GOH 10 B: Falconry Training (Chronicles of Embervale Digression #4)
Grover replied to Aurore's topic in Guilds of Historica
I remembered your original build and wondered how you would improve upon it. I would argue that we got a second excellent build, falconry with a different bird in another season, rather than an improvement, since the first is so good. I'm rather partial to the bald eagle (just saw one fly over my house last weekend), but the new peregrin is excellent. The woven pine is great, and I'm rather surprised how well the golden leaves work with the aspens. I like how you have used the border for slight elevation changes, and the dark green is great. Little squirrel hiding there is fun too! Outstanding job! -
GoH 10C: Meet Hallad, the half frozen Berserk

This is a gorgeous build from top to bottom. You really use the aqua parts well. They can be too much if you're heavy handed with them, but you use them judiciously as accents, which really add to the cold feeling of the piece. The low slung, high pitched roof adds to the sense of cold, and I LOVE the tight strips of wood. Not only detailed, but more than likely trees are going to be fewer in the northern climates, so will be smaller as well, leading to smaller boards. Very realistic. The trans light blue looks excellent as almost frozen water, and you have excellent depth shading under it. I'm not 100% convinced as to what the 2x2 rounded jumper tiles are, but I'm willing to go with it. The bridge is well done, and the firewood is a nice touch, though I might ask why it's not covered when everything is going to be drenched in snow. You do an excellent job blending the snow in at the junction of the roof with the ground. As always, enjoying Simon's exploits! Keep up the excellent work! -
The ginger hair theme is great. Love it paired with the browns. The old brown forestman hat works well here too. Matching the patchwork bag with the patchwork pants is genius! I like how you match accent colors, too, like the dark brown sleeves and skirt highlights. The gimpy leg and crutch are great! I like the foreboding of the short story too. Amazing minifig work, as usual!

Yeah, it's the soft fabric. Single hole.

FYI, for anyone who is interested, I ordered a "Dark Green Cape" (actually more of a sand green) and it is singular, not with any others. ( 6406520 )

Wow, stunning build! I love that you have a nice variety of color here and it all works, particularly the way you have it blocked. The dark grey near the water has a nice wet appearance, and I love the waterline marked with olive green growth. The way you have staged the height is visually appealing and helps move the eye from place to place. The seagulls are great, and the peregrine falcon looks fantastic. First time I have seen those ingot pieces used as arrow loops, and they look nice. The interior is beautiful (love the bookshelf) and the rooflines are nice. I think my favorite aspect is the brick built ship, which is gorgeous. Really well proportioned and designed. Outstanding!

Wheelwright’s guild house [Avalonia]

Ah, ok, I can see it being a chain anchor or something. I thought maybe it was a specific tool I was unfamiliar with! -
Rather fitting that I chose an old build I ran out of time on to redo, then ran out of time on this one! I had to participate to support my guild however! In any case, it is what it is, and I have terrible lighting (light box is packed from the move) and very random bricks, so without further ado, I give you Rumors Redux: Lady Gwenllian was surveying the progress on the town’s palisade when she heard a commotion from one of the nearby farms. Quickly heading over to see what was the matter, she found a farmer obviously terrified. “What’s going on?” she asked the farmer. “M’lady!” the farmer said, and quickly bowed. “It’s the chickens! Please, come see!” Lady Gwenllian followed the farmer over to a small grassy area where his chickens and a few pigs were milling about. A man with a black beard, dressed all in green, carrying strange odds and ends strapped to his belt, stood watching the chickens. The man, however, was not the strangest part of the scene: in fact, the man was watching one enormous chicken amongst the others. His head turned to watch Lady Gwenllian and the farmer approach. “M’lady, this huge chicken came over to my flock today! I’ve never seen anything like it! It has to be some sort of demon chicken!” Lady Gwenllian looked over the chicken, which stood some five feet tall. Besides being a monstrosity, it appeared to behave like a normal chicken, pecking at the ground for bugs and plants like the others. The man with the green hat spoke. “This is no demon, my good man,” he began. “M’lady,” he said, tipping his hat to Lady Gwenllian. “It is in fact what magic users refer to as a dire animal, one that is enlarged unnaturally by a magical malady of some sort.” Lady Gwenllian looked at him. “And are you the wizard responsible for this bizarre creature?” she asked bluntly. He shook his head. “No, m’lady, I am not. I am here, in fact, because I am trying to track down the source of this beast. It is not the only dire animal I have encountered in this region, and I would like to know the source. There is word of an evil sorceress in the Enchanted Forest who, once a pure and good elf, has been twisted by powerful magic into a ruthless, power hungry monster. If this is true, these realms could be in peril.” Lady Gwenllian considered him, then the chicken. “What is your name, good wizard?” she asked him. “I am Razin, the traveling wizard, at your service, m’lady.” “It so happens that my household is in need of a wizard, Razin. How would you like to become Razin, the grand mage of Prenmôr? I have a very keen interest in solving this mystery and finding out if there is any truth to this rumor of an evil sorceress in the forest.” Razin bowed. “I would be honored, m’lady.” “Good, then it’s settled. I will have your belongings brought up to the temporary housing for my personal household.” She gestured to the wattle and daub houses on the high rock outcropping above. “Now what about this chicken?” she asked. Razin shrugged. “Other than being extremely large, it is just a chicken.” Lady Gwenllian looked at the farmer. “Get a spear. We are having chicken for dinner tonight.” The original is here. TBH, I'm not sure the redo is an improvement! Rotten tomatoes and jeers welcome!

