As we have come to expect of you, this is an outstanding build. I always love how you manage to pack a lot of detail into a small space without making it cluttered. I particularly like the like the visual balance here. The snow looks very natural, and you have done something very difficult: you have managed to take a build that is only a few colors (mostly shades of brown) and made it look organized and not chaotic. The color blocking of the sawn lumber, roof, and building really helps here. On top of that, the vertical slats on the building help separate it from the rest of the build. I also love the mud puddles! I vote for this set after the Viking Village!

Beautiful! You have a great eye for color and a small, crisp build with detail. The light blue pops, and the interspersed colors in the wares is great. The traditional palm build is good, and their clutter looks great. Love the base with all the twigs and paintbrushes sticking up. The wands on the sprue look great for the counter face detail! The cord woven shutters and the sprue plant wrapped vine is great as well. Good job!

Fantastic build! This is huge. I love that you have not only built a trading post, but you have taken the time to really put detail into it. You have some amazing texture on the walls, and the roof is very reminiscent of the Medieval Blacksmith Shop. The colors are great, the boardwalk is fantastic, and, as usual, I think you have taken the cake on minifigure placement. You are really the best at this. You can see the story of each figure by looking at them. There's so much detail here; the folded cloaks in the bin, the books stacked on the shelf next to the flask, the jars on top of boxes, all great, and you have a great blend of old and new parts. Really masterful work!

Very nice! The overall scene looks great, and I particularly enjoy the leaf density on the tree. You have some nice color choices that I think depict the short northern growing seasons in Mitgardia well. Love the guy rolling the barrel. Nice work!

Well done! I like that this is a trading post, clearly. The thatched roof is well done, and I like the olive branches on it (the chickens on the roof crack me up). The smoke from the chimneys is good too. The overall scene could probably easily be converted to a western with new minis and a few changes! I like the mix of new and old minifig parts, and I think they work well (like the long black hair with the old mustache face). The stables look great, including the black monarch barding, and I love the Hagrid body on the guy with the horses. The irregular fence on the sheep stall is great, and you have made the angles of the sheep quite organic. The new stem pieces and the tan claws for sticks and straw look great! Nice job!

This is a real work of art. You have a great eye for these Kali builds, and I love that you have a consistent color scheme and style for Barqa. It's huge, but also detailed, which is awesome. The white and gold accents are well done and tasteful (love the gold fish) and the light blue flowers add excellent contrast. The lighting is superb, and all the mini details down to the bard and the bell ringer are great. The white flowers are great decorations but subtle. Outstanding!

Book III - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

Don't worry. You have no idea how insane my life has been for months now. Life is finally slowing down for me a bit, and I hope it slows down more. We are getting settled after a move and I haven't unpacked my Lego yet! (For shame!) -

@Professor Thaum@Ben S@LegoMiner, welcome! I am sorry to have been absent for a while, but I am glad to see new faces! It has been great to see some of your builds! -
Well done, and congrats on a well deserved win. The color combo here of the sand green and medium nougat is great. I love the use of the tree costume for the pillars on the corner. The elves are cute, and I like the overall shot. The photography and photoediting is superb. The brick built butterflies are beautiful, and the detail work in small scale of the potions etc. on the windowsill are awesome. The forced perspective on those purple flower costumes up front looks amazing. Creative use of the pretzels, and I love how the deer blend into the background. The sign is also cleverly done. Really great work. Hope to see more from you!

Oh wow! That's really interesting. I have always wondered how to get a weathered wood look. That thatched roof looks like thatch from the texture, but I'm so used to seeing tan or dark tan, I immediately wondered if it was supposed to be slate tiles or something. Looking at the picture, it makes me wonder if you could incorporate some DBG parts to change up the coloration even more to emulate where the roof has weathered. I'm really happy to see this since I've always wanted to see LBG used like that. Well done! The Tudor stlying looks good, and I like your interpretation of the light blue shutters. I think you did an excellent job with the density of the flora around the building too. As for the square base, it doesn't bother me since I build like that for various modular things I set builds into. If you had to take it to a show or something you might be able to build on an irregular base and then just set it on the square plate with a bunch of tiles under it and angle it a bit with one stud or something, but it doesn't detract from the build at all. The dormer is nice, and I like how you textured the dark green below the lighter green. It helps the eye see it as natural. Awesome job!

