[WIP] HEMTT
AndyCW replied to JMChristopher's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I drove one of those when I was in the Army. It was harder than I thought. Good thing I just needed to drive it across the motor pool. (parking lot) v/r Andy -
Crowkiller's Muscle Car
AndyCW replied to Kronos's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It reminds me of a Mustang. There are not many other muscle car or pony cars that came in red with write stripes. v/r Andy -
Lego Technic Ultimate Wheel Hub
AndyCW replied to nicjasno's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
We all know Lego won't make this, but if you do, I would buy a set. It also looks like I should get myself some Bionicle ball joints and try again with my IRS crawler. v/r Andy -
It is nice to see some old school building styles on here every now and then. v/r Andy

Cool. I'm looking forward to the video. Mine will definitely be uglier. v/r Andy -
Snowmobile MK II
AndyCW replied to piterx's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
After seeing your post about the upcoming project, I have been working on my own snowmobile. I have snow here and have tested. I think you may have a problem with the front skis. They look tip heavy and not wide enough. This means that they will dig in very easily, if the snow is soft. Of course, your weight bias on the track may make this observation moot. Good luck. On another related note, has anyone tried to order the red rubber cleats directly from lego? The prices on bricklink are scary. My snowmobile (sled) is awaiting a bricklink order for rev 2. v/r Andy -
Willys Rat Rod
AndyCW replied to HorcikDesigns's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I am reminded of this video I saw a couple of months ago. It is a rat rod Jeep called Death Wish. Check it out. -
Yeah this is pretty much what you talked about. I sometimes have problems with the hockey spring re-centering the pole reverser properly. Other than that, 5:1 gearing is adequate to drive PP tires. It will lift a tire accelerating with Unimog tires. Getting the 12t half bevel to not pop with a 20t db was a challenge. It needed a double shear pinion support and 2 studs worth of pinion snout bearing. v/r Andy

I am currently using a 9.6vdc custom battery pack with a relay to bypass current limitations on the receiver. The relay is made from a pole reverser switch, a PF med, and a hockey spring. It results in about 2.5 times more torque than through the receiver. It completely changes needed gear ratios and structure strength requirements. It is like stepping up to buggy motors all over again.

I can operate a single 5292 and a servo from a single v2 IR rx and powered by a single LiPo. Try doing it without any load on either the servo or motor. It is true that when I activate the servo, I can hear the 5292 motor "draw down", but no to the extent that you are talking about. It even worked with a v1 IR rx, just not very well. What you are describing seems like abnormal behavior and an indication of a problem. v/r Andy

What year corvette? My father in-law has two and I have been to the National Corvette museum. v/r Andy -
[MOC] Rage Buggy
AndyCW replied to JM1971's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The track width looks odd. Would the track width be more to scale with these tires? 81.6 X 38 balloon v/r Andy -
HMMWV use inboard brakes with portal axles on an independent suspension. Works great. The skill evident in the built so far is promising. The design so far though... leaves a little to be desired. I am hopeful that we will see another revision and a complete built. Anxiously awaiting the next update on this project. v/r Andy

Land Cruiser 80 Crawler (WIP)
AndyCW replied to VKTechnic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This looks promising. I hope you enjoy the build. I worry about the 12t bevel to 20t double bevel in the center section. I have seen the pinion gear climb the ring gear and cause gear deflection and then the 12t bevel gear ground its teeth off. However; with only one PF Large for power there should not be any problems. After seeing some of your other work, I am eager to see the results of this project. v/r Andy -
[WIP] RC (not IR) Racecar
AndyCW replied to z3_2drive's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You have to use 8880 wheels, but numerous tires fit on them. His u-joints are failing. The center piece "pops" out of either end. They are staying put because there is slack in them and they can compensate for little differences. v/r Andy- 63 replies

Trophy Truck Project
AndyCW replied to MrNumbskull13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The standard wishbone control arm suspension may be more in tune with what you need. The level of power applied will determine to a great extent how strong you need everything to be. The more power, the harder the crashes will be, the stronger you need stuff to be to prevent breakage. A real full scale trophy truck breaks when they crash into immoveable objects, why would a model be any different. v/r Andy -
Land Cruiser 80 Crawler (WIP)
AndyCW replied to VKTechnic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The newer wheel hubs might be a solution to your strength issue. They also move the steering pivot further inside the wheel and will reduce the forces on the steering rack. The question is whether or not they are stronger than the u-joint style hub. Testing is how we all learn about the limits of these parts. I am eagerly awaiting the results of this. It also looks like you are using the old 8t gears on the axle. Scaling up crawlers creates many issues. Good luck. v/r Andy -
[WIP] RC (not IR) Racecar
AndyCW replied to z3_2drive's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The 8880 hubs might be stronger and eliminate the need for one of the u-joints. This may free up enough room for the HD u-joint. These hubs might also eliminate the wheel wobble that you mention. You can also use them to get ackerman geometry, caster, camber curve, and other geometries. Reducing the diameter of the wheels will also relieve some of the stress on the u-joints. v/r Andy- 63 replies

24:1 WOW I am not sure that you will be happy with this setup. Excessive torque and exceptionally slow.
