Cantu's House La Oleon "As you know Sinbad," Li Fang was saying, "I have sent a number of the crew over to La Oleon with Ching Shih which leaves some opportunities for advancement among the crew still aboard The Viper." Sinbad was thankful he had not been among those commissioned to help crew their new ship, La Oleon. He had nothing against the new addition, but he felt a certain attachment to The Viper since it had been his first ship to serve on. He still wasn't sure he was in line with Li's methods, but he was much happier being a free man as a pirate than an over taxed, over worked man amongst the Oleonaders. "I've talked with some of the crew and they all agree that it is time you moved up from deck hand to full crew member" Li continued. "As long as you continue to give me your loyalty and hard work, I will make sure you are always taken care of among this crew Sinbad." Sinbad was thankful to be given this promotion. It was nice to no longer be on the bottom of the food chain.
  3. This is a Class 3A ship. She is captained by Ching Shih. Previously: Recruiting at Marco's This Is Not the Wealthy Housing of Rassilon Falling Out with Foxx Cantu's Fort in Rassilon The Viper Jail Break! Cantu's House While Cantu was being robbed, Li Fang and his crew of miscreants were successfully defending a pirate convoy against the nefarious wiles of an Oleon privateer. The result was that Li Fang succeeded as a captain where his father had failed. He led his crew in the successful capture of a prize! The La Oleon was quite the prize. Some of the crew from The Viper switched ships to help bring it into port at Rassilon. In port more crew were hired to help man the new ship. Even though she was painted in Oleon's favorite blue, she flew the black proudly showing her new ownership. OoC: Please note that I did "recycle" much of my last ship to build this one. I changed the sloping on the sides of the hull, swapped the dark red tiles for blue, and changed the masts. As this was a ship I captured and not a "new" boat, I hope no one minds that I went this route. I don't plan on making this a habit, but with little time to build this month, I thought this would be an acceptable shortcut.
  4. Previously: Recruiting at Marco's This Is Not the Wealthy Housing of Rassilon Falling Out with Foxx Cantu's Fort in Rassilon The Viper After their humiliating capture by the Mardians, the crew of The Viper was imprisoned while Mardier decided how best to use the ship. Sinbad found himself sharing a cell with Li Fang. “My father has failed one too many times!” Li exclaimed. “He’s always been too soft. That’s why we took privateering license when we could have been making our own way!” Sinbad knew Li had a point. But after everything Cho had done for him in bring him on as a crew member, he wasn’t sure he was ready to betray the captain just yet. “The men are on my side” continued Li. “We’ve only been waiting for the right opportunity. When the time comes, can I count on you?” Before Sinbad had a chance to answer, a large commotion began further into the jail. Sinbad watched as the guard ran towards the noise, but a few minutes later the only thing to return was a small bomb rolling across the floor. It blew the door off its hinges and Sinbad and Li rushed out. “Wait!” shouted Cho. “Don’t leave me!” Sinbad looked towards the captain and then at Li. He knew if he was going to succeed, he would need to make his own way. Hanging onto Cho’s coattails wouldn’t get him far. He turned away from the Cho’s pleas and left with Li and the rest of the crew as they stormed the harbor and took back The Viper.
  5. After escaping from the Mardierians (build to come soon!), Sinbad and the crew of The Viper found themselves pushed past The Nest of Thieves by a storm. Ending up in uncharted waters, they sent a small party ashore an island to restock their food and water supplies. Sinbad was looking for a source of fresh water when he spotted a small patch of ruined wall. Walking past the former wall was a liter carried by two red-skinned natives. Sinbad had never seen people quite like these before. He figured they had never seen a person quite like himself too so he stayed hidden. The natives looked very savage, so Sinbad hurried back to the crew to let them know the less time they spent on the island the better.

