Book 2 - Challenge V Category A: On the lamb (Alliance)
Grover posted a topic in Guilds of Historica
Somewhere deep in the forests of Avalonia, a soldier of the black spire and his orcish minion prepared to ambush a rider for the alliance. "What we smash, master?" "Hush, Gulurk! We are to ambush an alliance rider who has a secret message. We have word that it will be a faun or an elf." "Goat-man or pointy-ear?" The orc chuckled. "Will be easy! Weaklings!" The soldier nodded. "Yes, they are weak. We will trap him between this cliff and the tree. He will have nowhere to go." The orc snorted his assent and the two settled down to wait. A moment later, the ground began to shake to the beat of hooves. "Get ready!" the soldier whispered. He and the orc tensed. "NOW!" The soldier and orc jumped out to ambush the onrushing rider. "Wait, that's too big to be a horse... GAAAAAH!" Elris the faun looked back at the two black spire warriors that lay dead on the ground, trampled by his dire sheep. "I think they were frightened of ewe, Mammoth," he said as he patted his sheep, Mammoth, on his thick wooly coat. "Really pulled the wool over their eyes! I wonder if they even herd us coming?" he laughed. "Oooh, that was ba-aa-aa-aa-d," he chortled in a sheep's tone at his own pun, as he rode forward with the precious message in his hand. ********** I have been trying to improve my landscaping builds recently and worked on this tree and the cliff face. I was pleased with the tree trunk but didn't really get the fullness of the leaves that I wanted. I tried to make the cliff face imitate a limestone cliff with the horizontal ridges. Not entirely happy with it, but it's a start I guess. I am also trying to get better pictures and have been playing with lighting. A few of the pictures I thought turned out well, but some of the others I didn't have enough light I don't think. C&C, along with suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for looking!- 15 replies

This is great! Super clean, simple and elegant, and the nest-like saddle is awesome. I think the use of the dinosaur (I assume from the Jurassic Park stuff?) is great. Good job!
-
I like the entry! The hidden orcs/trolls are great. I like the base, too. Simple, but still detailed enough not to look like a giant square of brown. Well done!

I like the simplicity of the build and the use of colors. The poodle is also hilarious. The feel of this really picks up the camp setting, I think. Great job!

I love the creative use of parts and colors! This is a great build! I like the format for the story, too, as I find it easy to determine the speaker. Great job! -

I love this! The background with the stars and snow is awesome, and the photography is amazing. I wish I could take pictures that well. The whole landscape looks great. Good job!- 25 replies

You complain about the lack of textures, but I think it works out well. I would not have guessed that you were at a lack of pieces at all. It works well with the Kaliphlin setting I think.

Great build! I really like the pine trees and the snow. The trees look a lot better than I would have thought possible for cheese wedges!

The Exetrius Saga (13): Taking a stand, for Nocturnus!
Grover replied to Exetrius's topic in Guilds of Historica
Excellent work! I really like the photography. I've been trying to get pics that good, but it's tough, especially with the walls and semi-enclosed space like you have, and your pics look great! I enjoyed the story, too--very compelling!- 16 replies

A Poor Choice Of Mount [Book II Challenge V Category A]
Grover replied to Isundir's topic in Guilds of Historica
This had me laughing! I love the expression on the figure's face and the hilarious setting. The way the vegetation is arranged makes it look realistic, and I love the story and humor behind the build! My only suggestion is very minor, which would be to vary the level of the ground slightly by maybe a plate or two and add a few pebbles (1x1 round tiles or plates) of light and dark bley or something to break up the brown underneath. It is not that noticeable given that the eye wants to look at the scorpion (which is awesome, BTW) and the scene as a whole.- 12 replies

The retaking of Eolas: A hollow victory
Grover replied to The Maestro's topic in Guilds of Historica
I think you're a little hard on yourself. I like the detail, especially the use of the antenna in the flower for the blood and the other one in the guy's neck. I think it does a good job depicting the battle scene. I also like the story. The loss of life really comes across, which many times gets lost in the heroics of a story. -
The dark orange works really well here. Looks like moist clay, with the tan being the beaten down, dried earth from the oxen. I like the overall feel, along with the functionality. The bits of crops and the tree make it look like it's part of a larger scene as well. Very impressed (as usual with your work!).

