Jeep Crawler
AndyCW replied to Technic156's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What are the two gears in the transmission? The body looks a little short. Like it was put in a compactor and flattened. I'm sure the performance is good. When can we expect a video? v/r Andy -
[WIP] Rock Crawler
AndyCW replied to Technic156's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Looks much better. I don't care for the caster angle on the front, but that is hard to deal with. I look forward to a video of the performance. v/r Andy- 16 replies

Efferman's Custom Parts
AndyCW replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I purchased and have been testing the portal hubs along with the u-joints. I am running 2x unrestricted 5292 motors through them. So far so good. This rock bouncer I m building is pretty stout. About 5:1 gearing, 3 cell Lipo, after market tires, and less than 1.5 Kg. v/r Andy -
MOC Land Rover Discovery 3

Holy smokes!! This thing has detail. It's not just recognizable as a Landrover, it is a Landrover. v/r Andy -
[WIP] Rock Crawler

Looks good. It might be a little overbuilt, but you'll figure out the delicate balancing act between strength and weight. The link mounts look kind of questionable though. The angle of the links can lead to problems. The greater the angle, the more likely for them to pop off of the ball joints or the ball joints to click out of the liftarms. v/r Andy- 16 replies

The servo protruding out the bottom of the chassis concerns me. It sure looks like fun. v/r Andy -

Does this mean that you are starting university or are finishing? I'm not so sure how European post secondary education works. Either way congrats. v/r Andy -
The strength of the u-joints is relative to the angle that they operate under. In the above case, where the u-joint directly drives the wheel, poses some issues. Depending on the power level and the wheel size, the u-joints are in real danger of breakage. Nic Jasno made a live axle that uses portal hubs and incudes kingpin inclination. It does resolve some of the issues that have been mentioned. You can find the video by searching on Youtube for LPE Power Unimog. If reinforced and widened, they can withstand some power, but the inclusion of the cv joints is the weak point. v/r Andy

[MOC] PF Controlled Hot Rod
AndyCW replied to selfshot's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
These new tires are screaming for this kind of stuff. I might have worked on putting MT figures inside the car or at least posed them with it. Mine have been sitting in a plastic box since I was a kid. ~20 years or so. v/r Andy -
Tiger XL tank

I like the electric bass part of the video. You should do that in more of your presentations. Many of functions were coupled, controlled manually, or always on. v/r Andy -
[MOC] Tatra 813 Trial Truck
AndyCW replied to Madoca 1977's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Another awesome job. It seems like it has more than enough torque. Did you try any other gear ratios? 25:1 with XLs may be overkill. v/r Andy -
[WIP] Reliant Robin
AndyCW replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's good. It does seem to be more stable than the real thing though. Now you need a Jeremy Clarkson figurine to ride around in it and complain about the car. v/r Andy -
How to convert PF servo to PWM?
AndyCW replied to AndyCW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
After some more research, I may have found my issue. The ESC that I have is for an aircraft and is therefore unidirectional. My RC Lego creation would not have reverse. Taking this element out of the equation would mean that needed two brushed bidirectional speed controllers instead of just one. Those motor control boards from Pololu are beginning to look more enticing. v/r Andy -
How to convert PF servo to PWM?
AndyCW replied to AndyCW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
One of the obvious issues I ran into when researching this is that RC systems run on a three wire setup Power, Ground, and Signal. Whereas; the PF servo runs on a four wire setup Power, Ground, Control1, and Control2. Z3_2drive has a motor controller board that does this, but it also functions as the speed controller and costs a little too much. I need less functionality and a lower price. Does the PF servo operate at something other than the 1000 to 2000 pwm with 1500 being center position? v/r Andy -
I've got the following a 35Amp brushed speed controller w/ BEC a 2.4 gHz radio and receiver I want to connect the PF Servo into the 2.4 ghz receiver, but don't know how. Is this possible? I have been searching with Google and have read lots of peoples posts about making custom systems, but nothing on this specific topic has turned up. I know several members here have managed something similar. Any advice or references would be greatly appreciated. v/r Andy

[WIP] Reliant Robin
AndyCW replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Ha! It needs to roll over like the real thing. No training wheels allowed. v/r Andy -
In the trial trucks and crawlers I have built with 2 buggy motors, a gear ration between 5:1 and 15:1 should be sufficient depending on weight and tire size. Your "center section" has a 24:1 reduction and that is before you ever get to the reduction in the axles. Your creation will be painfully slow and inefficient due to the worm gears. As to your question, that assembly looks like it will be fine with regards to gears popping. v/r Andy