Previously: Recruiting at Marco's This Is Not the Wealthy Housing of Rassilon Falling Out with Foxx Cantu's Fort in Rassilon This is a Class 2 A "Armored Sloop" Captain Fang studied his maps carefully as The Viper and its crew set sail from Rassilon. He knew this voyage would be very important as it was their first voyage without the status of Olean Privateer in many years. He didn't know how well the crew was adjusting to the change and feared a mutiny. It didn't help that his son, Li, was vying with him for authority on the ship. He knew that unless their prize was as large or larger than the sum they normally received from Lord Foxx, his days as a captain would be very short indeed. Knowing this, he had ordered extra kegs of powder and more cannon balls to be purchased and loaded on board. They would be ready for a fight if their prize didn't surrender easily. Armed with 4 cannons, The Viper had a nasty bite.
  7. OoC: This is my 5th freebuild. If you are not a Sea Rat, please say you approve or give me a , thank you! When last we saw Freddy, he was trying to keep his chickens out of his house. When he learned that trained chickens were in high demand, he decided to go into the trained chicken business! He worked night and day with his chickens and finally was satisfied with their progress. He scrapped together enough money to buy a row-boat and set out from Rassilon to take his chickens to the market in Bastion. He also brought along a pig. And while not trained like his chickens, the pig was rather tasty and would fetch a fine price at market. Unfortunately, the pig did not survive the journey.
  8. Previously: Recruiting at Marco's This Is Not the Wealthy Housing of Rassilon Falling Out with Foxx OoC: This is my 4th freebuild, if you are not a Sea Rat please mark whether you vote for this build or not! Cantu’s Fort was situated on the east side of the bay. It was presided over by Jorge Cantu, a notorious pirate who had left Eslandola early on in its race for exploration to pursue the more lucrative occupation of piracy. After capturing rich prize after rich prize, Cantu decided it would be wise to find a place to guard his wealth and what health remained him. He had worked with Captain Fang on many raids so it was a natural choice to him for to have Cantu take over the running of the fort. Many wares were brought through the fort (for a fee of course) for protection while in transition between buyers. After returning from Olean, Sinbad accompanied Li Fang to the fort to see if they could find a new prize to go after. Since the funds they received from Lord Foxx were barely enough to cover the costs of their journey, let along pay the crew anything, Captain Cho had agreed that they needed to go after a lucrative prize quickly or risk mutiny from the crew. Li negotiated with Jorge Cantu and left with some valuable information.
  9. OoC: This is my 3rd freebuild, if you are not a Sea Rat please mark whether you vote for this build or not! Cho Fang was the captain of The Viper. A small, but well armed ship for its size, The Viper was good for hauling various kinds of cargo without getting caught at sea by anyone looking to relieve her of said cargo. Sinbad started as a member of its crew by mopping the deck, cleaning out the buckets from the crew quarters, helping the cook, and any other simple duties the captain and quartermaster could find for him to do. From the beginning of the voyage Sinbad could tell that quartermaster Li Fang (son to the captain) did not like him. It was obvious by the less-than-savory duties and looks Li gave him. But after a few days at sea, after Sinbad had proved his claim to be a hard worker Li began to let off. However, there was still some obvious resentment harbored by Li against Sinbad. Sinbad assumed it was because Cho, Li’s father, had forced the issue of hiring him on as deck hand. Sinbad didn’t understand why, if there was so much tension between the father and the son, how one was captain and the other quartermaster until after he learned that on pirate vessels, the crew votes to decide who fulfills those rolls. This crew had served under Cho Fang for many years, but enough of them saw his age as a potentially fatal flaw and so voted his son into the position of quartermaster. After leaving Rassilon, The Viper took its cargo back to Olean where a Lord Foxx was waiting to purchase it. Upon arriving at the docks Sinbad helped with the unloading and everything seemed to be going according to plan until some Bluecoat guards came up to them and demanded that they come with them. Sinbad found himself marched with Captain Cho and a few other members of the crew unlucky enough to be at the docks at that moment towards a large stone building situated equal distance between the heart of the city where La Noblesse lived and the docks where the working man lived. They were taken into a room where Lord Foxx and an advisor were arguing. “Ah,” began Lord