Book II Chal V Cat A: Summons for the Loyal
Grover replied to LittleJohn's topic in Guilds of Historica
This is a really cool build. I have been looking and re-looking at this over the past several days. I always see something new, or something new about it strikes me. I love the detail on the palm tree, the way the path wends through the desert but still has definable edges, the slight curb on the edge of the path, the smoothness as Henjin noted, even the direction of the small OD-green plants lining up in clumps... really well done. I am very impressed by this and it has given me many ideas for my own builds. Awesome!- 21 replies

AoM: Store Phase 3: Sigurd's General Goods
Grover replied to soccerkid6's topic in Guilds of Historica
This is beautiful. I would not have thought of using orange as a roof tile, but it looks great! As always, your interiors are super; the thought and detail that went into them are outstanding. The colors on the walls, the tan and dark tan, are also great. One of the things I really like is that you're not afraid to leave studs facing out on SNOT walls. You really make it work well in your models. Fantastic job! -

This is truly awesome. I love the creativity in the skeletal serpent. It looks scary and really fits the story. Great job! -
I like the texture and the feel of the piece! The color scheme works well for the northern, snowy lands, I think. I like the story, too, great job!

Excellent! I like the long wavy stems on the mushrooms! The overall effect is very nice. I like the way the story is told between two people in a conversation style as well. I thought that they were walking past a manicured garden at first because of the straight line, but this gives me good ideas for gardens, too! Well done!

I really like the clean lines and the feel of the piece. I think the style lends itself to conveying the story and not distracting from the courier by being too busy. Awesome job! -

Thanks to all for the replies! I find everyone's perspectives very interesting. Sometime in the early 80s, I began sorting my collection by piece type. I have probably 5-6 organizing bins (aka, screw drawers) filled with the older pieces that used to come in the primary colors (before brown or green entered the color palette). I wound up going through my dark ages in grad school and a little beyond; I really just got back into building a couple of years ago. Sadly, I missed out on most of the Kingdoms and Vikings sets (although I am slowly collecting these now). The reason I'm curious about everyone else's building is not because I am not making my own MOCs now or worried about not doing things 'right', but rather because a lot has changed over the years. I think the advent of the internet has allowed people to share stories and pictures of MOCs very quickly, allowing for a fast transfer of ideas and techniques not possible 30 years ago. I see a lot of really amazing builds on here and was curious if people were all doing something radically different than myself in terms of the builds, organization, or design. It sounds like there is not a huge difference and that I am simply behind the learning curve when it comes to a lot of the new techniques that have been developed and shared over the past 10 years or so. I am building, although the going has been slow since I have been trying to unpack and then reorganize everything after a move. I have most of my pieces unpacked now, allowing my greater access to my stock. Now I have 5 organizing bins filled with pieces--3 for grey, 1 for brown, and 1 for green--along with bulk pieces in gallon bags when I have a ton of one particular piece. I don't find that having a ton of pieces of one color together is easy to find anything. Ironically, I have the opposite problem as I used to--my budget now far outweighs the time I have to build. I'm hoping to have enough time this weekend to finish sorting the last of my pieces and get back to building in my free time. Thanks you to everyone here for putting together such great stories. I have to be inspired to build something, and the stories here are great. I'm in the middle of my Category A piece, which I hope will be humorous and fun. Thanks to everyone here for your patience as I get back up to speed with the new techniques I have missed out on over the years.

Thanks to KaiNRG and Soccerkid6 for their replies to my original building questions, and to Kai and Faladrin for helping to teach me the ways of the forums here. I am curious how everyone else builds because I want to know if I"m missing out on some crucial techniques--like using LDD to draw everythinng out in detail or organizing all your pieces by color or shape before building... but it sounds like people probably do what i do--minimal planning and lots of messing around. As for tearing down models, I think we are all limited to some extent by pieces and so we have to reuse them.

So, what are the rules on posting topics in GoH? I apparently just screwed up and didn't know. Are the forums for only MOCs and all other discussions go in here? I'm very confused.
-
Is this forum only for builds? If so, can one of the moderators please delete this? I thought we could put threads in here other than MOCs, but if not, my apologies. I would have asked this in the larger forums, but it's really the answers from the GoH folks that I am interested in.

I am curious how everyone builds and what you do with your models, so I thought I'd ask a few questions. 1. Do you write out directions, draw sketches, or plan your builds before you start, or just jump in and see what comes out? Maybe some combination? 2. Do you keep your builds together once you're done or take them apart? If you take them apart, how long do you let them stay together before you take them apart? As for myself: 1. I usually gather an idea together in my head, sometimes writing down the larger points, and then build. I have, however, actually sketched out entire footprints on graph paper before when I am working on a really large piece. 2. If I'm building for a contest, I'll tear the build apart as soon as I have pictures I'm happy with and the build is in. If it's something that I want for later stories, such as a vehicle or building, I tend to keep it together. If it's part of a larger theme, or a huge project I've been working on, I may leave the pieces in there for good. If it really is a MOC that I want to keep, I try to build it out of pieces that are not part of other sets that I would like to build again.
