Technic General Discussion
Saberwing40k replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I hope that the red 8z gears without friction will get reused in other sets, because I personally don't want them to become like the pneumatic cylinder brackets, immensely useful, but also selling for insane prices on the secondary market. Also, I found an article on a NASA test rover, and I think that somebody should build it. http://www.popularmechanics.com/space/moon-mars/a15094/nasas-new-car-looks-like-a-cart-handles-like-a-hot-rod/ Look at it go! Also on things I would like to see built: the Sany SCC-36000 According to Engineering News Record, it is one of the largest cranes in the world. Just go through the slideshow, there's lots of cool stuff in there. http://enr.construction.com/products/equipment/2012/extras/0925/slideshow.asp?slide=6 -
Well, I've decided to venture outside of my comfort zone in Technicland, and post some of my stuff here. I've got a number of small and medium size Bionicle and Hero Factory creations that I feel do not justify their own threads, so I'll post them all in this thread. My first thing for this thread is a Bionicle update of a Galidor alien called Ooni. I have no idea if that is the name of the species, or the individual, or whatever, but i kind of like the freak. Ooni is also the only Galidor set I own, and I have a number of fond memories of playing with him. My copy is complete, aside from the other head. If I recall, there was no configuration of Ooni that looked good, and used all of his parts, so that was quite annoying. Anyway, I originally created this thing for the Battle For The Golden Mask contest, but as I was ineligible to enter, he was put in storage until I brought him out now. If I were to enter him, I would have given him a backstory involving being a horrible, twisted freak of nature from another dimension, who has a touch that causes everything around him to mutate horribly. Anyway, on to pictures. Bionicle Ooni by Saberwing007, on Flickr I kept all of his major features, including his weird jaws, color scheme, 4 arms, 4 legs, and 4 eyes. Ooni closeup by Saberwing007, on Flickr But, he is far more stable and poseable, and has opening jaws as well as poseable thumbs. Ooni Details by Saberwing007, on Flickr Given that the small arms on the original are more mechanical looking, I did the same on mine, with the Glatorian fists in DSG. Ooni Roar by Saberwing007, on Flickr Apparently, some village was able to snap a blurry photo of the beast roaring at nothing in particular. This is for almost ruining Lego forever! by Saberwing007, on Flickr Ooni attacks Ooni for almost ruining Lego forever. He deserves it. Also, this is literally the most dynamic pose I could get out of the original Ooni, as he is not really good for that, though not for the ratchet joints so much as weird proportions. There is probably going to be more creations to come, and if anybody wants instructions or more pictures, just let me know.

Parts you'd like to come back
Saberwing40k replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Those are some interesting points you made, Blakbird. I think Lego did learn from these mistakes, though. Back on topic, I'd like to see these parts return: Znap flex axle. Although, I heard that they can actually be unwound by being twisted the wrong way, so maybe an improved version. Weight brick Micro motor Air Tank 5571 Black Cat wheels and tires. 3 spoke wheels. Metal hook. Hailfire wheels These click joints Cylinder brackets. Yes, I know, we will be getting longer cylinders, but still, there is no other good method of joining pneumatic cylinders back to back. It's not parts, but I've got some other things that would fall under stuff that Lego should bring back. Colors: Dark pearl gray Teal. Teal. TEAL!!!! Other: Parts packs, with a variety of beams in a variety of colors, or panels, or a variety of parts like pneumatic parts Universal sets. -
As the title says, which construction style of Technic is better, studded or studless? Look at the poll, and sound off. I couldn't get a poll to work, so could the mods please delete this.

Why do you hate studless creations? Hate seems to be a bit strong a word. Also, do you think that we should go back to payphones? Because that is pretty much what you are arguing. Basically, you are using the "I grew up with X, so therefore it is better, even though subsequent innovations have made it out of date." Or, "It's not what I had growing up, so therefore it sucks." I personally like studless a lot, and think that it is actually a lot more versatile then studded. it's actually easier for me to build with, and thus is my primary medium to work with. I think that studded has it's place, but I don't use it much. However, I do like some of the more stylized looks of the models from the late '90s, as I think they balanced form and function very well. I think that present sets are actually a bit too inclosed, obscuring the interesting gears and stuff, but that's just me. In conclusion, if you don't like studless, then don't build with it. However, don't say you hate what other people do with the system, and that Lego should go back. Why would they? As a company, they must innovate, for better or worse.

Actually, this will not work, as for whatever reason, PF receivers bypass the switches, as in the receiver will get power no matter what position the switch is in. You'd have to use old 9v switches.

Closed-Loop Control with PF
Saberwing40k replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Mark Bellis actually did something like this, just follow the link: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=241795 He actually knows a lot about automations and mechanisms, maybe he works with that kind of thing? -
Here we go, MBMC's idea, now that Brickshelf is back up. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=537994

Well, I have seen multiple function selector gearboxes, like in 8043, but as for more channels, there have been several suggestions on how to switch on and off battery boxes. Basically, you would have 1 battery box and one receiver, and that receiver would then be used to control any number of other battery boxes. Each additional battery box would then have three other receivers connected to it. So, at any given point in time, the system would have six channels of control, but could in theory have 24 total, or more. I know MBMC has posted an implementation of this concept, but as Brickshelf is down I can't post any pictures. Also, I have come up with a concept of my own, but instead of having a bunch of receivers, my idea is to have 1 channel of 1 receiver hooked up to a bank of PF switches, and the other controlling a switching mechanism. So, the second channel would cycle through the switches, turning one on at a time, and then the other channel would run the motor connected to that switch. But, as I have found out from experience, this setup gets really complex really fast.