Foxx, “Good, you’ve arrived. Men, you may go now.” “Lord Foxx,” stated Captain Cho, “I demand to know the meaning of this! Why have you interrupted our work and brought us in like common criminals!?” “It’s quite unfortunate, really” began Foxx. “You see the Order has found out about our little venture of reselling the goods you obtain from the pirates at quite a profit here in Olean. Since you are not one of their approved, taxed and monitored methods of trade, they have threatened me with the Clerics of Hades unless I cease my partnership with any ‘unapproved’ privateers and quietly donate a substantial sum to the Church.” “So you would turn on me, a man who has brought you good business,” replied Cho, “just like that!?” “Well, it’s not like I had a choice really” stammered Foxx. “But please don’t think I’m going to leave you with nothing. I’ve already arranged to purchase your cargo through a friend of a friend who has ties with Eslandola. You won’t receive as much money for it, but it’ll be a fair price. I brought you here in chains for show, to make it seem like I had really changed, but after dark I will sneak you back to your ship. It’s unfortunate our partnership must end, but please don’t look on me too unkindly. I do not share the freedom you pirates know on the Nest, I am bound by the rules of the Order.” Lord Foxx looked concerned and nervous as he waited for Cho to respond, “Well?” “You have honor,” began Cho, “I cannot fault you for that. Many men would not have done as you have for us. But you lack a spine.” And with that Captain Cho turned to leave. In the morning The Viper set sail, back to the port of Rassilon at The Nest of Thieves.
  10. The port of Rassilon had the privilege of having forts. Three of these formed a triangle which allowed them to best protect the bay and other interests. Behind the base of this triangle sprang up housing that was sturdy and higher quality than average. Because of this and the fact that it was the best protected portion of the city residences here were naturally more expensive to buy or rent. Captain Cho Fang walked through a neighborhood that was not in the wealthy section. He had sailed as a pirate captain for many years, gaining the respect of his fellow pirates. When the Nest of Thieves was founded, Captain Fang was an obvious choice as leader of the port of Rassilon. He still had command of his own ship and took her on regular voyages of a nefarious nature. But when he was back at the port he would oversee the town meetings and give council to what the best course of action was. Most of the governing, if you can call it that in a pirate port, was left to a council of men loyal to Fang who stayed behind when he went sailing. And although Fang was the “mayor” of this town in name mostly and function but a little, he still felt a responsibility to its residents. These feelings did not stop him from punishing those who swindled him or failed to bring in a good profit, but it did mean he spent some time walking the streets of Rassilon each time he was back, to get a feel for the town and what the mood of the people was. He was in a section of housing that could afford to have stone buildings, covered in plaster to reflect the heat; but couldn’t afford trifles like doors or proper windows. Most of the year it was unbearably hot in Rassilon so this caused little discomfort. But it did allow for other problems like teaching the chickens not to each the straw from out of the mattress.
  11. Born the 3rd son of well-to-do land owner in Olean Sinbad was expected to join the clergy as all good 3rd born sons were known to do. His oldest brother was to inherit the land from their father, and the 2nd son was already a person of note in the Olean Navy. And if Sinbad were to follow tradition, he would become a well spoken clergyman. But Sinbad did not believe in the religion of his people, and he did not want to be stuck on land his whole life. His heart yearned for the sea so to the sea he went. His full story is for another time, but after more than one voyage, Sinbad ended up on the island known as the Nest of Thieves. The island lived up to its name and soon Sinbad found himself penniless. Not without resources, Sinbad lifted a few coins off of a drunk who had passed out in an alley. The coin was just going to be spent on drink, thought Sinbad, so what harm was there in him being the one doing the drinking? He entered a loud tavern known as Marco’s and settled into a corner. He noticed many of the bar’s patrons were of an ethnicity different than most he had encountered on the main lands of the peninsula. He assumed they were of the Orient, a land even further south and east than New Oleon. Their speech was a little different, but easy enough to understand. “I tell you father, we are wasting our time here!” the man standing at the shoulder of “father” said. “The best men are to be found at the bars closer to the docks.” “Yes young