How Many Mirkwood Elf Army Sets Do You Plan on Buying?
Lynx replied to Deathleech's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
A Mountain Troll would be sweet! Regarding my proposed Nazgul inclusion, buying up to six would make sense: You'd have eight Nazgul (six with Fell beasts) and the Witch-King (fingers crossed!). It appears that only a small number of people purchase more than six copies of a single set, so I think it would be good business for LEGO. Actually, the whole Gondor Army set could be sold as Battle of Osgiliath. A larger set compared to an army builder with the same set-up as above, but including an additional three orcs, a row boat and more buildings/ functions. You'd get a nice scene (for people looking for one set), a great parts pack (for MOCers looking to build a huge Osgiliath or Minas Tirith) and an army builder that amasses orcs and Gondorians: buy six sets, and you'd have 6 Nazgul with Fell beasts, 6 rangers, 6 soldiers, 18 orcs and Faramir (5 duplicates); not to mention an expandable Osgiliath with great MOC/ MOD potential.- 102 replies

How Many Mirkwood Elf Army Sets Do You Plan on Buying?
Lynx replied to Deathleech's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I think you're not overestimating the sales potential for a Gondor army pack. Based on the current model (medium-sized set, six minifigures: 4 good vs 2 evil, one molded creature), how many of the following would people buy? Gondor army Set: White wall section of Minas Tirith, includes white 2x1 profile bricks and can be attached to the main Minas Tirith set Molded creature: Fell beast Figures: 1x Faramir (see my avatar) 1x Gondor ranger (olive green hood as seen in video game, bow & quiver) 2x Gondor Soldier (Roman shield with printing as suggested by others, new helmet) 1x Nazgul (as seen in Attack on Weathertop) 1x Mordor orcs Faramir is generic enough to function as foot soldier. His torso can also be used in combination with other parts, since the tree of Gondor might appear on the clothing of other nobles, the Warden of Healing et al. The utility of having more than nine Nazgul would obviously drop, but based on this poll, very few builders purchase more than that anyway, and selling fell beast & Nazgul shouldn't prove too difficult...- 102 replies

How Many Mirkwood Elf Army Sets Do You Plan on Buying?
Lynx replied to Deathleech's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
0-1, depending on the price tag in Australia. If it's $70, I'll be better off brick-linking Thranduil and the brown warg. Regarding your question about Uruk-hai Army, Deathleech, I purchased three (two on special for $40, one at full price $60). I find Rohan more appealing than Mirkwood elves, and Uruks (as well as Rohan soldiers) were necessary to give Helm's Deep a nicer display value. Mirkwood elves don't have a structure to go with, which is why I won't need any more. I also liked the set structure of Uruk-hai Army a lot more compared with the Mirkwood Elf Army.- 102 replies

I just had a look at the higher resolution pictures on page 1 and love the Radagast figure! And Beorn might grow on me once I've seen the movie. Thranduil, on the other hand, might be suffering from the worst head/ hair mold of the Middle-earth line! His ears growing out of his neck make the figure look ridiculous. The statue in Dol Guldur Battle has a hidden compartment containing the One Ring (I think). I wonder if there is some relevance for the movie, if it's meant to be Thrain's ring, or if it's simply a LEGO element added as play feature.

Thanks a lot! And better late than never regarding your comments, Mutant Orc. Always appreciated! I haven't forgotten my planned improvements, but unfortunately I won't get around to do it before the end of the year (semester break).- 15 replies

I don't think the disappointment about this wave stems from the look of Dol Guldur.* The predominant bland, 2-diminsional look could have been accounted for by choosing other sets. Radagast's home or Beorn's house, for instance, would have made beautiful sets! And given the attack of spiders in the first movie, there was certainly potential for an action-packed play set. The preview of dwarves being attacked by a giant bear within Beorn's house suggest similar potential. The problem with this wave is simply the lack of a stand-out brick set. Exclude the minifigures, and there is not much substance! In recent years, we've had Helm's Deep and Weathertop (some might argue for Balin's Tomb, too, since it was instantly recognisable on a shelf), then Bag End and finally the Council of Elrond and Orthanc. With those sets, LEGO set the bar very high, and the new sets simply pale in comparison. The 2013 Hobbit sets are not bad by any means. But we know they could have been even better, and that is why we voice our disappointment. *I agree that it is difficult to create anything but a grey pile of rocks. However, I would have preferred some depth in the structure, which would have given it a more complete feel. I think that Weathertop is a good example of that: an abstract model of a tower with a complete feel and play value, which is recognisable despite being far smaller than minifigure scale. Of course, I understand that opinions on this set are divided, and other fans prefer a set focussing on parts of a scene rather than a complete building.

When Lake Town Chase was first revealed, I thought: 'Mediocre set at best - not getting it and waiting for the other sets of this wave.' Now I think: 'Lake Town Chase is the best-looking set in this wave.' I agree with others: the sets are bland walls (two of which can be combined to form a larger wall). The elven wall is particularly odd. The top section is a weird mixture of studs and flat pieces, the 'tree' looks even worse than the one in Attack of the Wargs - and its topmost section with puzzling placement of grey pieces looks like the design of a very young LEGO builder, rather than that of a professional. I'm still looking forward to the sets and will certainly get Radagast and Thranduil via BrickLink. Beorn, however, is a HUGE disappointment and looks nothing like Tolkien's skin changer. I am usually very positive and are incredibly grateful for LEGO to release Middle-earth sets in the first place, but this wave is a major let-down, and I am already looking forward to June 2014 and *hopefully* excellent Lord of the Rings sets. I would sum up this wave as follows: Nice minifigures of peripheral characters in bland playsets without display value.