The original is pretty amazing, but this is stellar. You pack an unbelievable amount of detail into your scenes without making them look cluttered. The roof is fantastic, the stonework amazing, the ground is great, and Sir Glorfindel even got a cookie! Outstanding!

This is a spectacular build! Love the story and how it goes with the build. The trans dark green tiles have always been a favorite of mine, and you do a great job showing depth here. Amazingly, the various green colors work well together. I would not have expected that of the olive green with the others. Your variation in the height of these in the swamp is great, very organic looking. Hopefully his new princess doesn't hop away on him!

Well done! I like all the little builds and the one larger build together to showcase the peasants. The wagon on the ox is well done. Excellent use of the yellow sleeves on the milkmaid. I think you did something similar on a previous build, did you not? The scarecrow is a lot of fun, and the scythe looks great. Love the Hercules hair on the vintner, and the Luke robes on the milkman make me think of blue milk!

Nice! Love the mix of the old viking torsos and LOTR. The huskies work well, and I really like your irregular olive base. You did a great job incorporating the slope wedges!

Wheelwright’s guild house [Avalonia]
Grover replied to T-86(swebrickLUG)'s topic in Guilds of Historica
I really like this build. The roof is fantastic, you have some nice progressive overhangs on the Tudor sides as the levels go up, and you break up some of the texture on the walls. The wooden gutter on the roof is subtle but looks good, and the window on the top floor is recessed perfectly. The cellar door is very nice, at a good angle and fitted perfectly. As others have noted, the whip vines are superb, and I enjoy the tiling on the stairs. I had a question about the barrel. I can't figure out what the handle is on top. Is it a butter churn or something? As for suggestions, I noticed a few subtle things that stuck out to me after several viewings. The 1x1 clip that holds the Avalonian colors in sand green gives the sand green flag an asymmetric look. I would suggest gold, brown, or black as a more neutral color. The other thing that I noticed was that the front door to the shop is flush with the exterior, which seemed a little unusual. I wonder if recessing it a bit might help smooth it out. My last thought, and this might be tricky, would be to see about closing the gap on the stone chimney with the roof. It seems to hang a bit right now. Overall, a very nice build with some really awesome features. Nice work! -
Great showcase of a ton of interesting parts! The tapestries are pretty nice up top. Might just be the contrast but I can't see inside the suit of armor if that's where he's hiding. Nice use of the quarter tiles on the floor too! The photography is really sharp with some great lighting here. Nice job showcasing your work!

What a cool build! I love seeing the more common town entrances. So many times I see grand gatehouses, but we forget most were just wooden gates. This looks great. I like that you did some interesting elevation changes with the small hill and hinges rather than just stacked plates. The snotted palisade bricks on the Tudor walls also look great. The roof is very sharp looking, and the plants are at nice angles. You did a good job hiding the angled pieces for the plants too. Love the detailed interior, and I think you chose a good color scheme for Avalonia. Nice touches with the Avalonian colors here and there too. Well done!

Wow. Where to begin? This thing is amazing on so many levels. Love the roofs, including the all brown shields, and the half pressed down tiles. The viking boat is superb and I noticed some excellent legacy part usage there! Very nice, subtle tiling as woodwork detail on the long hall, and I like the wooden tower. The disney birch trunks look good on the yellow trees too. The waves are fantastic, and I wanted to thank you for again showing us how you build. You did that previously to show us your technique for your round mill tower roof, which I really appreciate, since I love learning new techniques and I think we all appreciate it here. Thanks for sharing!

Great use of the Ninjago serpent head! I usually don't have a lot of comments for micro builds, but this one is great!

Very nice! You have a very distinct build style that works well and has a nice fantasy vibe to it. Great detail in the Tudor, and I love your roofline. I think my favorite part is the way you built the irregular base with the snow. Kudos for the new smoke technique. I always like the old serpent smoke, but I like that you are branching out and trying new things with the droid arms and horns. The stonework is busy, but this lends itself to a more rural, older feel that fits the witch's story perfectly. Great job!

Awesome! You have a lot packed into a small build! You have a lot of great detail here, particularly in the floor. The interior columns and the windows are also fantastic. Your color choices work well, too, and the minifig posing works well. I also appreciate that you took time to write a good story. Keep up the great work!

Oooh cool! Love the serpent. The organic rock placement looks great too, and I love the little splash of light blue flower. Well executed!

Really beautiful! Love how you did this with a minimal color palette. The LED lighting is brilliant, although it sounds like it was a pain! What is the skirt piece on Alrune from? You have some great decorations on the walls. Are the tiles there phases of the moon? Very clever. Nice tile work on the floor, too. Overall amazing work and very nice story that I am enjoying reading!
