[TC15[ Motorized BiCopter

With only a single M motor? Sounds implausible.- 16 replies

I've had similar experiences motorizing tracks with my BWE mod. Moving both tracks in the same direction would work fine, but moving one and keeping one stopped was iffy at best, and running both in opposite directions was a no-go. However, since I had separate motors on sbricks, I could also do things like run one motor at 50% and the other at 100% which worked excellently

It's the challenges you find for yourself. I wouldn't be surprised at pneumatic MODs of 42100 either. Though I don't know if the cylinders get large enough.

Keep the automatic propulsion in the lower carriage, feed a single axle up into a 5-function gearbox?

I'm reminded of the solution used in 8837. There the steering control is on the upper structure directly above the center of the turntable, and not geared in the superstructure at all. Additionally rotating the turntable is done with a planetary gear system and the same control as steering, by lifting it. That probably doesn't help you though.

Another reason I can think of that the deck is rather high would be because lego wheels are rather wide, the wheels of the truck need to be below the deck, while on a real transporter they can be beside it. Though your example doesn't match that. Using a gear rack outer part as 'rails' for the sliding support may work well, but the inner part would probably collide with the wheels. An LA in the support itself would work better if the support were the other way around, angling forward at the top, but this would require the supports to be 2 studs wide which is probably too much. Gear racks similarly are 2 studs wide so probably aren't in the support.

42100 - Still a toy?
pleegwat replied to nerdsforprez's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The only difference between men and boys is the size and price of their toys. -
Seems there is a rudimentary programming system in the app, does this mean they're targeting it at the mindstorms audience as well? Those have always been very expensive sets for the amount of lego in them.

I see the problem. You need a bigger dining table.

Classic Technic

I actually own a brick separator from that age. I'm pretty sure it was bought separately, probably in the early 90's. It's dark gray, different hue than DBG, and since it reads lego on the studs I'm quite sure it's a real lego piece. But they didn't come in every set back then. -

Ah, yes, my favourite pre-dark-age model. It's a shame most of my 9V wires have decayed beyond usability. -
You can't easily run 4 positions off a servo, 3 is more likely. Though I could see a manually controlled switch to a wave selector to allow 2 motors to control 8 functions. Since a PF remote has 2 channels, a 2 or 4 motor model seems more likely than a 3 motor one. However we do not yet know what PU brings for technic; if there is a 4-channel technic hub this makes a 3 motor model more likely IMO. I do not think the new pneumatic switches were made to be motor controlled, among other reasons because the positions aren't 90° apart. More likely I expect them to be used to be able to separate the place a pneumatic function is controlled from the actual switch, and possibly to allow multiple pneumatic circuits to be switched together.

I actually agree that worm gears may be a good idea here, provided you're using motors to control the thing anyway. It means you can't (easily) have a moving joystick in the cabin. However if you use levers, you're basically forced to use levers throughout and avoid gears at all cost to minimize backlash. Worm gears dampen a lot of backlash.