My theory: The brick differential
Saberwing40k replied to monkeyjay2003's topic in General LEGO Discussion
It would seem as if there are only two non Lego bricks in the pictures, the Tyco and Megablocks bricks at the bottom left. -
Myself, I'm partial to the red and black one with the single wide stripe. Just an FYI, green parts tend to be a lot less common then red and black, and least in Technic. Also, if you go to the LDD/Digital tools subforum, there are a number of topics on how to get parts lists out of LDD, and export it to Bricklink.

You may or may not know this, but 41999 uses a chassis virtually identical to 9398, and for a good reason. To summarize, back in 2012/2013, Lego had a competition to see who could create the best new body using the chassis of 9398. The winner was ultimately our own RM8, with his design. I think there are only one or two differences between the chassis of the two sets. Your best bet would be to compare the chassis, from the instructions of 41999, to 9398. Also, I should warn you that 41999 uses a large number of pieces in dark blue, and some metalized pieces, and they are very rare and expensive. The wheels alone cost $7 a piece. But, you could make it in your own color scheme, like black and yellow, as RM8's original entry was. To build it, just download the 41999 instructions from Lego.com, and build it from when the chassis is finished. Also, it might serve you well to go to Rebrickable.com, and see what parts you need.

Can your 8043 do this?
Saberwing40k replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I don't think 8043 has the power/weight ratio to do something like that, and it's probably too heavy for the LAs and even the boom itself to hold. I think the only reasonable way to do this in Lego would be to have a pneumatic excavator with an external power supply, kind of like Jennifer Clark's little JCB. But, seeing this reminded me of a bunch of other construction vehicle stunts: All of these would be much easier, and quite possibly more impressive, in my opinion. Not that the Liebherr stunt wasn't awesome. -
What was the worst construction set?
Saberwing40k replied to Bigger Fish's topic in LEGO Action Figures
My worst sets , barring polybags, and any stuff I don't own, are the 2.0 heroes, who have really boring heads, and the Inika, who have really weird heads, but the heads are the only things I dislike. If they were given regular heads, I'd like them a lot better. -
MOLOSS (Mod of Lord of Skull Spiders)
Saberwing40k replied to Takanuinuva's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Awesome! This is what the set should have been. -
I can't believe that 3 people fell for this one. I wonder how I'm going to top myself next year... By the way, could we maybe edit the title of this thread to include [April Fool's Day]?

this looks like a part of the Large Hadron Collider, or maybe the drill of one of those tunnel boring vehicles.

RC Hamster
Saberwing40k replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Excellent, this is a whole new level of "How did he do that?" The autonomous maze run feature is unusual, you don't usually see that many semi autonomous Lego things, Mindstorms or otherwise. Although, I have made a similar, though larger model, based on a hedgehog, which I gave to my sister. Instead of the maze mode, mine rolls into a ball. Which he does often. My sister loves him, and was kind of amazed that I was able to get the cute hedgehog face just right. *Cough* I'm kidding, but my sister really does have a pet hedgehog, just like Sariel has a pet hamster. -
Today, or so I've heard, Lego has requested that all major second hand retailers of Lego pieces, i.e. Bricklink and Ebay, to stop selling the gold coins, and printed dollar pieces. The reason for this is that Lego is pushing for their own form of currency, called the Stud, abbreviated LS, for Lego Stud. Each LS would be worth 1 Euro, at present time, with the 1x2 $100 plates being worth 100 LS. Lego is also going to offer exchange at any Lego Retail store in the world, both from other currencies to LS, and from LS to other currencies. So, if one were to bring in a 10 LS coin, it would be worth 10 Euro. Naturally, this is abrickmario loves Disney!. I hope you all realize that now :-) Quick, dig through you spare parts bins, you all could be rich!

According to a friend of my dad's, who works for Terex, the company will be coming out with a new, 2300 ton capacity mobile crane. This machine, dubbed the AC-2000, is to be revealed at the 2016 BAUMA exhibition in Germany. The AC-2000 has apparently been in the planning and testing phases for a while now, spurred by the reveal of the Zoomlion Qay-2000, from China. But, that's not the most interesting part. Far more interesting is the fact that Terex has commissioned Lego to create a scale model to commemorate the monumental machine. I have not seen much information on the set itself, aside from these things: The fact that it is a Technic set. This term has come up everywhere I have looked for it. The number, 42016, which I found out actually refers to the month/year of the next BAUMA exhibition (April 2016, 4/2016) The price. I've heard a couple of prices, one source saying $450, another saying $500. Regardless, it is a very large set. I've heard things about an S motor being used, which presumably means a small motor. So, what does this mean? I think it means that we finally have a UCS Technic set on our hands. Or, it could be fully remote control, with Power Functions. I'm not entirely sure what the S motor is, or what it will be used for, but is an interesting tidbit. So, what might this model look like? Well, that isn't quite known, as there are no photographs of the actual machine, but I have received some information about it. The carrier is apparently derived from the AC-1000, but has three additional axles at the rear, to carry the extra weight, and support the superstructure. At least two of the new additional axles are driven, via an electric motor connected to a generator run by the engine. The area around the outriggers and the slew ring is of heavier, bulkier construction than the standard crane, and the outriggers are larger as well, and telescope farther. The superstructure is completely new, with integrated winches, and an operator cab on a unique telescopic swing arm. I've also heard references to a so called "X-Tend" counterweight tray, which means that the counterweight can move based on the requirements of the lift. By the way, this is an I bleed DisneyTMTM!!brickmario loves DisneyTM! I'll post more information when and if it becomes available, so in the meantime, what do you guys think?
