to see more of the indigenous people and I think this house and the story turned out really well. I like the liveliness of the surroundings, and my only suggestion is to try to overcome the 90 degree angularity of many LDD builds. However, you are doing very well - now turn that hull upside down and start pumping out battleships! :P
