Nice! I wonder if this part would be any better than the tan pin:- 38 replies

Cool! That looks like a considerably simpler construction of the remote. Does it work well for you?- 38 replies

Most hobbyist printers couldn't print anything that long in one piece, I don't think (though the awesome conveyor belt ones could!) Though I do think standard printers are very worth the money to people with uses for them. -
[sMOC] Remote Bla Bla
2GodBDGlory replied to vascolp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I was messing around trying to make a remote that could have more than two steps in each direction, and while I'm sure it's possible, I think it would be quite unwieldy. However, in the process, I struck on a different geometry that works nicely enough for the two-position remote, but without illegal techniques or old space tires! It is a bit bulkier, and I think the feel of the remote is worse, but it might be a better option for some people: It should be able to be reconstructed from the pictures in this gallery, should anyone be interested in trying it: https://bricksafe.com/pages/2GodBDGlory/2-position-pu-remote-v2- 38 replies

Great model, as always! The color scheme is very unusual and fitting! I did make a suspension like that on the fifth variant of this Ford F-Series MOC: It's in the variant in the last post in the thread. I don't think that style of suspension would be realistic for a Bronco this old, though. Wikipedia says they didn't switch to the Twin-Traction beam setup until 1980. It is a very interesting suspension style, though!

Yeah, that looks like a good equivalent! Sounds good; even just two steps would be a big improvement.- 38 replies

[sMOC] Remote Bla Bla
2GodBDGlory replied to vascolp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I just tested it with these more common tires, and they work tolerably well, mounted on 1L liftarms. They only measure at 14.5mm mounted compared to 15.0 for the space tires, though, and the difference is noticeable. The newer tires only work correctly if one puts slight downward pressure on the control stick, while the space ones work more reliably. Would it be worthwhile for me to take some more detailed pictures of the controller to help others build it?- 38 replies

Cool, thanks! It's working perfectly for me! I was thinking it would even be theoretically possible to add more steps, like this: 1. Center 2. + 3. + and red 4. red (off of +) 5. - and red (off of red off of +) 6. - (off of red off of +) It would take a more complicated controller, though, and the coding would become far more tricky than just adding that third step, so it might not be worth it.- 38 replies

Cool, thanks! What do you mean by the quality of input? Is that just reliable button presses? I was just testing it with a standard profile, and the +/- buttons work very reliably. The red buttons also feel completely reliable, but I can't tell for sure, since they're not actually controlling anything. That's a good point about doing the three steps! I may try designing a variant for that.- 38 replies

I ran into that same problem last year, but if I'm not mistaken, you should be able to find them for free on Rebrickable.

[sMOC] Remote Bla Bla
2GodBDGlory replied to vascolp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I've got an idea I'd be curious to know your opinion on, @vascolp As you know, one of the main disadvantages of using this remote is that it gives up proportional control. This can be pretty annoying for faster RC cars, where even just one intermediate step can make it a lot easier to keep a car on a straight line. Using the available buttons, I've come up with a physical controller that I think should be able to make for two-step proportional control. The idea is that a small press of the lever on the remote only pushes the LBG +/- button, while a harder press moves the lever further to additionally press the red button, so that both the +/- button and the red button are pressed. With this, the five positions would be: + and red (high power), + (low power), nothing (no power), - (low power, reverse), and - and red (high power, reverse). Do you think this would be feasible on the programming side? I'm not sure if it would work for this project, given the storage limitations (especially on the City Hub), but I'm curious to know what you think. Here's my physical remote: With parts removed, three positions of the lever: It seems to work nicely, but it had to be tuned very carefully, which resulted in two disadvantages: 1. I had to insert a 1x1 brick between the two arms with wheels to press them apart slightly, because the brick is a bit taller than a stud 2. I had to use a tire uncommonly used in Technic (Mine were from a Classic Space set, part 3641, which went out of production in 2014. There's a new version, 87414, which would likely work, but tolerances are tight here) installed on a 1x1 liftarm as a rim to get the exact right size I needed. Perhaps someone can improve on this design!- 38 replies

I thought I'd show off my freshly built copy of this amazing set! I was only using parts on hand, which resulted in this rather nice-looking black color scheme. The main mods in here are: 1. I'm using PyBricks with RemoteBlaBla in order to use a standard Technic hub with simple, non-phone based control. The button on the hub is covered by the landing gear linkage. I think I could have modified it to avoid this, but it was still possible to get enough purchase to push it. 2. I'm using @JunkstyleGio's rotor design, because I don't have the large ones. 3. I'm using a custom swashplate and 5-sided part that I 3D-modeled and 3D-printed. They work surprisingly well! It's not any kind of improvement on the Lego design, but it let me enjoy building this set without spending any money. 4. The rotor head is lowered 2 studs using 3D-printed 3L links, as @efferman did early on in his mods. This is a great set, and one that I'd be happy to leave on my shelf for a while if other projects don't need its parts!

General Part Discussion
2GodBDGlory replied to Polo-Freak's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Huh, interesting! The pinholes would make it easy to use as a shock absorber, if the stiffness lined up, and if it weren't so big! It'd be interesting to see it modded into something like the old 8865 Test Car, just because it would fit the studded aesthetic nicely. The color wouldn't work well, though.- 5,504 replies

Yeah, I definitely feel that! I've built heaps of cars over the years, but I'm now deeply bored of them!
-
Yeah, that's why I'm not devastated by this. My main worry is whether or not those Mindstorms sensors or an equivalent will actually remain available to hobbyists at reasonable prices, I'm not worried about supplies of hubs and motors from Technic sets, but if the only application for sensors is educational stuff (and maybe Boost; I'm not sure if that's still in production), they could become expensive and hard to find.
-
In a lot of ways that's true. The base Technic hub is so overpowered for its (Bricklink) price in terms of programmability, that for a lot of people, like me, Mindstorms just didn't make sense from a cost standpoint. Of course, software is likely going to be the limiting thing here, but PyBricks looks really cool for that. That said, this is really surprising and disappointing! I always thought that Mindstorms was one of Lego's core product lines, and never really expected it to die out! I don't think we've reached a point where Lego robotics is going to become prohibitively hard to do, but I think dropping the Mindstorms line is going to drop the awareness of these possibilities for non-hardcore fans. On the other hand, it would be really cool if Lego decided to make SPIKE PRIME more widely available to fans, since it's always had more interesting hardware anyways. Honestly, as long as I've got access to sensors with the standard plug format, I think I'll be happy, but it's still too bad overall.

Mechbuilds Projects

Nice idea for a heavy-duty CV joint! I feel like I've put hubs together like that before, but never thought of this application for them! The angle is limiting, but it's quite smooth, so I think this would be a good alternative to some of the HD U-joint designs I've seen! -
Cool little truck! That's an interesting mechanism for tilting the bed different ways. That boom extension is very minimalistic, but looks like it should work fine!

I finally got around to trying out my new remote with this program, but there's one thing that's not making sense to me. I get it working, disconnected from my computer, but then if I shut off the hub and power it on again, I can't convince it to start running again unless I reconnect it to my laptop and rerun it. Is this the way it's supposed to be? Thanks- 38 replies