GoH 11: Tranquil tasting [Dandelume, Avalonia]

Gorgeous build. I love the fall colors. The flowers as downed leaves look great, and I like the juxtaposition near the water. If I were to suggest anything, I may throw a few stray rocks as 1x1 plates or tiles near the edge of the rocky area, and maybe a few olive strands of grass here and there to suggest dried out grass in the fall. I was always disappointed that Lego never made any of those grass stalks in tan. They would be perfect for dried fall grass! In any case, I absolutely love the setting of the town wall. I don't know why, but I've always enjoyed town wall builds. You have some nice detail in the wall itself, not too much, but enough to break up the texture. Sadly, although it would ruin the fall colors of the build, it's unlikely that the tree would be that close to the wall due to necessary fields of fire off the wall, but most people wouldn't notice that. The wall is interesting in that it has no crenellations. Or are we looking at the inside of the wall? It seems unlikely given that the river would probably be outside the wall, but maybe it has a river gate and this is inside? Then all the logic of the crenellations and the wall go away... in any case, all military logistics aside, it is a really beautiful build with some nice settings for the minis, that are also well done. Keep up the good work!- 13 replies

What a gorgeous Mitgardia build! I like your wall texture: Not too much, not too plain. I particularly love the single studs from the headlight bricks poking out. The snow also looks good, both on the ground and on the roofline. Angling the white horns directly down helps the eye see the roofline naturally. The steep A frame roof seen in the north is a great touch, and I love the colors. The pulley system looks good, and the stone arch looks great. I realize you have to expose it to be seen, but from a logistical perspective, I have to ask if the pulley would be exposed to the weather and potential attack like that, but maybe it's a secondary system? I really like the detail and coloring on the tudor up top. You have a lot of nice vertical lines in there that give it a particular style. Great work!

Beautiful! What a great build. Love the finishing touch with the paintbrush stuck int the dome on top. I've always enjoyed slope roof pieces, and they look good here. Did you intentionally make the peak out of the alternating overhanging and corner slopes for texture, or were those the pieces that you had? The dark green in the roof looks good too. The fleur de lys piece looks great, and I love the old shuttered windows. I know they connections aren't as solid, but the new ones look blocky to me. The tudor brick looks good, and I love the glow in the dark crowns for flowers! I may steal that in my builds! The interior is great, and I like the grey bowl. I know they have actual bowl pieces, but this looks good. What's the lime green frog guy's head from? I know I've seen it and can't place it... And that gold detail on the top of the shelf! That's fantastic. I'm not sure I've ever seen it before. Great job with the mirror pic. I like your incorporation of new pieces, like the curved slopes around the front garden, and the old ones like the old windows. Great job!

[Freebuild - GoH 11 Overdue] Ore trading post
Grover replied to Professor Thaum's topic in Guilds of Historica
I like the build! The round tower set against the A frame looks nice, and I like the overall design. You have some clean lines in the build, which gives it a very classic feel. I think that you could have built a lot more detail in various areas, but that would also take away from the classic feel, so I think this works. The story is hilarious with the pig and the wizard! Nice work! -
Welcome! It's great to see a new face here! I really like your build. The roofline is a bit reminiscent of the Mill Village Raid from years ago, and I like the scale that you have chosen. It feels very much like a traditional Lego set. I think you've done a nice job adding texture and color to the stonework without going overboard and making it too busy. The corners on the rounded part with the window is particularly nice. I love what you did with the firewood stack. The well is quite nice, a very clean, compact build. I think you've done an excellent job keeping the muted green and brown palette on the outside to signify a deep forest, but you oppose that nicely with color that pops in the chair and bookshelf on the inside. The fireplace is well done, and I like the inclusion of a shovel. You have done a very nice job, particularly on the interior, of getting a lot of detail into a set-sized build, which is pretty tricky due to the space being at a premium. I like how you have left an open ended story there as well. Can't wait to see the next one! Keep up the good work!

