  1. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was caught off guard with that. Had to make sure I didn't get a redirect. Yup, still Eurobricks.
  2. With Heartlake City hosting its first off-road stage rally Ford partnered with Friends to field a somewhat patronizing yet nevertheless eye-catching paint-schemed Fiesta for the notoriously colorful locale. Stacy "Sideways" Brickerson took home first place and celebrated with an obligatory motorsport champagne shower.
  3. A random combination of events that led to a perfect storm of renewed interest. Shaking off the cobwebs of the dark ages was cultivated by returning to a location that had real winters (snow, well below freezing temperatures, lots of time indoors, very boring), some extra holiday gift money and a random visit to Lego's website. Saw Town Hall, missed out on it but my interest in building again was nevertheless reignited by seeing Lego's new parts, new colors and what all the builders were doing with Lego. And all the new SNOT parts.
  4. The cat suit guy is kind of creepy, like 'lets keep an eye on that guy'-creepy. Whoever pointed out the difference between the open-faced mask and the cat suit style ski-mask in the other discussion was right, it must be that. The open face head covers are more friendly. Anyway elephant and flower pot are my favorites. Before the pictures came out I thought cactus would be the best.
  5. Decided to swing by a TRU today as there may not be another chance. Lots of sales, buy 1 get 1 40% off, straight 20% off and so on. Being a fan of Lego isn't synonymous with liking TRU but full closure is bad for Lego and thus bad for the fan. Will Lego survive, obviously, but its going to have an effect even if those ambivalent about the demise didn't shop there. "Toys 'R' Us could go out of business next week. That's bad news for Lego and Barbie" http://money.cnn.com/2018/03/09/investing/toys-r-us-closing-hasbro-mattel/index.html
  6. Yes I understand that if that percentage of overpricing carried throughout the product range then that would be substantial especially for the higher priced items, but that I had not personally seen the stated overpricing so I couldn't really speak to it however simply adding to the discussion of overpriced items and lack of sales that I had seen and purchased some Lego on sale from them for ~41% off. I'll take the word that they overpriced. I must have skipped over all above MSRP items without really taking mental note of the amount of pricing disparity. The news being discussed is from the past ~48 hours and indeed they are looking at full liquidation, all stores, possibly as early as next week.
  7. Well $0.50 on a set isn't a huge deal especially if its go to TRU or drive further, as many would have to in order to go to a Lego store or pay shipping but I get that if one was buying a lot of CMF that would add up quickly. I never personally saw those or any other set priced higher than MSRP so I can't speak to that but the last time I got CMF at TRU it was 3 for $5 (Ninjago movie minifigures) so TRU certainly did have sales.
  8. The grass is always greener and thus this is very desirable. But... what the heck is that purple blob thing in your picture with the Buckingham Palace set? Excellent photos and review as always, even if its showing something many of us can't have .
  9. Interesting. Picturing the equivalent of four to six modulars all in one set, ~128 to ~192 studs worth of city street. And numerous fans eating bread crumbs for several months after, a few admitted to hospital for malnutrition. Maybe a few ended relationships. Lower credit scores etc. Don't do it Lego.
  10. TRU priced the product the same as the competition; Walmart, Target, Amazon. Lego prices are fairly consistent across the board and one has to visit the various deal websites daily to catch an error or very brief sale on a specific set, wait for holidays or double VIP points etc. Lego is more expensive than counterfeits for several very basic reasons, or rather counterfeit products are cheaper than genuine products for several very basic reasons. Research and development. Product safety and testing. Market research. The counterfeit companies don't have to do these things nor many others that TLG does. They don't have to innovate, they don't do market research, they don't test their product, they don't have to abide by more strict product safety regulations (like the ones that ensure that the toys don't have hazardous and poisonous contents). They just steal. They even steal from builders on this site. What if someone stole from you and profited? On the one hand you have a consistent complaint about Lego being too expensive, saying they should have more distribution and retailers and not getting enough deals from TRU but its doubtful you'll like the resulting industry fallout with TRU, a large Lego retailer, completely out of business. Lego isn't in pain, they just haven't grown as much as they did prior. Most companies go through this.