grasshopper,” “father” replied, “But those men are also more blood-thirsty and less likely to appreciate the fine line our crew must walk in our endeavors. Remember, you are not captain for a reason, you still lack much experience.” “Ha!” the son exclaimed, “I may not be captain, but as quartermaster I hold just as much power as you. Be careful not to forget that!” “You’re arrogance does not become you Li” he replied. “Now are we going to continue to argue like dogs over a bone or are you going to find us some more recruits? We need at least one more member if we are going to pull off our next privateering run for Lord Foxx.” Sinbad perked up at this. He wasn’t sure he was ready to join a bloody-thirsty crew. He needed a ship with a level headed captain so he could learn how best to make a living in this new world he had entered. A privateer was nothing more than a sanctioned pirate who managed to turn some profit towards the one who sanctioned him. But a captain who accepted a privateer’s license was more likely to give Sinbad a chance to learn how to be a good crewman without too much punishment or ridicule. “I couldn’t help but overhear that you’re in need of another member for your crew” Sinbad said as he stepped over to their table. “Where do I sign up?” “We don’t take just anyone you sewer rat!” spat the son. “You look like you don’t know your fore from your aft sails!” Ignoring the tirade of his son Li, the father asked, “You look Oleander by birth, where do you hail from?” Sinbad looked down at his feet, “My past is not important, only my future. I wish to sail the seas and live a life on the oceans. I may not know much yet, but I swear I’m a quick study and a hard worker.” “Hmm,” nodded the father. “A man who runs from his past always finds it just behind him.” The father looked Sinbad in the eyes for a long time while Li looked bored and impatient. At least the father said, “I am captain Cho Fang. Will you serve me and my crew as a faithful member and able bodied hand?” “Sign me up” was Sinbad’s reply. Additional shots:

He still didn't like the idea about killing Corries and Ollies in cold blood, but the two groups had been about to slaughter each other at the lagoon so what difference did it really make? Left to their own devices, one of the two parties would have killed the other and then turned their attention on the Sea Rats. The recent Pirate Purge had shown that to be true. Just because they didn't want to follow a tyrannical king or pay heavy taxes to an unfair trade company the Sea Rats were labeled villains and scallywags. Perhaps he didn't agree with Li's methods, but he couldn't argue with the results. There was much Sinbad still wasn't sure about. He didn't know if serving under Cho had been better than serving under Li. Both men commanded respect and under both men the crew had seen gold flowing into their pockets. But under Cho there had been no expression of their freedom from the chains of the ruling nations. In truth they had acted little different from one of the Empire's lackeys while under Cho. Under Li they at least showed the Empires that they were free men, free to earn their money the way they wanted to. But was slaughtering men in cold blood really the best way to do that? Sinbad had been lost in thought as he walked through the hold but when he heard voices he stopped. "Listen men, we can't keep following this joke of a captain" said the man in the hat. Sinbad recognized all four of the crew members, even in the dim light of the hold. It appeared not everyone shared his view that Li's results were good ones. "He keeps sending us on wild goose chases!" the ranting continued. "We need a captain who actually has a plan, not just one who's out for his own personal glory. What does his glory get us? Not more gold, at least not for us!" "I say we bide our time until his back is turned and we push him overboard!" said one of the other pirates. "Naw, everyone would know who did it. We gotta make it look like an accident" said another. "Then we're all agreed. We'll find a way to get rid of the captain. Then we can get rid of his runt, that Sinbad" finished the boss in the hat. Well that wasn't something Sinbad expected to hear. The crew thought of him as a stooge for Li? Sinbad thought he had become a respected member of the crew. Could it really be that they just feared him like they feared Li? And no matter how much he disagreed with Li's methods, he wasn't about to let a bunch of low-life scum take him out. He would have to think of something. And soon.

Freddy, still living off the gold he had earned from his big haul, had bought out the largest room they had and was regularly hosting parties. Others who had not been as lucky, paid for the smallest room. The individual in the smallest room was trying to stay out of sight. If any of the other pirates in the motel knew he was there, word would probably reach Li Fang's far sooner than he wanted it to.