A feast in the fortress of the dragon clan
Grover replied to Sympatik Brick's topic in Guilds of Historica
This is a fantastic and hilarious scene! On the technical side, you have some nice things going on here: the dark green separating the top and bottom of the room, the consistent tans, and the SNOT use of the curved slopes over the window. The inverted gold fence to form a pattern in the windows looks good, as does the crossed decorative swirls above the door. The light looks good on the left through the window too. The stories and little scenes (like the orcs, and the apple) are great! A few things of note: one, when you zoom way in on the pictures, you can see a lot of fine detail, and in a number of pictures, the bricks aren't fully pressed together. Light bleed through cracks can be fixed with a piece of cardboard. Two, related to photography, setting the camera further back and zooming in can make your depth of field better, so you can keep the front and back of the scene in focus. Depending on the size of your creation, this may be limited, but usually on small builds, it helps. Overall, nice work, and I love your humor! -
Music during building, yay or nay?

I like to build to the classical station. -
Looks great! I like the industrial look, and I appreciate the pictures of the underside where you can see the plate reinforcement. Does it flex much? I'm curious how strong it is and how much it flexes. It's a nicely thin and light structure, and it would be pretty cool if it were rigid so that trains carrying the loads of batteries could pass over without flexing enough to slow the train down through sags etc.

[Rockwail HSS] Sculptor at work: statue for the King
Grover replied to Exetrius's topic in Guilds of Historica
Really beautiful work! I love the SNOT brick base and frame. I think it really adds to the lines of the sculpture, all of the straight, precise lines suggesting the same in the sculpture and defining it a bit more subconsciously. Love the grey 4 petal flowers! I didn't know they came in the 4 petal variety, I only saw the new 5 petals. The brick built scaffold and sculptor are great, and I love how you have made the angle of the wheelbarrow and the table off-kilter from both the ladder and the base to give the build a more 'natural' feel without an 'organic' non-uniform base (if that makes any sense). I think you did a great job walking that fine line between losing the precision of the sculpture through too organic a build while maintaining a realistic vibe by not attaching everything to a grid. What are the eyes? Is that a printed part? You do a great job incorporating all the various new small tiles that have been made over the recent years. Great job, and beautiful sculpting!- 7 replies

I always love seeing your builds! You have a great eye for detail and color, and I enjoy seeing what creative new uses for parts you have. The color scheme here with the white, tan, gold, and light purple are outstanding. I love the mirror! The use of the car doors for rolls of fabric is outstanding, and the dresses with false head boosted just a stud off the floor really sell them as dresses on a mannequin and not just a random minifig body hanging around. The stickered microscale bricks look great for small detail! The brick built vase and flowers are also fantastic. Well done!

TLG Licensed Merchandise Concept Ideas Survey
Grover replied to Jim's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I put zeros for everything and wrote "I see TLG is headed back to the marketing strategies that led them to near bankruptcy 25 years ago." We want Lego because it is high quality, high tolerance brick (though even that seems to be changing), not because it has "Lego" branded on it like Gucci. -
What a beautiful build! I love the scale of it. The sheer number of trees and greenery are great. I also enjoy the incorporation of the new sand green limbs and that you kept them at ground level to separate the understory brush through the color blocking of the various green shades. Very clever. The birch trees are really well done. I can imagine replacing all the limb elements in this with the flame yellow orange, dark orange, and dark red and making spectacular fall scene with the birch trees and understory! The brick built cows are great, and I enjoy the mini leading one with a carrot. One of my favorite aspects of this build is the detail on the canopies of the vendor stalls. The red and white in particular looks great, and the subtlety of the fringe under the blue one plus the cut corners really look sharp. A couple of the minis have torsos that have a little too modern of prints for my taste, but that's pretty minor. The seagull on the stall is fun, and I think that the black background is pretty decent here. Usually lighter backgrounds make the build pop a bit more, and in this case it gives the impression of nighttime. The pictures are a little dark, but not bad, and if you're going for more shadowy, highly shaded forest, this definitely grabs that aesthetic. Great work! Look forward to more!

Funny, the first thing I thought when I saw that was "Manarola"! I would say that it is excellent news to bring to mind the inspiration material just by looking at it! This is a lovely build. I like the bold colors, the use of space (tall tower, fisher spilling forward), the angles of the buildings to one another, and the detail in the scene. The individual mini introductions is great and gives us a close look at them, which is very nice. I particularly liked the choice of captain cockatrice's torso, head, and hair, which I think really go well together. The texture on the stone docks is good, giving an aged feel but without being overly textured with gratuitous greebling. The brick built shutters are very nice too, and really help keep the build to a smaller scale. The various plants (grass, vines, etc.) growing on the corners and in all the cracks in the walkway help lend a sense of the maritime climate to the build. Well done!