  11. Besides direct from Lego there is TRU, Walmart, Target, Barnes and Noble, Amazon... they have a fairly healthy retail distribution. The exclusive sets help get customers in to TRU stores (or their website), its for the benefit of TRU because many regular Lego buyers want the VIP points and giveaways and will default to buying direct from Lego. If they're forced to get a set from TRU then that does exactly what you're advocating for, more vendors. If no one buys from the other vendors then those vendors have no incentive to carry the product. Exclusive sets are a great incentive. Google Toys R Us right now, they could be heading for liquidation in the US (and all stores) by next week. Should have bought more from TRU, there might be one fewer Lego retailer come Monday. Careful there. You're heading into dangerous waters.
  12. This should be interesting. The Garmadon Shark for example is like ~3x times larger in the movie just going off the size of the ship hull pieces used for the mouth build vs the retail set (not to mention a few questionable connections): From Lego.com Best of luck, the DVD would be the most helpful. @Xon67 is the Eurobricks expert on extrapolating builds from the Lego Movie, they might have some tips as they've accurately recreated huge scenes from mere snippets and single-image frames.
  13. Wonderful MOC!! Each vignette perfectly captures the progression of life as a Lego fan. Its very relatable and though I haven't reached the having kids stage myself its fun to see the Lego fan come full circle and share what was their childhood enjoyment with their kid. Well done and most excellent MOC.
  14. Mike's DD is amazing, one of the best so far but there's also Astrid (TH and PC) as well a number of other great designers at Lego who would probably do great things if given the opportunity to do one modular. Some fans have a sort of cult-like following that it has to be Jamie and that Jamie's designs are always the best and that '_____' would have been better if Jamie did it and so on. Just clicking on the designer video for the DD featuring Mike the very first comment is: "what happened to Jamie?". Yeah his work is awesome but seeing Astrid and Mike's work makes me want to see what other talented Lego designers can do with the modular theme. But after DD I would love to see another by Mike too.
  15. Page 3 of the linked thread details the discussion about what happened, it was stolen. As far as not sharing pictures I think that is less of a concern. Its the sharing of digital build files or selling of instructions that is risky (which is a shame as it stifles a wonderful aspect of Lego building and technology; sharing). While the toilet bug thieves could reverse engineer from pictures-alone they are lazy thieves and thus don't want to do that much work for large builds like modulars nor are they creative enough to interpret connections not shown which is why they're stealing ideas in the first place, so they go for instructions or in the case of the one being discussed the build file. Lego freely puts out all of the instructions for their sets, which I don't expect to change as its great for the customer, but it makes it so the liquid-feces-dwelling thieves don't even have to leave their moldy fungus filled thief factory nor buy the product and reverse engineer it (unless there's a new piece). They just sit in their biological hazards and plug in all the mediocre Pb and BPA laden poorly copied pieces the set requires and then sell.
  16. Both of those would be awesome. Maybe sea turtle with marine biologist, koala and conservationist , whooping crane and ornithologist. Could do a whole bunch focusing on vulnerable and threatened animals. But a farm motif would be great as well, the farmer and pig is one of my favorite CMFs.
  17. In my opinion Bright Purple, Light Purple and Bright Red Violet are all more on the red-side than purple while Medium Lavender, Lavender and Medium Lilac are all definitely purple. This might be because I'm a guy and guys 'supposedly have issues telling proper color', but still wouldn't mind seeing Sand Red again even if it meant adding another red. Or another Olive though I quite like the Olive-drab-like color that we have currently. Here's a Lego 'color checker chart' I've been slowly building up over the past year, by no means complete as I'm restricting the build to only 1x2 plates (so no doubling up 1x1s as substitute) and not strictly in the official order but more in rainbow form and where I prefer colors placed better (as Brick and Sand Yellows, Dark Orange, Olive are all better suited near the browns IMO). Each color progression goes from its lightest form to darkest and onto the next color.