"It appears he captured a prize last month!" Over the past couple months Sinbad had become somewhat of a confidant to Li. Their conversation never become too personal, but Sinbad found himself more privileged to Li's rants than other members of the crew. (please note that the above picture is from a past build) "Why is it that Captain Sulu gets famed as a notorious pirate and I'm left running guard duty for some merchants!" shouted Li. "Captain, we did bring in a prize of our own not that long ago, and a much bigger prize than that little merchant boat Sulu acquired" replied Sinbad. "It's not the prize that matters Sinbad," countered Li. "Hasn't serving as a part of my crew taught you at least that much? It's about the fame. That was something my father never understood." "What do you mean?" asked Sinbad. He thought they had done pretty well for themselves over the past couple months. Though he thought that while serving under Li's father, Cho. The greatest difference he had noticed between from serving under both father and son was that the crew seemed more calloused under Li. Cho had a way of making people want to follow him. Li just made them fear him. "People need to fear my flag" Li said, interrupting Sinbad's thoughts. "If other captains fear me, they won't put up a fight when we attack. They will know it's better to surrender than face the dreaded Captain Fang!" "So what are you going to do?" inquired Sinbad. He was a little worried about the evil glint in Li's eyes. "The nations need to know I'm ruthless. It's time I showed them just how ruthless I can be" was Li's response. "I purchased some information in a tavern the last time we landed that told me where a Corrington expedition is going to be. I want you to take some of the men and make sure they disappear.: "Me sir?" asked Sinbad. "Why me? I have no rank or standing with the men." "Ever since I left my father to rot in that Mardien prison, I've heard murmurs amongst the men" answered Li. "I don't know if I can trust them, but I think I can trust you." Sinbad still hadn't figured out why Li trusted him. He had spoken out against leaving Cho when the choice was made, but neither had he supported it. For now, he wanted to continue to take advantage of Li's trust for he didn't know when it might come in useful. "Take a few men to these coordinates" continued Li. "Make sure the Corries don't survive. I want everyone to know exactly what kind of man Li Fang is!" Sinbad had killed before when they were defended themselves or taking prizes, but never in cold blood before. He wasn't sure he agreed with Li that to be feared one had to be ruthless. He was still thinking over these matters as he a three others from Li's crew waited in the marsh for the Corrington boat they had spied early. The expedition was being led by the unfortunate Captain Stasch. A man already known for meeting misfortune. Sinbad signaled for the attack and he and the others popped out of the swamp. The fight was short. The two soldiers were killed quickly. Captain Stasch, at the first sign of trouble, flung himself over board and made a daring escape. Sinbad did not feel bad that Stasch had gotten away, but failed to report that reflection when he was debriefed by Li.

His own son had left him to rot in a Mardien prison. His men had essentially mutinied against him and no one had come back to rescue him. He wanted his ship back and he wanted a crew to command. But as long as he had no gold, neither seemed like a reasonable possibility. While in town he heard the rumors of a treasure fleet bound from Nelisa. He decided to visit his old Sensei. He know that if anyone in Rassilon had information on the treasure, it would be him. "Sensei," said Cho, "I see you are still training men in the ways of martial arts. It seems that even Sea Rats can be taught discipline." "Yes," replied the Sensei, "You would do well to remember your old lessons. You seem to be lacking in discipline yourself these days if the rumors are true. Not even able to hold a crew together eh?" "Sensei," said Cho, "It was not I who lacked the discipline, but my son. He's the one who choose his own way rather than submit to me. But that's not why I'm here." "But it is why you should be." answered Sensei. "You think that treasure will buy your way back into power, but what you don't understand is that you are working with pirates. They exist because they do not believe submitting to their authorities is in their best interest. They want to choose their own way and reap the full rewards of it without having to share with anyone else. That is what your son understands and you do not. Sea Rats will not submit simply because the honor demands it. But they can have honor in their own way. If they respect the Pirate Code and their fellow men who uphold it, that is a kind of honor. But enough of my prattle, as you said, it's not why you're here. Come inside and I will share with you what I know of the treasure."

