[WIP] Ford Sierra RS500
Gray Gear replied to nicjasno's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Nice use of these new Panels for the edge of the hood, I really need to get myself some of those as well. But I really dislike the fenders made of connectors. I think flex axles would be a better choice, and look much smoother. I'd be lying if I said I think the Sierry is beautiful, but the sound it makes is awesome. I can see why this car is iconic, as a JDM car guy I watched a few Bathhurst races featuring the GT-R, and for how technologically supirior the GT-R was the Sierras actually didn't do as bad as I expected going into it. But well, my heart is with the 32 -
@noahtheb I agree with @Some Belgian LEGO Fan. Connecting 2XL Motors to the center diff will break the bevel gears in the center diff for sure. 2L motors at highter revs to the center diff might be a bit softer on the gears in the center diff, but I still think it doesn't really sound like a good idea. I'd just keep it simple and reliable by using 1 motor per axle.

Generic Contest Discussion
Gray Gear replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Jurss I am not saying it is hard to do, I am saying it is not fun for me. The result will be worse that what could have been achieved with panels, as nicely demonstrated by your example. Some might enjoy building under some kind of constraint, but I like to use the best brick for the job. It is not for me. -
A lot of manufacturers recommend doing or not doing things that would be more safe or whatever, but people just do it anyways. I can see why they would recommend to not shift while driving, if something fails in the gearbox it could lock up and something could break. But where's the fun in that? The manual of my Sodastream Bottle also advised me to check the entire bottle for microcracks before every use... Yeah right

Generic Contest Discussion
Gray Gear replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I might be intrested in a modular car chassis contest. While I don't have any real experience building modular, I think it could be a nice challenge. Scale would have to be free tho, because I do 1:8 Scale and nothing else. But I wouldn't want to do bodywork, and especially not bodywork without using Panels. While I can see myself building a modular chassis as a side project for a contest within a reasonable timeframe (like a few weeks) that definitely wouldn't be possible with bodywork. If I had to build a car for a contest without using panels I'd rather invest my time in a MOC car I actually enjoy. It just takes up too much time and not using panels just sounds like a pain imo. -
@noahtheb Well if you want to use real LEGO servos you'll have to cough up those 50 bucks I am afraid The china system I just bought will run you ~30 bucks for a 4 channel Rechargable battery box with bluetooth App & Remote controller, about 20 bucks for 2 motors and maybe 15 for a servo. This system of course is no match for BUWIZZ ludicrous mode power, but for the price I think it is a good deal. For motorization I would recommend 1 L-Motor per axle, and to use the planetary gear wheel hubs to increase torque. The planetary wheel hubs will gear down the Motors 5:1, so I doubt any further gearing down will be needed. Using the new reinforced diffs might also be an idea, but idk if that is really needed.

I am pretty sure the servo motor you are looking at on amazon isn't genuine LEGO. I just looked real quick myself, and most of them seem to be chinese copies, and the bad ones at that. The one offer I saw that was LEGO was like 90 EUR lol These servo motors are starting at 50 EUR on Bricklink. I am not saying all china Motors are bad, but you should know what you are buying to avoid scams and compatibility problems. Some China motors are just crap LEGO copies, and some can actually be better than genuine LEGO motors.

General Part Discussion
Gray Gear replied to Polo-Freak's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@TechnicRCRacer Honestly I am always suprised how weirdly limited LEGO's color palette is. I wouldn't even think about a such a common part like a bushing being unavailable in black, like the most common color ever. When I order Bricks the color choice often looks like this: [TRIGGER WARNING for purists ]- 5,507 replies

Efferman's Custom Parts
Gray Gear replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I like the design, but I am not a fan of the drive axle being off-center. Doesn't that cause problems with using 2 of those close together, like in a 6 wheeled truck? The 2nd axle usually gets powered by a a connetion to the diff of the 1st axle. But this does not really work if the drive axle is off-center, because the 2nd diff has to be on the opposite side. I hope you can understand what I mean. -
Please dont feel offended by this, but would you mind not bumping this topic unless you have something intresting to show? You don't need to post every single brick you put in place. Post something when you have made some moajor progress that is actually intresting for others to look at. For comparison: Other builders update their WIP topics maybe every few weeks at most, but often even less than once a month. And the updates are more than a single line of text with maybe one picture.

[MOC] Honda Integra
Gray Gear replied to BB8's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Nice too see another JDM fan here! While I am not the biggest fan of the Integra, I do think you captured the body very well Its missing the Type R Wing tho! No front suspension is a shame, but at the scale you are working at I can understand it. The visible 4 speed transmission is pretty cool, even though it doesn't really fit the car. I doubt anyone could fit in a 5speed/6speed manual in this. Very nice creation, thx for sharing! -
Looks very nice, I like the legth increase to 9 studs. And having PF and C+ connectors at the same time was a great move! Quickcharging is also a real treat... I am sure this will work superb im many great MOCs. But the main problem is the price. I know this is a niche product, so it can't be helped, but still, 150 bucks is just a massive oof. If you have need of the increased power and the specialized controls, go for it. But for simpler tasks, like a small RC car, I think a rechargable box from china will do you better. I mean, you can get Bruno's italian supercar from Cada for about the same price, with all the electronics included

Paid instructions
Gray Gear replied to Akbalder's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes, your statement is clear: MOC creators that selling their Building Instructions "are only trying to cash over the back of others". And I think that's out of line. Just because you offer your building instructions for free does not give you the right to insult others. -

If it is true, then I tip my hat to you. But you seem to miss the point I was trying to make. Not everyone is as financially comfortable as you seem to be. If you think that selling building instructions is "cashing over the back of others", then we seem to have a very different understanding of the matter Asking payment for honest work is normal. Do you for example not buy books because the author is not offering it for free? -

Gray Gear replied to Akbalder's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Not really. I don't think it would make much of a difference, at least in my case. If you can afford to spend like 300+$ on a MOC you should also be able to pay 15-20 bucks for the Building Instructions. But for B-Models the question is more interesting, as the builders often already have the needed A-Model, and the cost of the Instructions is the only expense. In that case having free instructions instead of selling it might increase the popularity significantly -

Good for you. They way you are talking I am pretty sure you have never made Building Instructions in your life. It is a lot of work, and work you do for others to enjoy your MOC. But feel free to prove me wrong, link some free building instructions you made. Exactly. C-Model Building Instructions were sold way before LEGO stopped making B-Models. They just got more popular now because now there is no alternative.
