This is the first MOC that's not mine that I feel I want to build. And I'm not even into trucks. This is pretty much the most awesome Lego model I have ever seen. Big, but absolutely manageable sized, functional (with really meaningful and practical functions, not just functions for their own awesomeness), looks awesome, looks to be built very well. Not going to build it though, because it would be a big money, space and time investment. Thanks guys for making the instructions and renders/photos, otherwise I would have never realized how awesome this model is. I envy the crap out of this guy (too... To much envy, maybe I should give up on Lego....)

Actually, this is pretty much the only model that generated any "jealousy" as I remember from the 1.5-2 years I have been in the Technic forums. You are acting like this "jealousy" was a common thing here. Actually, it's the opposite. The community is too nice and seems to be so afraid to give some criticism (pretty much this can be the reason why this model from OUTSIDE EB gets criticism). Sheepo's Land Rover was pretty much the only model that got an objective REVIEW. I, for one would sooo love to see MOC reviews, just like set reviews. I would be the most honoured happy person if my models would create 0.00001% of the discussions (be it positive or negative) that this half-steel half-Lego life-sized model gets. So, to sum it up: you "give up" on EB, just because ONCE in 1-2 years a model gets negative criticism (a hyped model with obviously fishy advertisement)?

Well, Burf would be a bit rightfully jealous. And all other awesome builders who don't have the chance to get some attention outside of the tiny Technic community, because their creations are not "life sized", "1 ton", etc.

What do you mean by "split"? Divided? As far as I know, pressure is constant in a system if it's static. When the pistons are moving (not static state), then there can be some pressure loss due to the friction, but it's nothing like a split/divide.

[WIP] 9 Axle Mobile Crane

How on Earth are you going to lift that boom? (okay, it's not that undoable, I guess you plan to use several Pneumatic cylinders for that) -
Technic Black Parts
Lipko replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That 3x3 L frame thing with built in pins, the similar 3L connector with built in pins. The other way around: what parts are needed for a chassis but are not available in grey? I could use some steering links for the chassis I'm working on. Does the new +ooo+ part come in other than black? -
Technic Black Parts
Lipko replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You can get along with crap equipment and lighting too with some brightness/contrast adjusting of the images. So it's not the actual implementation of photo making is the issue in my opinion. You can make all details visible on black models too, but it doesn't look as good (in my opinion) as it looks with a different color. You have to look more carefully to find the details, or I don't know why. -
Technic Black Parts
Lipko replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm forced to build bigger stuff in black, due to my big stack of black parts, and some parts only available (affordable) in black. It is a big problem with my current car, the DTM car, because it's hard to see the details of the chassis. It would be tons more awesome it light or dark grey, or multi coloured, but steering links and panels (whick make up a majority of the chassis) are hard to find in different colors than black. -

My First Crawler (WIP)
Lipko replied to Junpei's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Above the 20T wheel that's connected to the sun gear. But maybe that's stupid, because you couldn't properly attach the wheel hub to the king pin. -

Why don't you just drive the uppermost gear that's in connection with the wheel hub? And ditch the other wheels inside the hub... Or just add an extra 12T double bevel gear on the right and push the hub outer with half stud. -

I'd give up the extra reduction at the kingpin before the planetary gear hub, and simply use the system with a gear that's usually used with linear actuators. The drive-train would be simpler and the kingpin wouldn't have to transmit rotation. I can imagine your current setup would stall the king pin under the weight of the vehicle. I hope I was clear... -
Do I see it right, and you can't use HTML tags any more? Than what can you do instead? Now there's no way to embed videos in the description? EDIT: ahhh forget it. Only embedding is not allowed, and never was.

Pull-Back Motors
Lipko replied to Mikuri's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Disclaimer: Even though I used pullback in my entry, I can't say I'm an expert in the topic. Maybe I could have use them better with more time to experiment. Due to the part and space limit, I didn't experiment with using two or more pullbacks in the same model. And I only know the newest ones. What is the project you have in mind? According to my experience, Pull-back motors are only capable to drive very simple cars (like pullback racers) and very simple mechanisms (like a clock escapement-timer thingy) and the pullbacks can't really lift weigh. The biggest problem is the small and limited energy you can put in the motor, and it's pretty much only enough to accelerate a small car. After the acceleration, the car is driven by inertia. My models can only work for a few seconds, the the crab can only move on smooth surfaces and for short distances The caterpillar can only move on smooth surfaces, but it can gain inertia pretty well so can travel pretty long distances.. Both of them can be driven with an M motor effortlessly on any surfaces without any gearing down, so you have a hint how limited is the use of the pullback motors. Depending on what you want to build, you can use multiple pullbacks, but don't expect too much of this either. -
Blakbird, could you show us some more pictures of the chassis? This model is very exciting. Usually I don't care about trucks, but I've been staring at the first image you posted for a long time.

[TRIPLE] Wind-up insectoids WIP
Lipko replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I've uploaded the LDD files for all three models: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/szecs/TRIPLE-entry/LDD/insect_001.lxf http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/szecs/TRIPLE-entry/LDD/insect_003.lxf http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/szecs/TRIPLE-entry/LDD/insect_worm_002.lxf -
Thank you all for the contest and the votes, and thanks Jim for organizing this the way you did! And many thanks for my girlfriend who didn't let me quit, though there were some moments when I wanted to. I had big luck with the contest theme: the idea of building a wind-up caterpillar came sometime in the summer. I wanted to build a simple, small-middle mode utilizing a pull-back motor. Then the TRIPLE contest came, and one hour after the contest start, I knew what I have to build. There was a ton of time to build and make the entry polished. Congratulations Doc! And Piterx, I envy the crap out of you that you built such an amazing entry in two days that got on the podium. And I also envy your skills, you are the most promising newcomer builder. If you would take some more time polishing your models, God knows what you could achieve. Thanks again!

42009 Extended Boom
Lipko replied to afol1969's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm surprised that the two linear actuators can lift the boom at all. -
I usually just place a grid on the reference image as I have to count only a few sizes for the overall shape to look realistic. I think the details can be much more characteristic of a model than the perfect sizes (you have to do lots of rounding anyway). But thanks for the tips anyway, maybe it would be easier than the counting thing.

Panic over. And some chocolate Santaclauses got also squished while I was yelling and cursing and crying. How long was brickshelf down?
-
Brickshelf is down..... Some of our entries are totally screwed because of this. Could we close voting for a day, so that we can upload or pictures somewhere, and fix our entries? I think it's time to give up that brickshelf crap once and for all.

I think you should link THE entry topic, because most of us have only WIP topics. It's easy to make a link that jumps to an entry, since since the #number at the posts are links that point to the bookmarks of the posts. Or something...