Captain Li of The Viper was determined to be the Pirate who would be known for getting the treasure. His crew spotted a cog known as Barell Belly (not shown in this post) in the distance and he decided to see if they had any information about the treasure. Of course, being the kind of captain he was, he decided to torture the information out of the crew. As they approached the cog, they realized it was a whaler. Li sent a small number of his crew out to retrieve the crew who were harvesting the whale oil while the rest of the ship took care of the Barell Belly. The whalers had just finished slaying the whale so the long boats were still a long ways from their ship. This allowed the small party from The Viper to approach without suspicion as Li began his attack on the Barell Belly. Li had commanded the men to bring back as many prisoners as possible for questioning. But the party's captain had other plans. As soon as they were out of ear shot he told the crew, "I'm itching for a fight today boys! Now we're going to kill the lot of these whalers and have some fun with it! We can tell the captain they put up too much of a fight to bring any of them back alive. You all with me?" There was a chorus of "yes" from all the crew except Sinbad. "And you, Sinbad" asked the leader. "Can we count on you?" "You're the boss, boss" was Sinbad's reply. "Good, now let's give them what for!" Three of the men were dispatched with brutal quickness, but Sinbad kept hesitating. He never had any intention of kill his man. But he was contemplating his next move. He was in a right sticky situation and he knew it. All four of his fellow pirates wanted him dead. And he knew they probably intended to kill him here and now and make it look like he died in the fight. But how was he to get out of his predicament? "Please, I'm the captain, I can pay you a ransom" said the man Sinbad was holding at gun point. "Just don't shoot me and we can both come out of this with what we want." Sinbad called over his shoulder to the leader, "Boss, he says he's the captain. Maybe we should take him back to Li for questioning." In that moment Sinbad knew what he was going to do. How had he ended up in this situation to begin with? He had chosen it. He had chosen to join a pirate crew because he didn't want to live by the rules his family and country had dictated he must follow without consulting him. His whole had been planned out and regulated without so much as a thought as to what he might want. So he had left it all behind to join a crew of men who made their own way in the world. He had even chosen to serve Li over his father Cho, as little as he liked to admit it, when he left Cho in prison. Being a pirate was really about being able to chose your own way, and dealing with whatever consequences there might be, good or bad. Sinbad was going to give this lot a choice. They could obey the captain's orders and bring this man back to Li alive, or they could chose not to and face the consequences. The boss called out, "Now Sinbad. We agreed, are you going to make this difficult for us?" The other men started to turn towards Sinbad so he made his move. Sinbad shot the first man in the face blowing him backwards. Then he leaped across the whale's carcass grabbing one of the harpoons on his way across. "You all had your chance!" shouted Sinbad. "You shouldn't have chosen to cross the captain and kill me." And with that he threw the harpoon through the flesh of the last pirate. His dirty task finished, Sinbad tied up the captain of the Barell Belly and sailed back to The Viper, still carrying the harpoon. OoC: Since I know someone's going to ask, the harpoon is from this set. Not a common piece, but I ran across it while I was making a Bricklink order awhile back and decided I really wanted to use it as a pirate weapon. And the orange hair is from the new Beauty and Beast set.

But one day an Oleander artist showed up who insisted that if he were allowed to bring a little bit of art into the pirate's lives, they would feel more enlightened as a people. He built a pedestal and began to chisel away some statues to grace the people of Rassilon. As the statues took form it was clear that it was an angel slaying a demon. When asked what the two figures represented the artist stated that the angel represented justice and the demon represented piracy. He said that he felt if the pirates of Rassilon had a permanent representation of what they faced if the persisted in their sins, that they may turn from their vile ways. The sea rats of Rassilon didn't like that, so that night they drowned the artist in quicksand and left him to dry on the beach. They added a few more touches to the rock-like artist and replaced the demon with him. Some say you can still see the eyes of the artist looking out in horror through the helmet they drowned him in. Now the sea rats say the piece of art represents how they make their own justice.