  18. This currently available set has 2 of each of the little angled pieces Plate 1X2, W/ Bow, 45 Deg. Cut in red (left and right).
  19. What post did you read and which one did you actually intend to issue that response to because you've grossly and mistakenly confused and conflated a very simple joke about a particular media conglomerate's modus operandi with many other things not contained within the post you're quoting and responding. No where in that post is a statement about disliking Star Wars, or uninterrupted castle or space themes nor "complaining" to bring those themes back (in fact I've regularly poked fun at that repetitious opine as well; the constant 'bring back classic castle, classic space, classic pirates' attitude). Nowhere is it mentioned in that post that Lego Star Wars has been running too long (I basically said that they (the mouse and co.) will continue to milk it as long as it bleeds cash which you then said as much in response) however your mentioning that its been going on for ~20 years brings up an excellent point; a 20-year old Lego theme tied to a 41 year old franchise isn't exactly oozing with originality as per the thread title "lack of original themes". Yes a lot of Hollyweird does merchandising but none more perverse and prolific than Disney. And it was an unnecessary reiteration to say 'they will continue to do it as long as it sells' when the post that you're responding to contained numerous repetitious uses of various financial terms for "profit". Yes, obviously Mr Mouse will continue to do it as long as there are 'yields, its grossing, ever lucrative, much proceeds, still bankable' which is a barely subtle way to say 'they will continue to milk it until it's bled dry' or your "as long as kids like ___ then ___ will continue to sell". How are we debating and agreeing at the same time, its very weird, Hollyweird. If you've heard many jokes about it then perhaps there is some truth and substance to it, similar to how if this thread gets several times more responses and feedback than many other [better] threads then perhaps there is substance to the numerous agreeing opinions being remarked. Or maybe just take it as a joke and don't read too far into it. I bought some Lego Star Wars yesterday, though the purchase was for the pieces within and not the content pictured on the box.
  20. Really great work. You're skilled with those small holes and super tiny gauge wiring, if I tried to do that the drill bit would invariably come out the side of the lamp posts and the soldered connections would be twice as thick as the wire . Brilliant connection for the separation of the floors. Can't wait to see Parisian lit up.
  21. Thanks Peedeejay! Thanks! Making a better helicopter was a must as I'm not fond of the frequent use of open-cockpit designs and comically short rotor blades on the official small helicopters. Its a little cramped inside but I imagine it would be really fun to fly, like strapping on a helicopter as opposed to getting inside one. Thanks! I'd been wanting to do a heavy recovery tow vehicle since I missed out on Tow Truck 60056, instead of pay the outlandish second hand retired set prices just modify!
  22. Mr. Mouse, cut back? Star Wars fatigue? Star Wars Episode 43: the return of the second to last lucrative and maybe not final awakening sith empire profit of forced newer jedi merchandise rogue phantom proceeds clone rebellion yields strike back grossing updated bankable and remastered re-re-re-release. This is how film dies, with a thunderous applause.
  23. Agree Cloud and Snake would be two iconic Playstation-exclusive characters (though Snake started out on another platform and eventually went on to be multi-platform he was still one of the biggest impacts for PS). Cole from Infamous, Dante from Devil May Cry and Jill Valentine from Resident Evil would be a few other notable PS characters who all have unique appearances as well. Dualshock controller suit would be awesome or a nerd fan with the X, square, triangle and circle button logos. Your drawings are really sweet though, Crash Bandicoot is perfect.
  24. @MAB pointed this out in another thread that there was already a set like this? MAB's photo: Though BEAVeR's design (in the link above) is the most polished.
  25. There are many in the US who would instantly recognize this build, Uncle Sam's government issue. Amazing work on the whole thing, so realistic. Its intimidating even in Lego form.