Thanks for the pictures. Initial impressions: Mirkwood Elf Army: Very reminiscent of Uruk-hai army in size and minifig inclusion. I'll buy one and save money in hopes for a similar Gondor set next year - of which I'd purchase multiple. Dol Guldur Ambush: Beorn with short legs is a surprise. Very limited army builder appeal due to very limited utility of having multiple Beorn figs. Ranked second-to-last among low-cost Middle Earth sets so far (Wizard Battle -> Gandalf arrives -> Dol Guldur Ambush -> Riddles for the Ring). Dol Guldur Battle: Another grey wall section. The blurry images don't allow further evaluation. Overall, I'd so far rank this wave bottom of the Middle Earth waves - and it's not even close. 1) LotR 1st wave: Recognisable structures, combination of sets, all new minifigs, highly detailed Rohan faction, army builder, complete fellowship.... 2) LotR 2nd wave (not counting Orthanc): The pirate ship was a wasted slot, but Black Gate and Rivendell section instantly recognisable and nice for display. Great figures all around. 3) Hobbit 1st wave: Bag End alone put that wave over the current one, in my opinion. Most dwarves were stunning with new molds all around. 4) Hobbit 2nd wave: A collection of play sets lacking display value due to absence of recognisable buildings. I'm crossing my fingers for a great Radagast figure, and better pictures could change my initial impression.

Thanks for the info, DurinsBane. Can you say anything about the structure of Dol Guldur? Is it a small-scale representation (similar to Weathertop) or a random ruin/ wall structure? I was disappointed with the first Hobbit wave (aside from Bag End), and Dol Guldur is the only set of this wave that could provide some of that 'recognisability' I'm looking for in LotR/ Hobbit sets.

Thanks for the info! I hope Radagast is captured well in LEGO. I'm not sure how PJ writes Azog into Dol Guldur, but a set with three exclusives (Radagast, Azog, Bolg) sounds good. I'll definitely get a Mirkwood Army set! I'm sure army builders will appreciate a warg and multiple elves and orcs in this set. I assume that the elven king is indeed Thranduil, as this would make the set very similar to Uruk-hai army (warg instead of horse, four elves vs. two orcs, one named figure). Dol Guldur ambush has the potential for a cheap army builder set, too. Two orcs in a cheaper set sounds good if the other pieces are worthwhile. Given the initial set info, the soldier could be Elrond. I'm surprised regarding the apparent lack of Thrain in any Dol Guldur set, and I expected Galadriel, as well.

The second Trailer hat rekindled my interest. I'm still looking forward to the next LotR wave, rather than towards the Hobbit sets, but elves in golden Armor would work beautifully as Glorfindel.

Great review of a very neat little set! I found three of these sets for a reasonable price on eBay and was glad about it. Polybags of non-unique characters could be the only option for LotR army builders - due to the absence of battle packs. Hopefully a Gondor soldier polybag will come along next year!

Thanks! I think it'll be a toss-up between the Falcon and the X-Wing for me. -
"Where was Gondor when the Westfold fell?" Fantastic build! I love how you captured the dread and overwhelming odds that turn this battle into a slaughter. Saruman will pay for this!

Thanks for your suggestions. The X-Wing looks great! I had a look at the 2014 thread, and apparently there's a new X-Wing coming. I'm not sure if I should wait for that one, but I don't suppose anybody can tell. Thanks for your reply! I don't understand the abbreviations, unfortunately (aside from DS, which you explained earlier). Spot the theme-newbie. ;) Thanks a lot! The battle of Hoth looks great! Endor looks fantastic. I think the Ewok village might be my favourite so far, but it's too costly for a 'secondary' theme - both in terms of money and space it would require to display. But those ewoks are just awesome. :) Wow! That Falcon looks great! And as you wrote, the included characters are amazing. Thanks very much for the suggestions! -

Dear all, I generally post in the Historic Themes forum, but a recent viewing of my Star Wars DVDs, coupled with the preview of the Ewok Village set, has rekindled my desire to add some Star Wars set to my Lord of the Rings collection. I have only ever had two sets, which my wife (then girlfriend) bought me in the late 90s (Jedi Defense with Obi-Wan and a small set with the Emperor and Darth Vader). What I am interested in are your recommendations for sets. I see Star Wars as my secondary theme, although it might become primary once the Lord of the Rings line ceases to exist, and my re-found LEGO interest would still be alive. Accordingly, I mainly look for sets with high display-value, that are instantly recognisable. I am in favour of the original trilogy but definitely not opposed to the new sets. I am not a fan of the animation series, however. Thanks for any replies and may the force be with you all! -

Toys R Us has 25% off LEGO from September 4-17. I'm not sure if it's restricted to Friends, Duplo, City and Star Wars. The aforementioned themes are listed with logo in the catalogue, but it doesn't specify anywhere. If anybody knows for certain, please let us know. At 25% off, I might look into the Pirate Ship Ambush, after all. -
Thanks for the review! I like the detail on all the figures and think this set is surely something kids will love! From a collector's point of view, the colours are far too bright (particularly the siege engine) to ever display this, and I'll stick with the Lord of the Rings sets for my fantasy needs.
